And another one. This doesn't look good to me. Is the bufferpools setting I have doing this? Not good!

Hi Noel, have a look at Google Earth or Bing. Those are forestry cutblocks, which are a very common sight in the Pacific Northwest. We've included tens of thousands of these based on current forestry databases. The exposed soild retains snow longer, which is why they look brighter than the surrounding forests in early and late winter. They are definitely something to get used to especially since neither default FSX nor any third-party land class/texture package represent cutblocks.Cheers, Holger

Holger,Are these shots some weird season/weather combo? From all the pix I have seen so far that show the season changes the tree foliage shows up green when it should be much more brown, late Fall going into Winter should be brown shrubs, grasses, de-nuded trees, dead leaves on the ground (other than the conifers).Fall shots, look great from what I have seen but then it goes back to more of a green in Winter..??? Maybe this is a East vs. West sort of thing?I have to admit I have not been very north on the West coast during the fall/winter but around here in the east at these northern latitudes that wouldn't look right at all.Still, look forward to my PMW purchase when I return home!

Hi there, winter is the rainy season here in the Pacific Northwest and meadows and fields tend to look greener than during the dry summer and fall. However, the deciduous trees and shrubs do lose their leaves in FTX PNW and the ground textures have been carefully edited so that each deciduous tree crown imprint is brown as well. On the other hand the conifers stay green (and >90% of native trees here are conifers) so we often have this strong green-white contrast in early and late winter. For example, see these cutblocks near Pemberton: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50....mp;t=h&z=15 . Depending on tree age and time of day the forests can look browner, like http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=49....mp;t=h&z=15 , which is actually a closer match to our winter conifer textures.Cheers, Holger

Anyone take a pic of kvuo (pearson field) for me? I really hope when they do kpdx that they do kvuo as well.

KVUO is a separate project from KPDX. I'm slated to do Pearson at some point this year, but I haven't decided where it stands in the order of projects yet.

Holger already said it elegantly, but I'll reiterate with an example. I was out at Twin Oaks Airpark a couple of weekends ago shooting a video, and I noticed that while the trees were bare, the grass was a brilliant emerald green. The only reason I took note was because I had just been working on the photoreal terrain for the Orbx version of the airport, and this green was like nothing that I could find in the aerial shots, which were taken in summer. I grew up in the East and now live in the PNW, and I can tell you, the seasons operate under different rules here.

Thanks Holger,I knew ther must be a good reason for it but it just was looking odd to me, been color correcting a lot of data lately for parts on the opposit side of US and it just was messing with my head.

Thanks Holger I did some more flying and determined that was indeed the intention. As real as it is ;o) Yes, nice touch on the snow thing I remember that as well. I lived in Port Angeles for 4 y and Port Orchard for 2y. As a teenage I lived south of Powell River BC on a couple of small islands. Very fun to fly around there again. Very nice work indeed.

Thanks Bill for the great explanation as well. You guys have been doing such a great job, just what the FSX community has needed!Heading out to Yosemite as soon as the Doc gives the Ok, I know its not nearly the same as up north. Here in good ole Upstate NY (Rochester) its a bit Brown (and Grey and cold)...Image5(2).jpgImage4%20(2).jpgImage2%20(2).jpgIf you guys start heading this way, please please give me a heads up so can stop this sickness! :)Paul

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

I do think the Western US is so dramatic and varied that I agree-I'd like to see them done. On the other hand, even though Michigan is fairly flat (the U.P. has a range of "mountains"), the huge number of beautiful lakes in addition to the Great Lakes, islands in the lakes, make this area quite interesting and beautiful to fly over-especially when it is not winter!
Thank you Geoff. Michigan is a beautiful state and it gets no respect. I posted links to a bunch of the Pure Michigan commercials over at ORBX as well. I know there are other great places for ORBX to concentrate on but some has to stand up for the world's whipping post.

Thanks Geof,Its 5.1in/pix, the Geotiffs are a ...huge as spit out from Global Mapper, then some color & filter manipualtion, mask layers then compile. Takes a while so only churning it out here and there. But I cant compete with these guys, I really love the whole well thought out package, who ever is heading the art department team at ORBX is doing a great job! - Something that as a whole the Aces team didnt get to do for FSX, I think they got cut short if I remember correctly. This stuff from ORBX just oozes with a natural, realistic sense of color and scale that goes or blends together very well! Now that hardware is starting to catch up I think ole FSX is really starting to shine!Cheers!Paul

Even though I am just the admin there, I do believe it has to do with the fact that every single bit is handcrafted :) Some excellent comments and shots in this thread, I am chuffed PNW is a succes :)
