How Did PMDG Get This Name?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering in my lost and disoriented way, how did a software simulation developer choose the name Precision Manuals Development Group? Is the word "Manuals" in the name referring to reading manuals, or physically working something, like the buttons and knobs or an airplane cockpit?I know they sell some excellent manuals, because I have them for the MD11 and NGX, and I love them, but it seems that PMDG's focus is more on building high quality simulation than producing manuals. Hi there, I could be wrong but I believe that they started out by producing in depth flight ops manuals before actually creating simulated aircraft, hence the name! However I do stand by to be corrected...as usual! :-)

Also, to add to that, its amazing how far we have come... Behold, the PMDG 767 for FLY. This was over 10 years ago! http://www.flightsim...review/pmdg.htm Hey, scored 100/100 laugh.png Lets see if the NGX lives up to this Alien.gif

IIRC, PMDG's first product was a manual for another company's payware 747, hence the name. -jr

Yes, Robert wrote some manuals for the Aerowinx PS1 - Precision Simulator 1 a DOS based CBT trainer, hence the name. Back in those days , 1997 ! we had a small, very active and friendly forum on the PS1 website, the internet was a lot smaller back then, we all knew each other reasonably well through the forum. It was great when I got involved as a tester/tech advisor on PMDG's FS9 747,(that itself was some 6 years ago..blimey) to see some old familiar names from those early PS1 days were also involved. Great days. We still had kids pretending to be real pilots on the forum even back then. Jon Bunting

I believe the reason is that the original founders of the company were Manual Laybour, and Manny Stinks. Not sure if that's true, however. unsure.png

Thanks for posting that. Lots of memories just came flooding back. I remember my jaw dropping on the floor when I saw the systems modelling that PMDG had created for Fly! IMHO the Fly! series was way ahead of it's time. So sad that it had to end. I found these youtube videos if anybody's interested. Can't find one of the PMDG 767 or 757 though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPQNiyHM9hchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL6GUUvoEig&feature=related Still, we have the PMDG 737NGX coming out soon, looks like a simulator within a simulator, LOL! Can't wait! Cheers Rhydian Yeoman

The PS1 747 was far and away the best until the PMDG was released.I have in front of me the e-mail from Robert dated 01 Mar 98. confirming that I am registered as a valid ownerof the 747-400 users guide.I still have this guide (3 ring binder) including the 1.3 u[dates.)PS1 first came as 4 floppy discs! PS3 (there was no PS2) came on cds.Things have only got better!!David

I still have the 757 and the 767 on a CD around here somewhere. I didn't get to experience the 777 as I didn't have a PC, only a Mac. Maybe some time for S's and G's, I'll bust out the 'ole iMac and load up Fly! and the old airplanes. -jr
