June 17, 201213 yr All of the hundreds of dollars should have been included in the first place. I would love if they came out with a game that included all of the must have addons in the full project. >___< But ill admit. it is an amazing simulator and hobby. The most expensive hobby. And The best in many many ways. Jerad Burns

June 17, 201213 yr Author If you have any addons or hardware it can be expensive. Each Airport is $40. GSX $40 planes are outrageously over $80 but are worth it. Sound addons, camera addons, atc addons, area addons... etc.. plus yokes and throttles and that kind of stuff can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars for some. so yeah its quite a pricey hobby lol. but i mean if you are just playing default fsx its not expensive. If you have thousands of dollars to spend (which I dont) then its not expensive to you i suppose. Im not a millionaire here lol. It adds up. Jerad Burns
June 17, 201213 yr Moderator This is NOT an expensive hobby! +1 Getting your PPL, owning or renting an aircraft, and flying for real is a much more expensive hobby then simming is. Unless of course your one of those guys who spends $80,000 plus dollars to build a full scale mockup airliner sim. Or you could try motor sports as a hobby like racing cars or motorcycles, thats way more expensive than simming. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 17, 201213 yr You could also spend millions building your own space ship in your garage. The existence of more expensive hobbies does not make this one inexpensive. :)
June 17, 201213 yr Commercial Member I would love if they came out with a game that included all of the must have addons in the full project. And how long has it taken developers to make the hundreds of add-ons? It would be wonderful to have the entire world in minute detail, but someone has to make it, and indirectly you would be paying Microsoft to employ them to do it. The other consideration ... 6 years on ... it would still be in beta testing.
June 17, 201213 yr All hobbies are as we choose to make them. Be it with a small financial outlay or a large financial outlay. The choice...yes, it is down to personal choice...is with the individual who participates in "the hobby"; whatever it may be. Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
June 17, 201213 yr For a long time FS has been designed for mods. There is a selection of default aircraft, airports, landmarks, and photoscenery to give you ideas how to do it, then the sdk to give you the tools. scott s. .
June 17, 201213 yr Commercial Member This is a drop in the bucket. Try going down to your local airport and renting a cessna for a few hours. Even splitting it in half with someone will probably cost you as much as you spent on addons and stuff the past 6 years for this "simulator". :-) Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
June 17, 201213 yr My other hobbies (Golf, Model Railroading, Shooting), on a, cost-per-hour-of-enjoyment, basis, make flight-simming look nearly free. And I have thousands invested in hardware/add-ons..
June 17, 201213 yr I have a few other "hobbies" that cost more that FSimming!! Flying - $100+ per hour Golf - $50-$200 a pop depending how much I drink.... Boating - $20-$200+ depending on how far I go and how much I drink... Camping - $50+ depending on where I go and how much I drink... OK OK...it seems like my hobby is drinking :LMAO: Seriously, though, Flight Simming is cheap as a hobby! Devin CYOW
June 17, 201213 yr I suspect, for most people, ‘hard core simmers’ aside – FSX is just another electronic game. And from that perspective of electronic gaming – it is indeed expensive. Most games – you install it and you’re done from further purchases to continue enjoy the game. One should not compare the cost of actual flying lessons as a baseline for how expensive FSX is or is not. The relevant comparison for an average person is other games (Quake, NFS, Simcity, Civilization etc) not the cost of renting Plane X at Airport Y or other different hobbies (I spend a lot on Motorcycles). Also spending thousands of dollars in hardware just to make it run smoothly again counts as significant additional costs. Not everyone can afford top of the line hardware to play a game released a few years back. Most games run decently on average hardware. Not FSX. That said I agree, compared to the enjoyment and the hours one can spend on this, it is well worth it if it’s your thing. But at the same time the view that it is a relatively expensive game is legitimate. Cheers

And The best in many many ways. I dont know... I like it when I buy a new addon and get to see what it adds to the sim. If I bought FSX fully loaded with all the must haves already there it would take some of the fun out of it. I wont comment on the expensive hobby thing as it is pointless IMO. What is expensive to one may not be to another and I hope it always will stay that way but certain US politicians are sure trying like hell to change that. Jim Wenham
June 17, 201213 yr I used to do a lot of Bass fishing. This is far, far cheaper. It all depends which way you look at it. Yes, one addon aircraft may cost as much as two other entire games, but the amount of development that went into those addon aircraft is probably twice what went into the other full games so fair is fair. If you compare this to "gaming" then maybe it's expensive, but compare it to many of the other hobbies out there and it's damn cheap. Golf anyone?
June 17, 201213 yr "You could also spend millions building your own space ship in your garage. The existence of more expensive hobbies does not make this one inexpensive. :)" lol, I love the logic. Good one...
