Are you waiting on Flights release before you buy a new PC?

Featured Replies

I am. Are you? If so where are Intel at with their latest chipset release? What motherboard / processor are you looking at? Obviously i'm going to try and get the best performance for my budget at the time of Flights release in 2011 / 2012. Will we be beyond the i3, i5, i7 stage by then and onto something new from Intel?

I'm planning on getting into the Ivy Bridge chip sometime during the second half of next year. It's a 22nm processor which should boost performance considerably. It's due for release in March I believe. I'll get Enspire Digital in Sydney to build a suitable system around the chip.

Yep. I'm waiting for new chips from Intel before I order. The new i7 3000 series are expected in november. I'm building the rig myself with quality components from Asus and Corsair.

My last x3 FS PCs over the past 10 years have been Dells simply because i wanted stability backed up by a warranty. No fun i know. Ivy Bridge in April 2012 will be my aim. If Flight releases before then the temptation to go Sandy Bridge instead will be difficult.

If I could get a stock computer that suited my needs I would, but sadly I still haven't found one in 15+ years.

Am I waiting? Nope, Flight is intended to have wide appeal, so they won't be making it where you need the kind of stuff hard core simmers have to buy to get over 20 fps in FSX with stacks of add-ons, because if they did, it would not have wide appeal. Any old multi core PC that an average person who buys games at the time of its release will probably run it okay, since they are the intended target for purchase. If you are expecting Flight to visually blow FSX out of the water, and as a consequence require a liquid-cooled mainframe to run satisfactorily, I suspect you are in for a disappointment, because on some comparison shots between Flight and FSX which I've seen, FSX actually looks better. Its a waste to buy Dells just for a warranty and stability. I'd guess the majority of us that use custom builds have no problems with stability and dont forget that components still have warranties even if they aren't built by Dell or one of the other big companies. Take a walk on the not so wild side and saddle up to a custom built rig that can better handle the rigors of the FSX world. Not personally waiting to build for Flight since it seems like its not really going to be an FSX replacement. Maybe a build for future versions of P3D would be a better idea.

Any of the core i series from x58/p55 up should have no issue with Flight... or any game in the foreseeable future. I would only think about upgrading if you are still running a core 2 or earlier based system OR you just want an excuse to buy the next gen.

Yep going to talk a walk on the wild side. A guy at work custom builds the PCs so will prob take that route next time!

I used to be the same years ago in respect to buying Dells for the reason you cited as far as being concerned about the warranty and stability. A few years ago I decided to take the plunge and skip buying a Dell and had a shop build me a rig. Not only did I save a bunch of money, I got a much better rig for lot less money. I've had it for 4 years now and its been just as reliable as my old Dells, plus its overclocked.Unless you want to spend a fortune on a competitive Dell, you can get a lot better system, customized, and just as stable as a Dell for a lot less money by having one built or doing it yourself.

And if you cant get FSX max performance from a sandy bridge you wont from a Ivy League neither. The limits of FSX have been meant!
Oups!! naaaaa, start adding some 4096 resolution and complex sceneries and you'll need all the power you can get, (that goes for Flight also). PCI-e 3.0 are in the way, soon you'll be able to use DDR3 quad chanels....trust me FSX "ain't" maxed out yet.

Maybe sarcasm? ;)It is a 3D PC game...best rule of thumb is...we'll want the best PC we can afford.
