May 6, 201214 yr http://news.yahoo.co...-171546904.html According to Windows engineering team member Steven Sinofsky (emphasis his), "Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray." In other words: If you want to watch that Bridesmaids DVD on your next plane trip, you're going to have to pay extra for software that will let you play it, even if your laptop already has a DVD drive. And don't think getting Blu-ray is an option — you can't play that straight from the box, either. If you're left scratching your heads, the rationale behind dropping DVD support is simple: It's about the bottom line. A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
May 7, 201214 yr This is the way it used to be all the way up to the first release of Windows XP. I think it was the Windows XP Media Center Edition that had the DVD Playback Support and from there on. Couldn't care less now because I can't remember the last time I watched a DVD Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
May 7, 201214 yr True or the last time I have bought one. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk William Sequeira
May 7, 201214 yr Hello The first time you want to read a PDF you will be in the same position, no biggie really, just D/L Foxit Reader. Same with DVD playback, just Google it and you will find plenty of freeware better than MS could supply.
May 7, 201214 yr I have not used MS media Player for years and years. I use VLC Media Player freeware
May 7, 201214 yr I have not used MS media Player for years and years. I use VLC Media Player freeware Same here. Works great! Chris Miller
May 7, 201214 yr VLC as well. Works great. Probably this decision has something to do with the Anti-trust case with Windows Media Player and the EU in the past. If Windows 8 causes another anti-trust complaint then that would mean another huge payout for MS. Not worth it seeing as the Windows Media Player isn't very popular anyways. May 7, 201214 yr Wait, what does DVD playback mean? Like actually watching DVDs or what? I'm using the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on Oracle VM VirtualBox. It sucks. I don't really understand what Microsoft is doing so far... I mean, the whole shut down thing... HOW THE CRAP DO YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER?!? Since there is no formal "start" menu, to turn off the computer, I've figured out that you have to log off, then click on the power button then Shut Down. i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB

May 8, 201214 yr Still better than when Microsoft removed the ability of Windows Me to run itself. I remember using Windows ME back when I was 8 or so. Even then it was aggravating. Joe Sherrill
May 8, 201214 yr I remember using Windows ME back when I was 8 or so. Even then it was aggravating. Windows ME, now that was a load of c**p. Historically, every alternate edition of Windows was a disaster. Based on that I'll be sticking with 7, it has never let me down to date ( touch wood) and I'm a fairly heavy user. Besides, I can't stand the "iphone-ish" , sorry "tiled" interface on 8. Anthony O'Brien
May 8, 201214 yr I will always have a special place in my geek heart for NT4 and Windows 2000. While most of my friends were suffering from BSOD, instability and all the growing pains of Windows 95, 98, and Me. I was bragging about how I haven't rebooted my computer in weeks. :Just Kidding: :Nerd: ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING / i9-9900k @ 4.7 all cores w/ NOCTUA NH-D15S / 2080ti / 32GB G.Skill 3200 RIPJAWS / 1TB Evo SSD / 500GB Evo SSD / 2x 3TB HDD / CORSAIR CRYSTAL 570X / IPSG 850W 80+ PLATINUM / Dual 4k Monitors
May 8, 201214 yr Im sticking with my "Windows 98" ^_^ Oh hell... I still watch Videos, Now they are atleast 20+ years old. I still watch videos. The ones I watch on the computer aren't in DVD format though. Netflix FTW! And Windows 98 was the 2nd best OS MS made. The best was 95. Kevin Hester, Indianapolis, Indiana
