Glass half empty in MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

Since I am a "glass half empty" kind of guy, I thought that I would bring a bit of balance to the Force on this forum by listing some of the (relatively minor) niggles that still bug me in MSFS 2020...

  • missing sections of procedural grass at airports
  • visible horizon line through mountains at low sun elevations
  • land bars across lakes and coastal areas (river mouths/harbours etc)
  • thin black lines in water (to be fair, I have only seen this once in the twelve months that I have used MSFS 2020, but it surprised and annoyed me)
  • low resolution vector data in Greenland, including misalignment of vector data with lake boundaries)
  • black lakes in northerly latitudes (no OSM data for certain bodies of water; examples can be seen near EFIV Ivalo in Finland, and ESNQ Kiruna in Sweden)
  • bleed through of generic terrain textures in extensive ice covered areas of Iceland
  • DEM issues with some small islands and cliffs (high resolution data fails to load until the user is almost on top of them)
  • poor autogen rendition of circular oil tanks

The following are issues with specific airports, or missing features that I think should have been included...

  • no solar panels in the fields next to the runway 08 threshold @ UK2000 EGHH Bournemouth
  • misaligned runway centreline markings @ IniBuilds EGHI Southampton (I have been informed that this is being addressed, so hopefully this will be sorted very soon)
  • two land bars across Southampton Water directly underneath the runway 02 approach @ IniBuilds EGHI Southampton
  • generic aircraft models used at Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre @ UK2000 EGHQ Newquay
  • no solar panels @ UK2000 EGHQ Newquay
  • poor parallax textures @ er.....some airports
  • generic aircraft models used at Solway Aviation Museum @ UK2000 EGNC Carlisle
  • ORBx removed the 3D model of the Granton Gas Holder in ORBx Great Britain North (because the PG one was preferred; that does not help non PG users)
  • visible line between mismatched BING aerial images that runs between EGSU Duxford and EGSS London Stansted in England
  • small messed up section of Bing aerial images west of EGSU Duxford
  • blurred BING aerial textures south west of LFRB Brest Bretagne airport (apparently a French naval dockyard; there are other areas, but this one annoys me because of its relative proximity to one of my payware airports)
  • misaligned runway centreline markings @ Pilot Experience LFRB Brest Bretagne
  • misaligned runway centreline markings @ MK Studios EIDW Dublin v2 (a fix is apparently in the works, but no sign of it yet)
  • DEM issues short of both runway thresholds @ 29 Palms LGMK Mykonos (a fix is apparently due shortly)
  • DEM issues @ ORBx ESMS Malmo (recently reported and confirmed by the developer)

This final one is more a wish for an update than anything else....

  • no terminal interior modelling @ Asobo EIDL Donegal

As you can see, my glass is definitely half empty  I just wanted to provide examples of how easily something can bug me in a flight simulator. These are issues that many of you will probably think are so minor that they are not worth worrying about. The problem is that I do worry about them. They make me feel uncomfortable, and dent my enthusiasm whenever I encounter them.

Contact details for good psychiatrists are more than welcome

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Of course they are not worthy of anybody's worry.  Probably all of those you mention will be fixed by the relevant developer.

Oh, as far as Christmas goes - HUMBUG!

I forgot to mention the ridiculous number of trees. As an example, I was on final approach to runway 12 at EGPK Prestwick last night. This took me right over the top of Royal Troon golf course (one of the famous collection of courses that hosts the British Open). Now, this is a links course in the real world, with hardly a tree in sight. Unfortunately, the MSFS 2020 version (and I am guessing that it will be no different in MSFS 2024) looks more like a parkland course, with a significant number of trees lining many of the fairways.

Not a disaster by any means (and certainly nowhere near as much of an issue as those annoying land bars), but still something that needs to be sorted out.

Picky picky picky!

The 1.2.7.0 patch only listed about 600 fixes. Not even a thousand! Hardly worth even making a patch...

I would be interested to know how many of the issues in the first section of my list have been resolved in MSFS 2024. I have been informed by an MSFS 2024 user that the land bars are still there

Regatdung MSFS 2020 :

No blurry terrein issues as I am using the Map Enhancement Mod in HD.

No weird aurports as I am only flying from/to addon airports.

A great looking atmosphere as I am using Atmos.

No CTD’s , never.

I do not use the Map Enhancement Mod, and I do not suffer from blurry ground textures in MSFS 2020. I also only use addon airports, and the developers of those payware ones that I mentioned have all been informed about the issues. Unfortunately, a handful of those are not likely to be rectified, as they are more personal desires than technical problems.

The map enhancement mod is awesome, amongst other stuff  it got rid of those ridiculous, almost luminous, cartoon green fields which infested the UK in my setup

Christopher, I am so glad that you are up to date and "with it" with modern woke jargon.  "Uncomfortable"? Try sitting on a softer cushion.

Trees! The Bain of MSFS. I was hoping for some sort of algorithm improvement where as a general rule of thumb no trees would be placed within say, a mile of any airport anywhere.

I’ve always found it slightly ludicrous that on approach or just before the threshold; yep, trees!🙃
