Are things looking up weather radar wise?

If MSFS paid attention to (their customers) and the atmosphere as much as their ground scenery and physics, there would be no competition. But I've been watching X-plane 12 and just loaded in the new beta - have not really tried it yet. But they are definitely improving things a lot, and they are listening to their customer base. Weather is improving a lot, and the night lighting especially airports (where it counts most!) is really, really good IMO.

I have a prediction to make - haha: I predict that weather and atmosphere will be something Asobo wishes one day they would have focused on more... X-Plane is going after their weak spot, and I think they are on to something! This is all in fun omg don't start this sim is better than other etc. I really enjoy MSFS series and poke in on x-plane once in a great while. But I have been taking second looks lately on x-plane 12, and it's garnering some of my flight time versus MSFS as of late!

But MSFS has plausible 3rd party ATC options that control traffic

I have kind of moved over from P3D like maybe a year ago, to slowly discover the sad state of MSFS. Now before everyone jumps on me saying how wrong I am, let me explain. The sim is unfortunately

Interesting responses, gents.  Thank-you.

It does annoy me a bit that a lot of graphics/fancy stuff gets a lot of Asobo effort versus some stuff core to flying.

I would have thought after five years now there wouldn't need to be much a "backward step" if you move over from P3D.  I'll have to come one day but guess I'll hold on for a bit longer.  Once there's a plane I really want to fly that I don;t have in P3D I'll make the move.  I am a bit of a nerd and enjoy doing some detailed flight planning with PFPX etc. and like to follow airline SOP as much as possible, so little things like WXR being inop annoy me quite a bit!

Thanks for all the posts.

A cheeky sidenote - I'll probably need to make a new post - is the default A330 (inibuilds) in 2024 much good?  Would I be frustrated using it if I am used to the FSLA320 or PMDG 777 for example?

PS - hopefully Fenix's implementation of the WXR spurs other devs to have a red hot go

Just to let you know… Fenix is just using the default WXR that’s used by numerous devs already, it’s right there in the blog post

The default/core WXR system and framework from 2020 models a fixed and pointing-straight-ahead 3D cone radar, and now adds tilt in 2024 (perhaps only in some aircraft? need to go and check).. so given that, can those in the know list the major pieces of functionality that are still missing in default WXR if any?  Dangerous weather/clouds not having actual impact on the aircraft is a different sim issue altogether outside of WXR (but that's debatable too, since with turbulence set to realistic I get action most times when flying thru weather/clouds that should/would cause turbulence).

Wa? WXR works fine.

First thing I could think of is ground obstruction and reflection? If there's a mountain between you and the cloud the cloud should not be visible on the radar. I'll have to check if MSFS simulates this at all.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Thought there were quite a few payware aircraft without it?  Could be mistaken though.  Or more than just inop, if its not much use as I see in A330Driver's streams for example - showing lots of precip at low altitude with a 6 degree tilt up at FL330.

Interesantes respuestas, caballeros. Gracias.

Ini a330 is free but currently the only high level a330 is Toliss for xplane. Others will tell you otherwise but Inibuilds, even with their paid addons, is far behind other developers like FSLabs, Toliss or Fenix.

It is very good for a free default aircraft. Of course it's not at the Fenix/PMDG/FSL level of fidelity so in that sense you'd be frustrated 🙂, but overall medium fidelity I'd say, and unprecedented fidelity for default aircraft.

Have a look at A330 Driver's (IRL A330 pilot) various videos and tutorials on it:

In fact it always looks like it’s doomsday arriving in MSFS. Unless one uses Active Sky with limited interaction it could somehow implement

Are you referring to 2020?  If not I don't agree with you at all.  2024 weather is vastly improved.  Look at these three screen grabs of me approaching a heavy shower over London UK with live weather

I can't remember now,  I think it was inbuild A300

So you claim that tilt works, but can't even say in which aircraft?

I can tell you in which one it doesn't: Inibuilds A330 and A350.

Yes it worked for me. And yes I can't remember which aircraft I used. I think it was 300 because it used to fly it a lot in 2024.

Asobo has no idea what a weather radar is or how it works, so no, things are not looking up.

I have some GA with working weather radar that works well in 2024.
