It's not as doom and gloom as the title sounds. As they said "It is with great sadness that I need to let the community know that we will be ceasing further development on products until we develop a proper anti piracy measure to beat the rampant piracy of our products."So they will still be selling what they have and supporting it until they use a better anti-piracy measure. They will probably have to use esellerate like FSDT does since it seems to be at this moment the most full proof way to protect their product. Although a hand full of people will complain because they feel it too "intrusive" and not purchase, it's probably the best way they can protect their work since even the Flight1 method is not as full proof.

Maybe I should have said "temporarily" shutting down.As far as esellerate being the "most full proof" way to protect software....not sure. As soon as a product is released to the public it is very soonish also on some torrent sites. If a product does not show up on torrent sites within one or 2 days then people are not interested. it's the usual law of supply and demand at work there too.

Unfortunately none of it's 100% full proof protection, but products that use esellerate seem to be much harder to crack and pirate compared to other 3PD anit-secutiry measures. I don't have any facts to back it up, but from what Umberto has said in the past and judging from what you can find in google searches, it seems to be the case. Probably why Aerosoft just went to their "launcher" system as a new step.Regardless, it's too bad that Nemeth has had to suspend releases of new products to to this.

...and some people wil still claim that piracy doesn't harm anyone!

Tough decision. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. The problem is, there is no fool proof protection against piracy. If the pirate is dedicated enough, any protection can be cracked. The idea is to find that balance between offending the end user and making it more difficult for the casual hacker. I wouldn't want to be a developer in this market.I wish them luck - they have fine products.Vic

Many products are found mainly if not only in "closed communities" and you don't find them by running google searches. But they are out there.

Well, I can't say I blame em, I'd do the same thing if people were nicking my stuff. I've bought a few Nemeth choppers, they're pretty good, especially their little FSX Loach, so it's a bit of a bummer to hear that, but that's what all those dipstick pirates do to us.Al

Who claims such things and where? And what's your suggested countermeasure then?Anyway, I'm hoping for Nemeth to get back to normal development soon since no progress there means that you can only sell the things which are already there. Since markets need the addition of new things, that's a business downside too.Following some more or less stereotype thinking around, only protection seems to drive us people to actually buy things. So I may be outside of that rule (together with some others), since I even buy stuff which is there for free. That's weird, at least when sticking to stereotypes again.

How on Earth would a developer know how many thieves pirated their software? :(

They wouldn't. At best it will be guestimate. I think what happened in this latest case is that the sales for their just-released product started to drop off significantly at the same time the product hit the public torrents. As a two minute excercise I had a look at which Nemeth products are available on public trackers and the short answer is that all of them are. Makes me wonder what was so special this time around to warrant such a public outcry? Perhaps the timeframe between release and "crack" was so quick?

It may just have something to do with some of the remarks made from people who did buy their product. On another forum the following observation from a paying customer:"I bought it the day it came out. The dynamics are horrid. In this particular case I'm not sure who the real pirates are. Now Nemeth is going to put all his effort into complaining about piracy instead of fixing it. Plus I have little hope a patch will solve much because it needs to be jacked up and have a whole new set of dynamics rolled in under it."Regards, Mike Mann

Well, it's how we lost PSS and that was a loss.

Antipiracy. I wonder how hard it would be to use an encrypted installer that is modified for each purchaser. So that during installation it displays the buyers name and email address. Then within the model itself you have a name tag somewhere on the dash or inconspicios that displays the same thing. Be a pain to recompile for every user, but if some one bought it then uploaded it to pirate sites everyone would know who did it.

Aerosoft's launcher does pretty much exactly that with some of their recent products - it personalises each installation (deep within the code I presume). At best this type of system gives you an opportunity to plug leaks by targeting (usually young & naive) individuals who share their legal copies with a couple of buddies and so on down the line. The catch is that once the product is on public trackers or other file-sharing sites there is not much (if anything at all) you can do about it and it remains available for download and installation - perhaps using this or other basic workaround. So it works in some departments but not in others. And of course it costs a fair whack of money to develop and support such a system so that must be measured against the always rather nebulous figure one estimates one is loosing from file-sharing in the first place. Good luck with that!Disclaimer: I do not represent Aerosoft in anyway. These are just my own thoughts as a regular reader of their forums.
