Checking the wind conditions before landing

Featured Replies

In Free Flight, I would like to chose a suitable runway for landing based on wind conditions.The only way I've found to get info on the wind, is the HUD which I typically do not use..SOO.. is there a way to turn the HUD on/off without going to the setup menu?OR, is there some other way to check for wind? I've looked for wind socks but have not found (at Lihue).With weather conditions "Low and Threatening" there is enough crosswind to blow my RV6 off therunway, even with full rudder to compensate..

I also miss that. I looked at the map and various other places,but there isn't any information at all about the wind, not even on the weather options screen. And I also don't have the HUD enabled...

bumpI would like if I could only have the wind speed and direction showing. Anyone know if this can be achieved? Alexander

During beta I requested both the ability to toggle the HUD from a keyboard command and optionally toggle just the wind display. It was too late in the development cycle to add these at the time, and I have no idea if they'll be added in the future.I also requested a "declutter" keyboard command to get rid of everything else, if only to take screen shots. Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

All the airports, except the ag strips, have wind socks. Generally, they are inside the segmented circle when there is one, or in the usual places otherwise. However, they are very hard to see so you will have to fly over the airport (or rather, buzz it!) in order to get a look, then fly your pattern.This was a common complaint during the beta, but, as usual, no time to fix it (or at least not yet.)Please make your view known to MGS by sending them a polite and courteous message - we want visible wind socks! We want ATIS! We want charts or a briefing! Oh yes, also add "please".Best regards.Luis

The windsocks aren't much less visible than they are in the rw. The difference is that there are aerodrome charts that at least tell you where to look for them. I suspect the larger airports should have more than they do in Flight.Mike

The problem is video game clarity of distant objects vs what a human can do in real life. At 400ft in the game you can BARELY make out the windsock.. Now doing a 300-400ft buzz of the runway at a international airport would probably get you a visit upon touchdown by a couple of angry fellows ready to present you with shiny new pair of steel bracelets.I understand the chances of being able to tune in to get weather conditions is slim, but heck, I'd even be ok with something like this.Script the windsocks to read the wind conditions and write it out to an overlay around the windsock.Like so6b7e87ed.jpgThat is a windsock location btw.. I'm just below 400ft and it's nothing but a small spec.081ec070.jpg

I like that.

Seconded! The windsocks might be the correct size, but the limited resolution of todays hardware still means that you can't see them from pattern height, while in real life I can make out at least the general direction of a windsock from 3000ft.

I like that.

The one at my local airport is somewhat larger. I always thought they all were. Wouldn't matter in the game, as you still can't see it. I like the circle and arrow indicator.Hook

Now that would be very nice, a good suggestion. I hope they seriously consider doing so.

Great idea! I would consider that a workaround until ATIS can be implemented. :wink:

Apart from the windsocks you can also observe your plane's winddrift and possibly the movement of the trees. Not really ideal, but -to mutilate a Dutch expression - those are the oars we have to row with.
