Are there plans to implement 'in-cloud' physics effects?

Featured Replies

More so than visual appearance of clouds and weather between 2024 and XP12.x which IMO are essentially in the same ballpark secondary to the limitations of current voxel-based rendering I'm more interested in weather and cloud and terrain related physics effects on flight behaviors.  I read XP12.x is much farther along in this domain and wonder if we will see these effects implemented in 2024.  What do we know about this potential currently?

I’d love to see more cloud entry influence on flight physics … in the real world, cloud entry (significant layer(s)) almost always triggers some level of turbulence.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. - Carl Sagan

Cumulus clouds in particular are prety bumpy and if you get into a cumulonimbus, then you are really for it - unless you fly msfs2020 or 24 of course.

My favouite clouds in the days when I used to fly gliders were lenticular clouds - plenty of lift and very smooth too.

But even layer cloud has the potential for lumps and bumps, especially on entering and leaving them.

Yeah, there’s a bug report / wishlist item for it on the official forum. It has been marked as ‘bug logged’ so that should mean it’ll be done eventually.

Obviously there are several weather / cloud related wants, and now that the performance optimizations seem to be nearly done, I’m hoping they’ll get to work on them soon.

For the time being, head on over and vote on the topic!

I know many here don't want this from an add-on, and would rather it be included in MSFS directly, but this does exist in ASFS, using ASFS controlled weather or MSFS live/historical weather (passive mode). There hasn't been much talk or feedback about it. If there had been, this would likely have been prioritized and extended much further in ASFS - and if it gained enough traction I'm sure MS/Asobo would put it in internally, like many other popular add-on-introduced features over the years.

In any case, feedback regarding ASFS cloud turbulence and other in-cloud effects is highly welcome. Show of interest would definitely help the progression here.

It's a shame that ASFS features, such as Historical Weather, are not used by various developers (PMDG, Fenix, iFly?, etc.). It's one of the things I miss the most...

It's something that a few of us have been asking Asobo for a long time, and at the moment it seems that weather physics are not a priority for them. Hopefully this will change in the future.

I heard Sebastian mentioning some "love" for soaring, including weather details, for upcoming updates.

Although Condorsoaring is still in another league regarding desktop flight simulation of soaring flight, FS 2024 turned into my go-to soaring sim because of the true to real scenery of teh areas I fly over IRL, and even because of their, even if limited, implementation of convection effects even without cumulus clouds being present (the "blue" days...).

I believe they will bring better weather effects, but I also whish for a long time since MSFS 2020 was released they had chosen to open their SDK to those who have lomng been making weather a lot more realistic for simmers, like the reference for me since decades - HiFi Simulations.

oh ! very interinsting !

It's indeed a big lack in MSFS. IRL when you fly through a cloud (that is vorbidden in VFR lol, but sometimes you can't avoid touch the base of a cloud) your plane is shaked. And if, in summer, you fly under a cumulus, the plane is "pumped"  and in MSFS that is too flat sadly

I did'nt notice that in ASFS ! I will try again. Is there some options in ASFS to enhance this feature ?

Wishing the exact same... hopefully SU4 is the point where they catch up on fixing all the major issues that plagued the sim at release, and now SU5 onwards they can start to address the wishlist as well as new features/goodies/etc. Per the last Q&A at least Seb alluded to weather related wishlist items and fixes in future SUs, although I'd really like a weather focused SU or two. I doubt some of the "surprises" marked on the 2025+ roadmap are weather-related, but looking forward to what's to come nonetheless.

The sim's weather engine itself as it stands is certainly capable of stellar visual depiction, and also proper turbulence in clouds etc when doing manual weather, IMO. They just need to fix up the live weather depiction as a good starting point I feel (something which annoyingly regressed ever since the intro of METAR blending in MSFS 2020 SU7 😅).

There's a setting for cloud turbulence in AS. Realturb also does cloud turbulence.

I use both and tune the settings so they don't overcook it when working together. The result is quite convincing in my opinion. Well, at any rate its far more convincing than what MSFS [doesn't] do...
