January 30, 20251 yr Too early to speculate but why was a Helicopter in the approach area in the first place??? Not good Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Not good There is a military helo base on the opposite side of the Potomac from DCA that is used as a refueling post for military helicopters. It is also used to ferry military hierarchy including the military-related cabinet members and chiefs of staff. As it is too early to understand what happened, I wonder why the RJ or the BH didn't see each other on TCAS; apparently, there was no proper traffic advisory, and there are way too many issues here. May God bless their souls. 747 Captain for the last 39 years, and still learning.

The TCAS very likely on the CRJ will not provide a TA/RA below 1000' (not sure if that is the actual altitude for the CRJ) KROSWYND a.k.a KILO_WHISKEYMajestic Software Development/Support Sys 1: AMD 7950X3D, NOCTUA D15S, Gigabyte Elite B650, MSI 4090, 64Gb Ram, Corsair 850 Power Supply, 2x2TB M.2 Samsung 980s, 1x4TB WDD M.2, 6xNoctua 120mm case fans, LG C2 55" OLED running at 120Hz for the monitor, Win11. January 30, 20251 yr This looks dire. I hope there are survivors. Good vibes to the passengers and crews as well as their families. 16 years was a good stretch without major commercial jet accidents.
January 30, 20251 yr @crosswind, the difference is that RA is not provided below 1,000 FT, while TA is available starting from the ground and up (also on RJ.) In special situations, you can switch only to TA. 747 Captain for the last 39 years, and still learning.

January 30, 20251 yr Sounds like the plane was asked to change runways for landing, and the helicopter was supposed to maintain visual contact and pass behind the plane. Quote A few minutes before landing, air traffic controllers asked the arriving commercial jet if it could land on the shorter Runway 33 at Reagan National and the pilots said they were able. Controllers then cleared the plane to land on Runway 33. Flight tracking sites showed the plane adjust its approach to the new runway. Less than 30 seconds before the crash, an air traffic controller asked the helicopter if it had the arriving plane in sight. The controller made another radio call to the helicopter moments later: “PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ.” Seconds after that, the two aircraft collided. https://apnews.com/article/ronald-reagan-national-airport-crash-cebb142d24859ba0c4e0e4fd6c33773f
