Lights - The Achilles' heel of DX10

Featured Replies

Using ADE to investigate the airports without lights as showing on my "clean install" system, it would appear that some of the original "stock" airports do not always have lights "coded" for a particular runway. Not sure why when the prototypical airport has them. Anyway, making a small change using ADE and then revisiting the Airport "fixes" the issue. Just thought I would mention this as it supports Paul's findings and airport design. As regards payware, I thought I read somewhere that making 3d objects "work" as runway lights is an issue for some reason. See if I can find the post. Regards Stuart

I was testing light in DX10 a long time ago, here is a vid with Orbx scenery in DX10, the stutterings are caused by me having the FPS set to unlimited as I was also testing for something else.

I got no flickering lights in this vid. as I think the problems (with flickering lights) is caused by the airplane lights, what I mean is if I try the same flight with another plane I will sometime get flickering lights....beats me....

I got some wind gust at the end....not a pretty landing...

PS: Bloom enable...and the chick in the back seat is scary.....phew

Alain!! Where did you get her from???

How did you get the aircraft lights working in DX10 mode, Alain?

Hey! the good news is....she got a sister...

How did you get the aircraft lights working in DX10 mode, Alain?

What do you mean? Aircraft lights always worked for me in DX10.

Edit: My lights maybe working because I make sure I buy my addons DX10 compatible from the 3PD?

Here is another vid. (a long one), the lights are working great, with bloom enable I don't like the other planes lights under the covered sky flying around the airport, it may be because of the fog with bloom enable since it was early in the morning...again, the sutterings are caused by me having the FPS at unlimited for testing purposes.

My lights work too. The only problem so far has been the middle runway and taxiway lights on FSDT KORD (grey blocks).

@Alain - great video as usual Alain. Not sure if I like the bloom feature turned on though. Your panel text was a bit blurry and I think that's due to bloom or many a low resolution.

Best regards,

Jim

I'm am going to say that to fix the DX10 aircraft lights and airport lights issue I've found that A2A 3D lights redux has fixed that problem for me.

Low framerates and stutters aren't too much of a problem for me in DX9 mode, but the OOM errors are ridiculous. That's why I am extremely interested in DX10 mode. Mind you, I have managed to get FSX to CTD even in this mode a couple of times (flying close to London with VFR London X, UK2000 Heathrow Xtreme/Gatwick Xtreme/London City Xtreme, and a bunch of other addons active), so it isn't immune

Last night I did my first DX10 flight and I loved it!! Excellent framerates, no stutters or microstutters, no spikes, very stable, sooo real textures, with all addons used and sliders at almost max! The issues I have are these described above about grey runways and taxiways at dawn and dusk and not so good filters. I'm a day flyer but I love to takeoff at dawn and land at dusk  FSX community and all addon companies MUST learn about this great improvement made by Steve, leave behind DX9 for ever and make DX10 updates of all their products :Praying: because a new era for FSX begins! Red is better than CAPS huh?

Question ... we are experimenting with DX-10 at Return to Misty Moorings. I put in the new shader and was amazed that I got most of my "night" textures back on buildings, etc that had "gone white".  Also, I got textures back on my AI aircraft that I had not seen before. But two things happened ... the little red/white and green/white buoys we use for navigation in the rivers turned all blue (the lights on them still flash red and green fine), and the "general waterfall" object we use (an animation) turns into a blue square.  I was wondering if there was a tweak inside the new folder somewhere that might correct these?  I'm not expecting DX-10 to be perfect, but you folks seem to be coming up with solutions that just keep making it better ... thought I'd give it a try and ask.  Thank you. (Doug) PS- The results of the shader are amazing!

i love the performance in DX10 and the potiential for future scenerys. Try FSDT KLAX,CYVR,KJFK or EKCH by Scansim at night and you are sold.

Aerosoft scenerys has problems at night. UK2000 works mostly. But the performance, the smoothness and not having OOM any more is totally worth the switch to DX10.
