June 28, 201213 yr Moderator Well FSX is not perfect either. I cant even remember if there was any sort of icing effects on the default planes. While there is no "visual" icing effect, there most certainly is a weight accumulation of ice on the aircraft, as well as carb icing and pitot icing. There are also commands for pitot heat, carb heat, and surface de-ice... Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
June 28, 201213 yr Iliamna is DME only... Did that part work at least? Nope. Distance nm showed, but no tone signal.
June 28, 201213 yr I flew Mt. McKinley last night. The mountains look pretty bland from a distance, but you can see them suddenly develop more detail as you approach. They're pretty good from up close. The filling in effect is a little distracting from reality. I must say that being able to change from my RV6A to the Red Tail P-51 mid flight is a nice "non-reality" feature. P-51 climbs a bit better :-)
June 28, 201213 yr Yes! I already wondered what was going wrong! For a while I was thinking I didn't get contact with the VOR because of all the mountains and greater distances, but the DME showed a distance, so that couldn't be it. I suppose this is a bug... Sometimes what appears to be a VOR is actually only a DME. There are many DMEs in Alaska. VFR Sectional Charts show a DME as having just a box around the singal site and a VOR will have a big compus circle around the box. If it does not have the big compus circle around it but otherwise looks like a VOR, its a DME. It will also say "DME" if it is only DME. MSF should model its maps on the public domain VFR Sectional maps, this would be a huge improvement.

Warmer ambient temperatures with a low dew points spread (high humidity) cause Carb icing. Alaska has neither generaly speaking. Not that you can't get carb icing up here, its just not a as common an occurrence. Brian Thibodeaux | B747-400/8, C-130 Flight Engineer, CFI, Type Rated: BE190, DC-9 (MD-80), B747-400 My Liveries

June 28, 201213 yr Hi Folks Lots of "features, capabilities, & potential" are already present in FLIGHT's core and/or updates. We'll just have to wait for MS to "unlock/activate" those mechanisms. Remember also - As per previous and current FS versions - You don't need to SEE that visual effect in-game, for it to have an AFFECT your aircraft. HTH ATB Paul ODG Preview
June 29, 201213 yr Well I had a VOR that didn't work tonight at Klawock, right neat PAKW airport, 115.8. Looking at some airport info, it seems there might not be a VOR there at all. Map must be in error. Just read, that this is probably a DME because it didn't have the compass rose around it on the map. So I looked it up and in fact it is an NDB. Two frequencies are listed for it. http://www.ourairports.com/navaids/AKW/Klawock_NDB-DME_US/

June 29, 201213 yr After flying over some not too good looking cities, I was happy to suddenly see a rather nice one! Turns out it's Anchorage.

I checked the MSF maps and they show DMEs as a small square box with a dot in the middle, VORs as a small square box with a hexigon in the middle. The NDBs are a small circle of dots in a cluster. For some reason they did not bother to use any VOR compass circles.
