"Melting" scenery in MSFS2024.

Featured Replies

yeah I'm no so sure on the "patience" side of things, melted buildings have been an issue for 5 years already. It's annoying because it's one of those areas whereby when it doesn't happen it looks fantastic, when it does happen it looks like a dogs breakfast, there's no middle ground.

  • From my on and off install then testing with FS2024, what you experienced is the norm. A few days the game will look perfect but most days there are noticeable graphical issues. All the time care

Streaming is the way to go, I guess...

I haven't had any problems with that in FS 2024, although I do not have PG enabled because I prefer to save CPU / GPU / Net for other stuff since my resources aren't great...

FS 2024 is th esmoothest ride I have ever experienced in desktop flight simulation, specially for the level of graphical details it offers, even at mid settings!

Having even more users in the MSFS ecosystem is certainly feed the developers, and MS / ASOBO, which is what we and they need after all to keep it growing and shining !!!

That's certainly my feeling. Obviously I can't "prove" anything, but that's definitely the vibe for me. PG is like a lot of other aspects in 2024, hugely improved in some ways, massively worse in others. To my eyes, anyway.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case. Sims in use - 2020, 2024, XP-12 and -11, FSX/SE, P3Dv4.5 and v5.4. DCS and AFS2 installed but rarely used

I think it is a matter of patience, eventually all these issues will be addressed with server updates. Patience is a virtue!

How long? 5 years (already achieved), 7 years, ten years?

I haven't seen that but turning two story houses, in subdivisions. to multistory buildings is a turnoff.  I guess they need zoning codes in their algorithm,

Poor building "footprint" matching would be another reason for me to worry about updating to MSFS 2024

I wouldn't say it was "poor" just perhaps not as precise as I seem to remember. Which could also be an artifact of me being gob smacked at MSFS2020 and a bit more jaded and picky by the release of 2024....

Most of their building info comes from open Street Map

We know this from

A. Looking at the autogen config fines, they mention OSM and OSM tags

B. That super tall building in Melbourne when 2020 released was traced back to an old edit on OSM with a typo on the number of floors section.

If a building doesn’t have a defined height, I’m guessing MSFS just uses whatever default values are in the autogen files for that region and building type

The building footprint is the same between both sims. At least it is in my home town.

blackshark never removed tree blobs in photogrammetry.

Photogrammetry implementation has always been on Microsoft’s side.

Blackshark was only working on autogen buildings and models.

And I’m pretty sure Blackshark and Microsoft stopped working together around 2021, as there have been no new autogen building designs or any mention of Blackshark since I believe world update 6

Frowns. My vague memory was of Asobo mentioning finding building heights from shadows, footprints from satellite data and something about mapping out a zillion trees, and.... I think it was during the Blackshark partnership rollout. But then, its been a while.

Autogen buildings and trees yes, but not photogrammetry

Probably for areas that lack OSM data

must be a mix of sources, because my house is not on OSM, but it’s the correct shape (though not height) in the sim and on Bing maps.
Yet you can’t see the shape of the building from satellite imagery the trees obscure it.

This has been the experience in both sims for a while now. Still fly in 2020 sometimes and see it. 2024 as well.

it really depends on the quality of the photogrammetry, your internet speed and the MSFS servers behaving.

Like the new Tokyo photogrammetry looks amazing.
