What are some cool islands you have discovered?

Featured Replies

I’ve just started touring the Pacific and flew from Honolulu to Kiritimati island in the iFly 737… to PLCH… Cassidy International Airport.

I highly recommend Kiritimati island - it’s worth a visit. It has some very unique geography that’s beautiful from the air. Once I arrived, I explored it using the H145. There’s a freeware PLCH on flightsim.to to enhance the visit.

I had never heard of this island before, and just stumbled across it searching to break up a flight from Hawaii to Tahiti.

Anyway, it makes me wonder what other relatively unknown islands might be out there that are worthy of a visit? Any recommendations?

Minami Torishima -- tiny TINY little island, in FS98 had a marooned stick-figure guy on it/Easter Egg

Thira/Santorini -- not that remote, but cool -- was once a volcano that collapsed

Wrangel Island -- last refuge of the Woolly Mammoth around the time of the Egyptian pyramids, tundra and bleak terrain feels like the Ice Age even in summer

Arrecife Alecranes -- group of islets, Mexico has a weather station there, otherwise they're tiny and interesting spots

I remember doing some deep exploration of the Flight Sim Jewels French Polynesia Society Islands scenery back in the FSX days.

I remember sailing a boat from the Port Motu Mute and just hugging the coastlines of the smaller islands and discovering Moorea and Mehetia.

Seeing litte village huts and buildings pop up on both sides as I sailed through some of the narrow channels.

Shout out to the Flight Sim Jewels developers  where ever you all may be today. I feel in love with the exploration of the French Polynesia Society Islands because of you all.

Those colorful detailed sceneries were before their time!

I always like flying in to Nusatupe airport (AGGN) in the Solomon Islands. The airport takes up the whole island and you need to take a boat to the nearest town, Gizo.

In 2023 it was voted best airstrip in the South Pacific by the Coral Sea Foundation.

May all your landings be safe ones!

Canton ( or Kanton ) Island (PCIS) in the Pacific, with a 7600 foot runway. It's a more southern alternative for refuelling between Australasia and Hawaii. British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines used to stop off there with their DC-6s

Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting.

How about Fernando De Noronha off of the east coast of Brazil? (Airport: SBFN):

This detailed airport was included as a part of the last 2020 World Update which included Brazil and other countries of South America.

Was always fascinated by this place and bought the Tropical Sim scenery back in the FSX days.

The airport has a pretty shaky past with crash incidents and poor runway maintenance leading to passenger jet engine aircraft being prohibited.

Try to spawn in Keeling Island (Cocos). It's near Christmas Island. A hidden gem of the Pacific.

I just came across another fascinating island I need to visit. But it doesn’t have an airport for… reasons…

North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, an Indian archipelago in the Bay of Bengal which also includes South Sentinel Island.[8] The island is a protected area of India. It is home to the Sentinelese, an indigenous tribe in voluntary isolation who have defended, often by force, their protected isolation from the outside world.

Inter-island in the Hawaiian Islands themselves are rather nice.

Several major international airports within less than 150 mi of each other, even the IRL jet airliners cruise at under fl150.

Iceland

Falklands

all the GA treasures between Tacoma and the Aleutians.

Okinawa.

my two all time favorites are North and South, NZ 😉
