Why can't a lone programmer develop FSX SP3 and sell it for profit?

Featured Replies

Lately, I have been wondering why someone or a company like Aerosoft hasn't taken the initiative to develop FSX SP3, which would optimize the code to fully utilize latest hardware technologies, and address certain FSX design limitations, and then turn it around for profit? I would imagine this would be a huge cash crop. I'd be willing to drop at least $200 for that. Does that violate software protection laws? Would it still violate those laws if it was done for free? Any volunteers? :)

Prepar3D isn't all that different from FSX, I don't understand the hype. People who have tested both products barely noticed a difference (unless you like to sim subs!). V1.2 release notes which was released only a few days ago was not impressive. Besides, FSX addons may not be fully functional when running them on Prepar3D.I was thinking more along the lines of an actual service pack for FSX.

Because it would violate so many laws that the lawyers wouldn't even know where to start... would still violate those laws if done for free, and because the amount of time and work required to reverse engineer and hack the code makes it completely impractical. DJ

HelloTo create a service pack you would need the source code to FSX only Lockheed and Microsoft have that. You did not find the feature list of P3D 1.2 impressive wow, what type of things were you looking for in your service pack. They have added SLI support with DX11 support next up, how much extra hardware support were you looking for? They have fixed the menu bugs, Improved the multiplayer code, improved Simconnect., improved the landclassingAdded the possibility of using 4096 ground textures and added the possibility of using an external flight engine.FSX is a dead end platform, nobody is going to fix it for you, microsoft have given up on it and Lockheed is your only chance of seeing a SP3. Pop over to the Lockheed forum and tell the Devs what you would like fixed, chances are it is already on their To-Do list.

I kind of view Flight as the spiritual successor to FSX. I think it will be really good. It's a shame Lockheed is keeping all those little fixes and tweaks to themselves. I don't think they would lose any money by giving them to the flight simulator community for free, or even as payware, because I think some would pay for that kind of thing. It's impossible for a third party to do anything like a service pack. That would require the source code, and the proper rights to re-distribute the modifications.

Jimmy and jallen, you folks should pay a visit to the avsim flight forum, people have become disenchanted with flight recently, some prominent individuals lost their confidence with MS.

I wouldn't believe everything till ms flight is released its all rumors and speculations for now.

HelloBut they are giving them back to the community as payware$9.99 per month. So you really think a company such as Lockheed i.e a fairly serious outfit would purchase the source code from MS, hire some of the ex aces guys to build them a first class military visualisation system and then think, Hell! why don't we just release all of this for free. I don't quite understand your comments here because your started this thread wanting someone to make another service update or patch for FSX... But when someone points you to P3D you respond by saying its not all that different than FSX... So what exactly are you asking for? P3D is a fully supported FS that is constantly updated, unlike MS FSX which is patched once maybe twice then forgotten about... P3D is more like X-Plane regarding support, both are updated when he need arrises, which in the PC gaming world is quite often. I think most folks here need to come to grips that if Flight turns out to be what many of the rumors claim it is... or it lands somewhere in between the rumors and a console based game. P3D is going to be where its at. MS, if they fail to deliver on Flight instead move towards their real bread and butter money makers which is console gaming... they most likely won't make another FS for many years, especially if console gaming profits keep going up like they are. Give P3D a try...

Except that far too many developers who actually are part of the MS Flight development process have come out in recent weeks completely disgruntled and upset about what MS has done with Flight. A couple even broke NDA's to inform the FS community because they felt it just that important. Call them what you want to, people who broke contracts or even whistle blowers but the point is, something is up in the MS Flight world and its got many developers feathers ruffled... I hope Flight is what everyone here wants it to be, but the more I look into it, I fear MS has shifted away from the traditional PC FS SIM towards something else that we won't like, and that is why so many developers are upset.

Lets see. A civlian simulator program, purchased by a military contractor company undoutingly with tax payers (My) moneys because it is an experimental D.O.D program
HelloWell if Lockheed did in fact buy the source with (your) tax payers money, but are letting me subscribe for $9.99 then that's just beyond cool.tokermax I really appreciate your tax dollars mate.

Yes, thanks for funding Prepar3D for all of us non yanks. ;-)It really sounds like Prepar3D might be the next platform for serious simmers, as long as they make drastic changes to the code.
