What about the PMDG 747?

Featured Replies

We all know how well the MD-11 turned out - The PMDG team went all out and created an extremely complex and beautiful aircraft. And then they did it again with the J41, and now they're about to release their biggest project to date - the PMDG 737NGX. But what about the aging 747? Compared to the MD-11, the J41 and the NGX the 747 must be ridiculously outdated in terms of complexity, just like the old 737. What are your thoughts on this? Will there be a PMDG 747X 2.0, or are you happy with it the way it is now?

I think Ryan said not too long ago in respose to a similar question, if they were going to revisit the 747 it will be as a whole new a/c not just a VC update, at least that is how I understood it.Keep in mind though, they still have 3 a/c to complete, the NGX, 777, and Dash-8, so I would imagine it maybe sometime before we could see a new 747.

I'd prefer PMDG work on the 777, instead of updating the 747. A lot of routes nowadays are being taken over by 777s (eg. Singapore airlines, Emirates, etc) or 'buses. The 747X is still the best 747 on the market.

What is not realistic on the 747? Im not being a smartass either i Want to know, I always assumed that airplane was bang on like the real thing. Ron Hamilton

In my opinion, the 747 only needs a little VC refresh, because as far as systems go, PMDGs 747 seems to be a very very good sim. But at this point in time, if you are going to refresh the 747, you might as well redo the systems to match those of the new 747-8, since Boeing no longer makes the 400 variant. I would prefer effort to go into a Dreamliner (which I figure to be very possible, as when they finish their planed three aircraft, the Dreamliner should already be in service.)Or if they figure not enough data, access for the Dreamliner to be availbe to make a quality simulation for it, take a stab at the 767.

Remember PMDG have two teams, one of them is working on the Dash 8, and the 737 team is working on the 737 (duh) and soon the 777, hopefully they will re-vist the 747 after it, but I really think all that needs updating is the VC.

hi Scott, the current 744 also lacks Wide Screen support for the 2-D cockpit (my biggest complaint with the current model). i also agree with the OP that it's starting to show it's age compared to some of the newer PMDG birds anyway. i would like to see an updated version of the 744/748 myself.happy flyin, Tim Wheeler

Don't know. I started out with the MD-11X, and J-41. Just got the 744X a few weeks ago to kill time till NGX comes out. Systems wise I think it is on par. Can see where you guys are coming from with the VC. I think it still looks good though. To me it is about the same as the MD-11X. I mean I would rather see them go on to the 777, -8, and whatever comes down the line after that. The J-41 was a pretty good suprise and hopefully there is some kind of suprise aircraft like that planned for the future.

We always want updated stuff and more complexity, but one great thing about the 747 as it stands is its current state and its stability. As a tri-holer fanatic, I still go back to the 747 on a regular basis. As complex as the MD-11 is in comparison, the 747 IMO is still a cutting edge flightsim model and a real pleasure.

The 747 is already very good. Instead of updating it, I would prefer more good aircraft add-ons. Airbus 330 and 340, Boeing 787.

I'm almost in the same boat as you except I started out with the J41 and bought the 744X a few weeks ago as well after spotting it for $30 at Fry's and wanting something new to kill the time until the NGX comes out.Prior to getting the 744X I flew the LDS767 primarly and I find that the VC of the 744X is a step up from the VC of the LDS 767, but not quite as nice as the J41. I think the systems and everything else works well in the 744X and the only thing I could really see them improve is the performance in the VC as far as FPS and of course the looks. Other than that, I am really happy with the 744X and I basically haven't flown anything else since I bought it 3 or 4 weeks ago. It's also proven not to be the FPS hog that I was lead to believe from so many posts I have read in Avsim saying it was hard on FPS. Frankly, I get about the same FPS in it that I do in the J41. The only thing was that prior to converting the external textures to DTX3, it seems like it was a little bit of a hog from the external view, which I dont visit often anyway.I will say as well that now that I own one copy of it and am pretty happy, after the 737 comes out, I probably wont be flying it, or any other planes in my hanger for a VERY long time and that would make it harder for me to repurchase the 747 if it was sold as a completely new product and not a discounted upgrade.

This has already been discussed [i started a post couple of weeks back]Ryan has said that they are considering making a new V2 of the 747. Key word here "Considering" doesnt mean they will or wont.for me i would die of a heart attack if the 777 was released tomorrow and pmdg were "hiding" it all along :),, waking up to the real world, a 747 would be lovely indeed, i think the most well known aircraft on the planet [747 in general]

As much as I love the 747 and wouldn't mind it being updated a bit, I would rather PMDG focus on other add-ons. Airbus series or 757/767....

Captain sim seems to have stopped updating there 767, and it needs some new features in it. A PMDG 767 would be amazing. I would pay 100 pounds or dollars for a quality 200/300/400 ER and ERF.

I think Ryan has said there isn't a plan to update the 744 since they have so completely updated their approach to programming that they would need a bottom-up redo. But, maybe that will change at some point in the future if MS updates the Sim, DX11 gets supported, etc. This thread/idea comes up a fair amount. I must say, however, that I don't get it. Why update an old aircraft, no matter how wonderful, when there are thousands of other planes that they've never done? How about a Biz Jet, or a CRJ, or.... whatever? The 747 variants are wonderful, sharp looking birds, but why go back when we can go forward? Personally, I'm not sure I would buy another 744, and almost certainly wouldn't in FSX. Maybe in MS Flight.
