Best Carenado Aircraft (for FSX)

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. What do you think the best Carenado aircraft for FSX are? I am looking for possible buys for the holidays. It needs to have good flight dynamics, be easy on fps, and have a decent exterior. I'd also prefer one with Carenado's suped up GPS, not the direct port of the default GPS500. Thanks!

I'll stay away from providing an opinion on that question - too many good aircraft to choose from. Plus, I'm not a real world pilot, so I don't have that experience to compare the sim aircraft to.

I replied to let you know that Carenado has held a very good sale for the last two Holiday seasons that I've been involved in simming. It usually begins in mid-December and ends right around Christmas. I may be wrong, but I don't think it continues through the Holidays until New Years.

Virtually all of their aircraft (except their newest products) are priced signifcantly lower - usually from 35%- 50% off the regular price. I purchased 6 aircraft during last year's sale; three cost (US Dollars) $11 each and three more cost $15.

Just FYI - I thought you would want to know about it since you mentioned purchasing around the Holidays. I apologize if you knew of it already.

Cheers,

Mark

There are a number of nice Carenado aircraft to choose from...

C337, Bonanza, C182Q are some of my favorites..

If you are looking for a really good GPS, you really need to look at

adding an RXP GNS, however.

Personally, my favorite of the Carendo planes remains the C185F, especially the bush plane variants. If you want more modern avionics, the Cessna 210 and A36 are really decent. Their new T182 is wonderful with its skins and glass cockpit, but it's pretty heavy on the frame rate. Their Grand Caravan C208 is one of the best planes ever built for FSX.

No didn't know that. Thanks you! Looks like I will be able to stretch the $ even further.

Syd, I will be getting the 185 bush and I already have the 210 and A36. I'll check out the Caravan. Hopefully, with a new rig soon, I will be able to buy the 182, because it looks really snazzy.

As you probably know (but in case you don't) they have three Skylane packages - the new G1000, the Standard and Long Range package, and the Skylane RGII package. I purchased the Standard/Long Range Skylane package and the C182RGII last Christmas. Each sold for $11.00 (US Dollars) if my memory is correct. That is an incredible price for Carenado aircraft. They're only $19.95 now.

One thing to keep in mind - the older C182 panel is easily modified. I installed the Reality XP Garmin GPS receivers and the Unlimited Pack into all of the Skylane variant except the G1000. That includes the 430 and 530 GPS receivers plus the Wide Area Augmentation System that is so popular these days. If you aren't familiar with WAAS, it allows you to fly the new GPS precision approaches. In some cases you can call have an "ILS at a dirt strip". It's a great system.

Finally, the blank texture doesn't need to be assembled into a paint kit. The fuselage is already assembled.

I don't mean to boast or try to show off by talking about all of this - I'm just letting you know that the older Skylanes can accept a lot of add-on avionic packages if you are concerned about the frame rate problems with the G1000 model. My "old" Skylanes with the RXP equipment actually has more capability than the new G1000 system does.

Please let me know if you want more info on this subject. I guess I could have said the older Skylanes are very capable and left it at that... Sorry for being long-winded... I just love talking about planes.

I totally support the C182 cockpit versatility statement!

If you are into retro-fitting antique cockpits, this one is a great target.

See below, a modified C182Q cockpit, based on a real world aircraft.

Nice panel Bert! Where did you get that digital RPM gauge?

I bought the new T182 and installed it. I flew it one time and said, "This will be a really great plane on my next computer." LOL I'm in the process of shopping for the new box, but until then, the old Q6600 just doesn't want to deal with the T182. Adding to what a previous poster said, the older C182Q is a very nice plane that I have many pleasurable hours in. It is one of their older models, and still has one foot in the FS9 world, but I like it a lot.

Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.

JetProp. B58, King Air... In that order.

Don't have the high winger... they are too slow for me, regardless of the wiz bang panels.

BUT, no doubt its part of the development for the next two super planes Carenado is working on... Cirrus SR22GTX, and the Mega Bomb, TBM 850.

Nice panel Bert! Where did you get that digital RPM gauge?

I built it from scratch, using a photo from the real airplane for the bitmap.

How is the 208 on the fps? I've heard mixed reviews, but the default is really bad systems wise, so I would like an upgrade.

The 337 remains my favorite airplane, and the first one I've passed the 100 hour mark in. Excellent flight model, superbly done VC, great visibility, excellent sound set and an overall great platform for practicing IFR with everything well laid out and easy to see without a bunch of zooming, or popups or whatever. Uniquely funky too.

The Jetprop still hangs in there for me as well. It's a fun change of pace plane, and with it's mix of analog the only glass panel plane I enjoy flying almost in spite of the glass.

After that, probably the V35B (with the "optional" Bernt Stolle FDE), because, well, it's a V-tail Bonanza - I'll go on week-long binges where I fly duplicate flights in the V35B and then Milviz' B55 Baron, wallowing in the Beechness of it all.

And then the C90B because, well, it's a King Air. :-)

I use RXP's GPS's in all of these, making them that much better.

Your mileage will vary, of course, depending on what you like to fly.

Scott

This is where most people will give you different opinions as different people like to fly different aircraft. I personally love the Baron 58 (make sure you read the GPS manual, it has important info on how to get the moving map working), the Piper Malibu Jetprop (difficult to master as it overspeeds very fast and while a light aircraft it "feels" heavy), and the King Air C90B (very hard on the framerates but a joy to fly). I will be Buying their Cirrus SR22, Socata TBm850, Super King Air B200, and the Milviz Super King Air 350i.
