Graphics Card Scam Alert! (Public service message)

Featured Replies

A public service message, just in case

Earlier, in another thread, I mentioned that the only place that seemed to have the new 50-series graphics cards was Ebay.

Later in the day, a vague memory resurfaced from the days of the 40-series debacle, and I did some quick searching.

Did not take me long at all to find multiple examples of what I was looking for:

Suspicious things about the offer below:

  • Price too low. Scalpers are asking up to 7K for these cards
  • Seller explicitly does not accept returns.
  • Unobtrusive admonition to read the card description

The card description: Read the disclaimer!!

$2000 for a picture. I no judge of modern art, not sure it's worth that much.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Well, it should be pretty easy to report this scammer to EBAY.

He will try to weasel his way out of any wrongdoing by claiming that he stated in the description that the buyer will not receive the product but a picture of it.

It is still fraud IMO.

If it’s art, it’s literally a steal; Art of the Deal-wise 🤣

Well, all I can say is that at that price the picture better darn well be in full colour!  🤑

People who choose to pay via PayPal Credit will only loose at most $149 (1st monthly payment) ...

People who fall for this may have no recourse.  The seller specifically states that the buyer will not receive a video card, but a picture of a video card.  I think that disclaimer would stand up in a court of law, the purchaser has a duty to read and understand disclaimers.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

People are putting these up not to defraud anyone but to take on the scalpers who use bots to hoover up supplies of these cards and then re-sell at a vast profit.

The bot will scan the product header and the price and if it falls into the 'buy' parameter it will purchase the item. The bot can do this quicker than a human. What the bot can't do is take in the description.

That is why the 'seller' has put READ THE DESCRIPTION in big, obvious letters.

Good luck to 'em....

TBH, i will not buy anything from ebay at that price range.

When I was in high school, i am talking about more than 20 years ago, I paid for a video card for about a few hundreds USD and I never got the card i paid for.  Back then I don't know what to do for a resolution....so unless the seller has a lot of ratings....even still I wouldn't bother with it nowadays...

I will just wait until the retail stores and order it online.

Besides, I don't like being ripped off by scalpers!

For me any PC part costing three hundred and up being sold by an individual and not from a normal retailer = In person transaction and in some cases testing for verification involved.

That's interesting to know. I thought it was to cheat people. Apparently not, then.
