Fraps loose contact with P3D v2.3
Fraps worked fine for me in P3Dv2 up to v2.3, but since then it's been erratic at best. I don't do a lot of video captures, but I do grab a lot of screenshots. Being unable to capture screenshots after accessing the menu or resizing the window is a real disappointment to me. I know the v key still works, but I really don't like messing with bmp files. As an aside, you can display p3d in full screen, just tick the "blackout" option in video settings, and p3d will occupy the entire main display, but any additional monitors not part of the primary display will go black. I generally start p3d in a window, load my scenario and other ancillary apps (Opus) then maximize the window. At this point it's still in windowed mode, but the keyboard shortcut RightAlt+Enter will maximize the sim. For what it's worth, the menu dropping Fraps into an inactive state is not a Fraps issue. I installed Bandicam to see if that worked any better. Same exact issue as with Fraps, screen captures are black and video captures are black but with full sound. Looks like this is some issue with how p3d handles the menu graphics. Or it could be a video driver issue. I'm running the very latest Nvidia drivers (bug fix whql version 344.80 I think, not at my desktop to confirm.)

Majestic dash 8 Q400 for P3D ?
Somehow I had missed the hint about turning off the cockpit mipmaps... Now that I've done that, all the cockpit MFD's operate as they should, yay! Now I can get to actually flying this aircraft.

Aerosoft Twin Otter Extended Released!
I reported that "ifly" post/site to admin as spam. That's just creepy how he copied AvSim's layout, then has the 'nads' to post link spam in a popular thread on the very site he's copying. Bottom feeder. ~~~ Looking forward to doing some fun back-country flying with the Twin Otter Extended. I've spent a fair amount of time with the original "X" version, and enjoyed the time spent flying that model. With all new graphics and and modeling, this new rendition fits my needs very well. I think it would be a nice gesture if Aerosoft did add RXP integration to the Twin Otter Extended, but I'm not bothered in the least by their decision not to include RXP. I've come close to buying RXP products myself, but I'm not real keen about tossing my money into someone's pocket who won't even acknowledge I exist. I expect the same is true for Aerosoft... If RXP had answered the phone or read their emails, things might be different. I'm guessing there's a strong business opportunity for someone who would like to pick up where RXP left off...

Orbx FTX Related Releases
Well, thanks for the diligence in keeping AvSim operating despite the attacks Stephen. I do, however, get an idea of what it feels like to be 'collateral damage' in a battle of leviathans.

Orbx FTX Related Releases
... you know what, I give up trying to post anything other than plain text here. Scotland is out, Wales and England have new patches. Go to the Orbx web site for download info.

Can OpusFSX please get the route from the loaded FSX Plan?
Thanks Stephen, that would be very useful.

Albeo Staggerwing
I've been waiting for this one. Disappointed in the lack of documentation though. Still, I've always wanted a Staggerwing in my hangar. Will be buying it soon. Sent from my Android powered phone via TapaTalk

Is 240GB enough for FSX?
Molew replied to uhntissbaby111's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcI run FSX off a 128gb SSD (16gb remaining free) , and have most of my aircraft and rotor-craft on a separate HDD, and my add-on scenery (except Orbx) on a third HDD. Total storage space used is just shy of 200gb, not counting additional third-party stuff like REX (16gb more), or the various "user" folders containing all the operational stuff. So to answer the O/P's question: 240gb is the barest minimum I'd reserve for FSX use. Triple that value for future (worry-free) expansion.

Best Bush Aircraft
One I'd like to add to the list is Lion Heart Creations' Piper Pacer. One of the versions included in the package is equipped with tundra tires, and makes an excellent bush plane. I know it's not necessarily considered a bush plane, but Aerosoft's Twin Otter is also one heck of a good short-field aircraft. I've managed to get the Tw'Otter down onto, and back out of, Mile Hi (I97D). Something that I doubt could be done in real life, but was sure fun to try in the sim. (you'll need Orbx Central Rocky Mountains scenery, not sure if it's listed in stock FSX.)

FSUIPC TO STOP WORKING TODAY!
Also, SimMarket is sending out emails with the update info and DropBox download links to the 4.90 and 3.999z2 packages. This update will get into the hands of all registered FSUIPC users quite quickly. Just to be clear: FSUIPC isn't infecting anyone's machine. Apparently some third party (hacker) has stolen the GlobalSign Code Keys identifying FSUIPC as safe software and is using those keys on other, non-safe software advertising itself as Java updates. To ensure your own machine is clean and safe, use your standard anti-virus and/or anti-malware program and scan regularly with updated definition files.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
I certainly could, but that doesn't address the linked-image size issue brought up by the moderator. I really don't want to compress the raw .PNG format screenshots, especially for this one forum when I post these on several. Off to work now... Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
I prefer not to compress the original images in order to maintain their fidelity. If that's an issue with AvSim I'll simply stop posting them and de-link the existing images so that only the thumbnails remain. Kind of defeats the purpose of a screenshot area though.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
(discovered the "BBCode mode" button, that makes things much easier!) ~~~ Here's a selection of images from today's flight. In Wales today, with real weather (via OpusFSX) all the way through. A pleasant flight in Dave Garwood's free-ware Auster Autocrat (available here: http://www.cbfsim.co.uk/cbfs_lib/thumbnails.php?album=3.) Slow, but serene and quite calming. Which is good, since this flight transits restricted military airspace... Ooops! Here's the flight path: And here's the flight plan download (zipped up, FSX IFR .pln file) : Click to download .zip file Flight images: Shortly after take-off from Shawbury AB, enjoying the pleasant flying conditions. Near the first waypoint, discovered football stadium (soccer for the Americans.) And what a handsome bloke flying the aircraft. Just a pleasant, comfortable flight... Approaching Caernarfon ... And having landed and slowed to a stop before the tire marks on the runway were left behind.

Thank you, Owen. Grrr... AvSim, why do you change up your image posting code every week?? :(

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
Trying this again... Yaaay! It works (but I see the forum still automatically changed my posted code... ) The flight itself: Image 4 to the right, below is the McKay Ranch airstrip, waypoint #1. Nice and tiny... Once out of the mountains, the scenery flattens out to rolling prairie, with some deep cutouts made by rivers. Crop Circle! Well, not the UFO kind, but rather a playful farmer. Taxiing after touchdown at White Sulphur Springs, then parked with all my safety gear out.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
I do hope I'm not boring anyone with these weekly updates, but frankly I'm having fun with it. This morning's flight was a compilation of bad ideas... but it all ended up well enough. I wanted to fly over some Orbx scenery areas that haven't been getting a lot of attention lately, so I chose a small airstrip in Wyoming as the starting point: WY06, Luckinbill airstrip. I didn't realize how small this bugger was until I made the choice of flying Carenado's CR22 GTS and loaded in at Luckinbill. I'm pretty sure the end of the runway was about twelve feet in front of my nose gear. At least it seemed that way... But the CR22 has plenty of power, and being lightly loaded with only myself, full fuel and 50 pounds of stuff' in the boot the aircraft took off without issue. For those who might be planning on flying this, I'd suggest something a bit more bush capable than the CR22. At least for the beginning and first waypoint. Be sure to set your fuel mix for a high alt take off. Luckinbill is wayyy up in the mountains (6600 feet if I'm reading the sectional correctly.) Stop #1 turned out to be an exercise in touch-and-goes for me... It's listed in PlanG as MT10 : McKay Ranch, Roscoe, Mt. I made three approaches and three times could not slow down enough to land on this postage stamp in the CR22. I may try a few more practice runs there another time, just for short-field experience in a slippery aircraft. After that debacle I was happy enough to fly on and see what Orbx has done ... and yep, they managed to capture a farmer having a bit of fun by arranging his crop cutting (in spring?) into a big circle with an 'arrow' in it. Quite cool The weather turned nasty on me then, and while I like flying real weather most of the time, I turned on Opus' 'fair weather' for a better visual experience. Besides, I nearly ran into a mountain which would have spoiled the whole flight. Here's the FSX flight plan, zipped up and ready to use: ->Download Link<- And now, the images: My meandering path as shown in PlanG: ... Grrr... now my usual method of posting images isn't working correctly. Every time I enter the usual code, the forum software changes it to something else. So for now, no flight images. Note to admins... Umm... Why the change? Somebody is messing with normal BBCode usage on this forum, it's been made quite frustrating to work with now.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
Grrr... Had this post all done but then the forum's weirdness today struck and now I've got to re-submit the whole dang thing... ((sigh)) Today's morning flight: Hoonah seaplane base in Alaska (Orbx so. Alaska scenery) to Sitka seaplane base, via Goulding Lake and Suloia Lake (for some impromptu virtual fishing.) The fishing waypoints and final waypoint are part of the Tongass Fjords scenery area that is sandwiched between the Orbx scenery areas of Southern Alaska and Pacific Fjords. The fit between the different scenery areas is seamless and completely transparent. Flight plan, in FSX .pln format, zipped up: Download Link | .zip file @ ~750 bytes Images (click on a thumb-nail to open the full sized .png format image in a new tab/window) : On shore, via amphibious wheels. Note the height of the fishing trawler... a bit higher than the bridge it just went under, without damage.

[RESOLVED] The AVSIM site is very slow
Seems odd that there is such an unusual slow-down at the Avsim site. I ran a 'trace route' to see if there was something amiss between my location and the Avsim I.P., but there was nothing wrong there. 40ms response time over 9 hops to get to Avsim from the corn fields of southern Minnesota, which is quite good.<br /><br />Of course I see well over 1200 visitors have been by within the last 15 minutes, so that much traffic is going to have an impact.<br /><br />Heck, the forums I administrate (phpBB on hosted domains) don't see 1200 visitors in a month, much less in 15 minutes. All I can say is "Kudos, Tom" ... the fact this site is operating well without being brought to it's knees by this month traffic is a bright feather in your cap. Edit: ?? Those line breaks were not put there by me. And I'm not using TapaTalk to post this. Odd.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
I thought those images were rather chilly as well, so this week I decided to go to the opposite hemisphere and check out New Zealand's North Island in autumn. Turns out it was rather cloudy, but certainly more green and warm. This morning's flight plan: Palmerston North to Hastings via Dannevirke. (.zip file containing a single .pln FSX flight plan file.) This is a short VFR flight, easily completed in less than an hour. Some images of the flight (click on the thumbnails below to open the full-sized 1920x1080 .png format screenshots in a new window/tab): The flight wasn't really anything very special, just a nice jaunt on Easter morning.

Sandy's Sunday Morning Flights (Caution: Multiple Large Images)
I am not sure what you mean... The Southern Alaska scenery has many glaciers modeled. I don't have any add-ons specifically tuned for ice textures. I do make use of the following add-ons: Orbx scenery; Opus weather; REX Essential for weather textures; Shade for atmospheric tweaking.
