[BufferPools] PoolSize=0 the holy grail of FSX performance...

Featured Replies

I dont know the why. They were modded laptop drivers to run some other DX9 games that also stutter on Vista/Win7-64, in FSX at full settings the FPS diference is about 100% the same as with BP=0 with no stuttering except you can remove BP from the CFG and let FSX do its own BP thing,--> as long as you can live with the filtering shortcuts, they are a huge step above anything you will ever find.Make sure you follow the instructions as I posted above.
What are filtering shortcuts?Where's the inf download file? This sounds crazy but I really would like to see how well these drivers perform on my system.I will backup everything first. Things are pretty good on my system right now. But, I'm always looking for better.

inf file download is right there in same link

Forgive me. I must be blind.I see download driver. No problem there. I see inf modified. Don't see download inf for 285.

Thats it, the "inf modified" file, there is only one in that link. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough. It has now been modified for almost every NV card not just 8800-285. Its been awhile.
the stuttering comes in my opinion either internally from FSX (something causing it), or overloading.
Word Not Allowed, I think that is the primary reason as to why people experience a seemingly perfect configuration on one flight, then go out the next day only to discover the magic formula is faltering, yes? Generally, my machine is set up to perform what I would call great, for most situations. But sometimes I'll go up in the same area, maybe the weather or time of day is different, and performance isnt' as good, quite noticeably. I think when this occurs, it's usually a case of as you say, overloading. My current overall approach: Make a couple of .bat files to shoot different fsx.cfg's in, and name them so you know what they represent, that you can take a guess as to what you'll need and start FSX with a fightin' chance to work as it should, without needing to stop and adjust midflight.Noel

What's up with this drivers? Anybody tested this? Is the quality the same as "normal" drivers? Where's the catch?I've seen too many "brilliant" ideas and "holy grails" and "miracle" tweaks...

I posted a topic in the hardware section re frame rates:Have noticed the frame rates recored by ati tools in full screen are much higher than FSX values, any body else have this.(they are similar in Windows mode)did'nt get any response so as this topic is about bufferpools and frames rates and the v-sync setting.would be interesting if anybody can check this as ati is showing FRS over 60 on my set up and as we are using this value to tweak!HP Compaq dc5750 small form factorAmd 64 Athlon x2 3800+ dual core 4gb ramAti hd2400xt graphics card (256) low profile card fittedDell E228WFP & SyncMaster 172V monitor'swindows xp sp3fsx sp2CH Products FlightSim Yoke & Pro PedelsTBM @80-poolsize @ 0 at the momentgood results flying the 737pic in the demo PNW

Hey guys just an update on the topic that won't dieI pulled my 285 2gb out of one of my builds to move it over to a triplehead system, and had to install an older GTX 280 1 gb, I was leery about the lower vram at first but after getting it in, and overclocking it, it's running great, just a fast and smooth as the 2gb 285 on a 1920 x 1200 display. I seem to be having the best luck artifact-wise with the 196.34_desktop_winxp_64bit_english_beta.exe drivers, no more random spikes or missing ground textures(the newest drivers were pretty bad for these) except over the absolute densest autogen (take a flight from SBCC over the rainforrest and you'll see what I mean). Now I have to get that 285 into a triplehead setup and see how it does.cheers.

I've been watching this topic with others and just wanted to share my results. Before I'd been using NickN's guide pretty much to a 'T' with decent results. I'd get the odd loss of textures from time to time, usually on a long PMDG MD-11 flight, as well as some random sound popping. I was running mostly medium settings and using Nhancer with 8xs.I recently updated vid drivers from trusty 182.50 to the latest 197.13 for the game bfbc2 and those settings didn't play nice with my old FSX settings so here I am. First I just changed my BufferPool from 20000000 to BP=0 and wow, immediate difference. Had some pretty bad stuttering but strangely the flight seems smoother. Well after tweaking and reading and tweaking I decided to delete the fsx.cfg and start from scratch but I wanted to test Ulf B's settings on pg 28 of this thread where he used SLI and holy smokes it works. I uninstalled Nhancer and instead use the Nvidia control panel. I recently upgraded to a 32" HDMI LCD and needed a higher AA and I'm now able to use 16x. Of note is the memory usage which with one card seemed to max at 4-500mb and now with sli it uses 400 on each card.I've played around with FSX scenery settings and even mostly maxed it does pretty good but still drops to 10fps over Anchorage, AK using UTX Alaska. :( To reduce stutters at this level of detail I played with the settings and found a happy medium with:Bufferpools=0texture max load 1024texture bandwidth multi=60 (80+ =texture corruption)upperframelimit=25 (higher =more stuttering)FFTF=0.20 (was using .15 but .20 'feels' better)Nvidia control panel:16xansio16xaamultisamplingextensionlimit offprerendered frames 2max performancesli perf mode Nvidia recommended (its on globally)texture filtering clamptexture quality high qualitythreaded optimization ontriple buffering onforce vsyncq9650 at 3.9*evga 790i Ultra*2x2 ddr3 2000*gtx285 x2*velociraptor x2 one dedicated to FSX*FSX*GEX*UTX/Alaska*REX*UT2 (@90-30)*Trackir4With the above settings 'lighter' planes such as the carando's are definatly do-able. Currently, the PMDG MD-11 will cause corruption after about 30min. The fps will be maxed at 25 but going from fullscreen to windowed will crash the vid driver. Prior to that it seems fine.In a month or two I'm going to be doing a total upgrade, and right now I'm planning on keeping the 2 gtx285's so it'll be interesting to compare how an i7 with ssd's perform with SLI.Hope this helps in some way and if anyone has any other modifications to try let me know. :(

.. I am getting a bit tired of upgrading, and not been satisfied, until years later...Johan
I can almost guarantee you that you will never be satisfied, especially if one spends his cognitive and intellectual efforts based primarily on comparing to an ideal or a quest, or a neighbor's setup. It is the way of the world, not just FSX.Allen

I have an i7 950 but have not wanted to OC it yet... I don't run AI but every slider maxed, and have almost tweaked the game perfectly. I'm ALMOST there. Once I OC I can start adding AI and will finally reach that plateau!

Hahaha! :( David David David..... I hate to be the bringer of bad news... but... as you think you're just going to get to that plateau... it moves just a little bit higher.. a hesitation will creep in.. some flashing will occur... the screen will freeze... it will go black... the stuttering will come back; you'll need better cooling... it still wont be able to handle everything at max, in a thunderstorm; over Seattle, over Manhatten.FSX was built for tweaking - not flying, you see! We are the "tools" that Microsoft, Intel and AMD use as guinea-pigs - to test their products! That's what this is all about. :( :( B)

LOL Oh trust me I have been there before, for years and years of tweaking FSX and FS9 but I am pretty good. PMDG 747, ASE, REX textures, UTX, in bad weather. Sure my frames are only 15 but I can accept that.

Oh that is so true!!! Today I decided to remove my FSX link from the desktop, my tweaking links etc. I figured the last time I seriously flew was like a month ago or so. Not even enjoyed my new machine with everything in FS9... which is now always at 40-60fps totally smooth. So next thing I am gonna be doing is some flying soon, in the sim that WORKS. No flashing, no problems... Seeya some time again guys :(
