How to improve your enjoyment of Flight and this Flight forum

Featured Replies

- At the top right of this forum you see your name.

- Click on your name to open a pulldown menu.

- Click on Manage Ignore Prefs.

- Click in the space underneath 'Add new user to my list' and start beginning to type the name of the person you would like to ignore completely.

- When the right name comes up, click on it and enable the ticks before Posts, Signature and Messages.

- Click on Save Changes.

That's it. I can guarantee you this will improve your enjoyment of Flight and this Flight forum a LOT. I just added a few names of people who keep on polluting this Flight forum with useless crap to the list and I can tell you, it feels great. Awesome feature. Some sort of 'Be your own mode' option. Love it. Give it a try, I'd say.

LOL..I do hope I'm not on that list, Jeroen (despite the crap )..But then if I am, I'll never know, because you'll never see this post

But seriously, I didn't know you could do that..Not that I would, as I think it spolis the fun..It's always good to debate IMO, even if the debate seems stale

Hello

If you close yourself of to differing opinions you will never learn anything of value.

Jeroen probably cannot see this post though

LOL Nothing wrong with a debate or discussion, but I do get sick of some people using the same old negative crap about Flight everytime.

BTW The advantage of the ignore system here on Avsim is that you do not see the posts etc. of the ignored person, but you DO see a line saying 'This post is hidden because you have chosen to ignore posts by <name of person>, View it anyway?' And when you click on that line you can view the post anyway. So if you really, really, really want to (like if you are way too happy and need something to bring you down  ) you can still read the blocked posts.

I still can LOL

About learning things of value: I come here to enjoy my hobby and specially Flight, not to read crap about it. I am very interested in differing opinions but not when it comes to Flight. Simple as that. I am 50 and by now I know what I'd like to hear differing opinions about and what not. Flight isn't one of them.

Nowadays you get to see and hear more stuff than a person did in his whole life 350 years ago so filtering the information isn't a bad thing, really...

I do get sick of some people using the same old negative crap about Flight everytime

Totally agree. It is a bit like a stuck record. we should just open a public list of who does, and doesn't like Flight (with a 0-10, with 10 for I love it and 0 meaning I absolutely want to go and blow up Redmond VA offices) and then we can refer to it very time MS release another plane and make up the responses based on their dislike..

Still, I still read them, as I'm a masochist..

Jeroen probably cannot see this post though

See above..cue loads of ppl wondering if they've been blocked and for what LOL

Have to agree with Jeroen. In my years on the web, I think I have only found it necessary to put one person (ever) on ignore; but then again, I have never seen such ceaseless vitriol on the same subject over such an elongated period (I can usually happily find other places to be, if that happens)

Since this is unfortunately the only forum I can think of where actual debate/criticism is encouraged rather than rasberrys and jeering, its my natural home on the subject of Ms Flight. Should civil discusion prove impossible, or repeated trolling be obvious, I find myself unwilling to subject myself to attempts to infect the atmosphere with the same bile I can so regularly find elsewhere.

The end.

Ignore button is there for a reason. (at least until some people calm down)

Most forums systems do offer a similar option. They may be called different things but they all have the same effect of allowing you to ignore posters. Again in all the cases I am aware of you do see that a post was made and may be given the chance to preview it.

Taken to it's literal extreme however I could extrapolate to a situation where no one actually posts to anyone else. Certainly groups with differing opinions might starte ignoring each other instead of talking at each other and we could get multiple communities with narrow interest groups all operating independently of each other............

There is a big difference between "informed discussion/debating" and "repeated willfully ignorant ranting/raving, often off-topic."

The first type is welcome. The second type eventually go to the Ignore list with the other haters, trolls, and ######.

I hate the fact that it is not possible to edit posts after a few moments. I meant to say that one might spare a thought for moderators who cannot afford to turn folks off and have to (or should) read every post however unpleasant.

The only reasons I haven't left Avsim for good are:

1. I am completely loyal to Tom. I have been here a long time and I know that he wants to encourage a tolerant and civil community atmosphere where everybody can enjoy the hobby and share their fun. I share his goals and support him totally, whether we do the same kind of flying or use the same flight games or not.

2. The only way to preserve this kind of community is to not give up, to not let the fun spoilers and the haters take over. Those who share the same goals must continue to participate, the more actively the better, so as to not be overwhelmed, but rather to overwhelm them.

3. In the meantime, I use the Ignore list as a way of damage control, because incendiary comments from the haters provoke conflict, the entire forum becomes volatile as people respond, and it all quickly gets out of control. So, I block these fun spoilers so that I am not led to take part in the conflict, to preserve my peace and my enjoyment of the hobby.

At the moment, I have over 80 people ! on my Ignore list. Most of them have left the Flight forum, some have left Avsim :Loser: . But, some, about a dozen or two, are still here. Even in this thread. But, I never see anything they write.

I don't need debate, nor do I need conflict over a video game, over something that is supposed to be a fun pastime. For the moment, the Ignore list is the only way to ensure that my time at Avsim is not full of aggravation and conflict.

Winston Churchill had some zingy one-liners:

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.

If we open a quarrel between past and present, we shall find that we have lost the future.

Best regards to all those who enjoy fun.

I'm guilty of crap posts, too, and hope I'm not on the list!

We're all guilty of crap posts. Big difference between having a bad day or venting or just not thinking clearly occasionally and making it a second hobby. Before you know it there will be crap post DLC.

Your suggestion is very, very tempting Jeroen.

Well, it's er... nice (not the right word but I don't know another appropriate one) to see I am not the only one using the ignore list. I only have 2 people on it btw, haha, and actually I hope I won't have to add any more.

I'm guilty of crap posts, too, and hope I'm not on the list!

LOL Not yet. It's what styckx says:

Indeed. I also posted some crappy ugly posts but usually I at least try to be helpful and positive and contribute something worthwhile... Well, that's what I like to think anyway.

Well, the option is there... it's not a bad thing to do or anything like that. It really helps to filter out the rotten posts and make this place a nicer place to be, as Luis said! I am happy I started using the list because I found out that even when I try to NOT react to stupid posts, it can spoil my day (well, hour... or minute...) only reading them.

Thanks for the heads-up Jeroen...

No one has been blocked yet, but it has been tempting... :Waiting:

I liked your comment about the wisdom of filtration... Indeed, such measures are good for your health, in many ways!

I have noticed on several forums that the more 'extreme' posts seem to be from those that 'hide' themselves behind a gamertag or alias... hey, ho!

Cheers,

Nick
