Small hobby lith batteries in the home are normally put out by smothering them, for instance covering with sand. I don't know how to put out a giant warehouse full.

 

Toxic fumes can be life threating.

They showed this on the news last night.  They said it was the Moss Landing Power plant that was burning.
I knew it was something near it!

Lithium batteries are dangerous.  There are many examples of them exploding or catching fire.  Hopefully better batteries can be developed.

To be fair, gasoline is dangerous, too.  We've all seen refinery fires, not to mention oil spills.

I don't think there is an energy source, apart from hydro, that is really safe.  Even solar and wind must use batteries to store the electricity.

LFP, Dave. Quite a few car models have them now, including Tesla. Do you remember the "Blade" battery video I posted. LFP is used for grid scale batteries now, as well.

Solid state are pretty much here, too, that have a solid non flammable electrolyte. Honda have a demonstration solid state battery production line in action. I recall that a Chinese company does too. 

And solid state sodium Ion of course.

In terms of car fires hybrid catch fire the most, followed by petrol cars and BEV's last. Per capita.

25 per 100,000 for BEV. 1,500 for petrol and diesal. 3,475 for hybrids.

But yes, LFP and solid state reduce the risk further.

That's a good point.  If a dam fails it can be catastrophic. 

Fortunately, major dam failures in the US that resulted in loss of life or catastrophic damage have been quite rare.

I think you'd be surprised that we're actually not that far apart on a number of issues that we're not allowed to talk about any more.  It's really just a matter of degree, not so much the substance. 

Good, robust debate is good for everybody as it can be informative and enlightening.  None of us knows everything, although some people think they do.😉

BTW, I'm not so sure I'd win what you proposed.

It would be great to have a pub night with members on here, rapport is a different thing face to face, on here it is tunnel vision interaction. I did have a beer with one member from AVSIM in Wellington 6 years ago, and I have always said if anyone on AVSIM ends up traveling through Wellington I will by the beers, that offer still stands.
