One more time, Fiber_Frame_Fraction

Featured Replies

I said I wasn't going to do this again, but now I have to eat my words. Chasing the ever moving target of FPS.

So based upon what an earlier posted made note of...I removed my FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION line in fsx.cfg. Flew the same flight (KSEA..Bellevue) , same settings, same a/c from a saved flight file and it made no difference whatsoever to my performance that I could see.

So I don't know what to make of this...so its just not needed I guess.

I also have a Samsung 3D monitor that runs at 120 Hz and can't figure out what difference that might make to anything either.

KSEA to Bellevue = 16-24 FPS FRAPS reading depending upon which direction I view. If I don't keep scanning the horizon it will sit 20-22. Extremely dense scenery setting, Dense autogen, in and RC Scout doing 115 kts.

If you had FFTF set at 0.33, it would make no difference if you remove it or not, since

this is the FSX default.

The only time you would see a difference, is when you change the value.

Try 0.18 or 0.10

im using FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.18 to great effect in dx10 mode and using the internal fps limiter at 30fps

Yes, I realize that, which is why I removed it. However as I noted above I tried lower values and I see no difference in any performance except maybe more blurries by using a lower value.

I think what I want to know now is how does Vsync come into this? I tried no Vsync, 1/2 vsync, 1.4 vsync...and best result appears to be setting "use the 3d application setting".

According to NickN from Flight1 over at Simforums, FFTF does nothing and is not needed for multi core processors beyond FSX service pack 1.

Just an fyi, I reinstalled FSX completely 3 days ago, and I do not have the FFTM line in my FSX.cfg anywhere.

This was after installing FSX and then installing Acceleration (which automatically includes both SP1/SP2).

On my previous FSX installation, I had skipped Acceleration and did both SP1 and SP2 separately and I STILL didn't have the FFTF line in my FSX.cfg.

As far as I can tell, this is a line that has to be manually added, and I'm guessing that SP2 or Acceleration both delete it from the FSX.cfg as it's not needed post SP1.

That was written in 2009. Since then hardware, drivers, and Nvidia Inspector have changed the look and feel of FSX. That includes the use of tweaks.

I use 0.15 and it's simply perfect for me!

I guess that's it then, my computer is three years old, so is it's hardware, software, and drivers.

People running the lower values than default.... are you running higher LOD than normal? I run 6.5 and I'm guessing a lower value here would almost negate the LOD increase, because it would be more blurry on the fly.

I am at LOD 6.5 and FFTF at 0.15 and don't really notice any blurriness in the textures.

Where in FSX.cfg exactly do you put this? I just checked mine and I don't have one :P

Edit: Oh, found it. Under [MAIN]

Place it under the Main entry:

isnt setting the LOD higher than 6.5 asking for CTD's? I thought i read that somewhere

Setting it higher than default can cause OOM's, it just depends on the scenery/aircraft... I use many different saved .cfg's - some with 5.5 LOD, others with more AI/less AI etc etc... I just load them to use in different flying situations.

edit: Anyway I tried the FFTF= 0.15

It was a little smoother but only at large hogging resource scenery areas, the tradeoff was blurry textures at speeds in excess of 250 kts. It's a wash for me. I'm going to stick with no entry.

well just to test i set LOD at 5.5 and FFTF at .15 and it seems to be running smoother. one nice thing about having a larger LOD is seeing a long string of car headlights on a road as youre on final to an airport..kinda makes everything even more realistic

That was my experience as well. Textures got way too muddy.
