Status of X-Plane 10 Development

Featured Replies

For well over a month, there has not been a Beta update to X-Plane 10. I've been checking about once a week by running the downloader (I have beta update box checked).

Anyone know what is going on, what they are working on, progress being made?

Next update is going to be huge! Main feature being becoming a 64bits application. I don't know all the details, but lots of things are coming soon

I too, have been waiting for 10.10. I can only assume they either found a few show stopping bugs or they decided to add a few additional items to the update. Im only guessing. Still it would be nice to have an official update from LR on whats going on with the patch. They have always been very open in the past.

...to enjoy X-Plane 10, you need a good sense of humor and the patience of Mother Theresa.

I agree - this wait is KILLING ME :) -- We were told 1-2 weeks for the update - that was about 5 weeks ago back in May wasn't it?

They could, at least give us some info on what they are doing and when it really might arrive. Beta releases usually happen quicker than 5 weeks between versions... SO, I have a feeling this update will include 64bit -- I know they said, they were doing the 64 Bit Mac version last - Linux version is complete already and windows they have pretty much ready to go. Mac is last ...

Well, I'm not really "waiting" for the new version, because I fly and enjoy 10.05r1. If you want to know if a new version is available, and get the news, you can also read these pages. It's faster than running the installer:

Happy flying !

10.10 will also bring Austin's plane to the default fleet, and it should fly by the numbers, so, I believe detailled design and tunning must be going on at LR Studios :-)

I too look fwd for xp10.10. I'm not a xp10 owner, I am a great MS FLIGHT enthusiast, but I really am willing to give xplane a new chance, and if it proves worth the wait, It'll become my 2nd sim (well ELITE has allways been here too....)

The seemingly haphazard nature of updates and their contents are one of the pitfalls of X-Plane which often catch new customers blindsided.

That X-Plane requires these updates to bring the product up to meet certain expectations is unfortunate enough, but without any information as to what is being worked on, existing and potential customers who are holding out for the repair of acknowledged issues are left in a real lurch. There are rarely any indications that issues will be addressed this month, this year, or even at all. More importantly, Laminar Research is under no obligation to actually complete any of these improvements - it's a very uncertain way of interacting with customers.

Contrast this with the MSFS series which upon purchase was essentially the complete and finished product, bugfixes aside. At least you KNEW what features you were/were not going to be getting down the road and could accept it for what it was (or wasn't).

Laminar Research's method for ongoing development is a serious culture shift from the way 99% of all entertainment titles are produced, which makes it quite a bit frustrating if you feel there are correctable shortcomings. It only serves to increase the importance of detailed communication to the customer base, which has been a perennial complaint of many users.

I know it's kept my $80 firmly in my pocket, and I can only imagine that it has prevent sales for scores of others, too.

FSX is far from a complete and finished product. And unfortunately, it will never get finished.

Thanks,

I also heard about the possibility of 64 bit coming as well as the reworking of the user interface to make it more "friendly." I suspect the user interface is presenting a pretty big challenge to the team.

I do follow the Xplane 10 developers blog website for updates.....but no mention of a pending beta release for a long time. It doesn't bother me about the piece meal approach to development. Since I primarily fly FSX, DCS A-10, Falcon BMS 4.3, and IL-2 1946 on-line with buddies, I have plenty to keep me busy.

However, I do have high hopes that X-Plane 10 will go big and position themselves as a potential replecement for the aging FSX software.

While I know your intent is to detract from FSX to soften the glare on XPX, your comments are incorrect. FSX is complete and it is finished. There will be nothing added by Microsoft, nothing fixed. FSX is what it is, warts and all.

If it makes you feel good to take criticism of X-Plane and turn it around to detract FSX, great. Good for you. My initial thoughts when reading the thread were that people new to the X-Plane world have and need to adjust to a different way of development. You could have mentioned this, as many other X-Plane converts have in the past. Going the "X-Plane sucks, but so does FSX" route benefits no one, IMO.

I too am waiting for 10.10. I understand that they might have encountered a serious bug that is preventing them from going live with 10.10 but atleast they can update us of what is going on. Austin said something about 10.10 releasing in 1 or 2 weeks and now after 5 weeks they are just silent. Very convenient.

As a matter of fact, my intent is to simply respond to "greggerm" and state that FSX is indeed incomplete. As is X Plane. X Plane will never be complete. That's why updates are constantly being worked on.

What an unusual statement. I have no idea what led you to that conclusion.

Who said X Plane or FSX sux? I certainly didn't. I said they both have their pro's and cons.

Why is it always FSX vs X Plane? Why is it that so many people who haven't even purchased X Plane feel the need to come in here and criticize it?

FSX is far from a complete and finished product. And unfortunately, it will never get finished.

Goran, I think you're intelligent enough to understand that my comparison has nothing to do with the way you've framed it. Taken in your light, EVERY computer program could and should be considered unfinished if there is a single scrap of code which could be improved upon or added to.

When Microsoft released a simulator, that was essentially "it". Aside from the occasional bugfix or performance patch, there were generally no updates of any significance to the content or features in the game - especially nothing which would be considered a core feature. You had a known quantity to purchase.

Contrast this with Laminar Research, who take a different approach. In addition to their bugfixes and performance improvements, they also attempt to release content and features which at the time of initial release may have been non-existent, incomplete, or otherwise non-functional, only declaring the product "complete" when they move on to developing their next generation. Some of this content is considered by many to be quite important material, and the absence gives the simulation a significant feeling of incompleteness even 6 months after its initial release.

Laminar acknowledges these shortcomings but gives no indications as to if or when these issues will be addressed, so existing customers and potential customers alike are left hanging. Some might declare this a superior method of product development under the guise that the product is always growing, but I see that as a overly sympathetic justification for the practice.

The build-it-as-you-go method is not what is traditionally seen in software entertainment industry and is/will be a major culture shock for those who buy X-Plane expecting it to be a traditionally complete package only to find many commonly found features missing or incomplete with vague indications of repairs somewhere down the product lifespan. It generated a lot of consternation in November 2011 with XP10's release, and it continues to generate thread after thread both here and on other X-Plane oriented sites about the status of development, missing features, and the overall state of affairs.

However true it might be, there is a degree of absurdity when X-Plane users suggest people should purchase v9 if they want a finished product and steer clear of v10 if they don't want a work in progress, when v10 is advertised as being "The most advanced flight simulator in the world.", and "...the world’s most comprehensive and powerful flight simulator for personal computers..."

I don't mind talking about it over and over because I think it is very important that people see this difference and understand what it might mean for them. There are no guarantees whatsoever that what you want to see improve with XP10 might ever actually come to pass even though development continues. At least with the MSFS series, you knew that what you bought was "the package". There was no confusion as to what might come down the road, no waiting for important features to be added, and no disappointment after months and months of waiting after your purchase for a feature which never got added in. People could make their purchasing and use decisions based on a more concrete set of circumstances.

FSX is complete and it is finished. There will be nothing added by Microsoft, nothing fixed. FSX is what it is, warts and all.

I suppose that's one way to define "finished product".
