Looking for a 727

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a recommendations for a good (nice visuals and good FDE) 727. I'm downloading the Thomas Ruth 727 but I wonder if the payware Captain Sim 727 is worth the investment. I read the AVSIM review of the CS727 and it seems to have some challenges.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The visuals on the Capt Sim 727 are brilliant, especially inside the cockpit. But for me the biggest bugbear is the fact the whatever heading/course you set on the Captains HSI, the same course and heading are on the F.O's HSI. As the aircraft navigates by point to point VOR's and NDBs, I really would like to set the FO's HSI independently to give me some help with intersections (the RMI's are really too small for the job).

Yep, I'm sure you could add some RNAV capability, but that takes away from the authenticity of the era it mostly flew in.

How it ever got released like that I don't know, and why it hasn't been fixed by now is another mystery.

There are other glitches in functionality, but affect the purists more, I don't need every system/switch to be fully functional, if you do, take a look at the captain sim forum to check them out.

But otherwise a lovely airplane, frame rate friendly, nice to fly, pretty simple, shame they fell down (for me at least) on such an important detail.

Like Eugene said, Except for few glitches like he mentioned, the CS727 is awesome. I love it.

If you can get the CS 727 when the sales (9.99 Euros for the base pack) are running, it's like stealing. But the guys have mentioned that you will have to face some need for user made fixes and, maybe, even persistent downsides like the coupled instruments (Capt./FO).

Other than that, she still is a very nice plane. If you are into the classic airliners, perhaps take a look at the 707 'instead'. She's more current on the optics but doesn't make a good plane for short runways. The 737 then sums up the best of both worlds, current optics and a plane being able to go in and out of smaller airports.

The 727 and 707 are (IMO) CSs best planes. The only issue I have (and it could well be driver error), is the electrics stable from cold & dark. However, as another airliner maker points out - pilots don't generally get an a/c in a c&d state anyway. I use it a lot. If you're patient enough to wait for a sale, it's definitely worth it.

I've owned the Captain Sim 727 for a while now and it's still one of my favorite classic jets to fly in FSX. There are a few glitches but one expects a few in an old airplane. There are user-developed fixes for most of them if you check out the 727 Captain forums carefully.

You can fly it using classic radio nav or it's easy to upgrade it to some form of RNAV by adding a NAV/GPS switch and a GPS. The VOR/NAV setting on the AP will follow the GPS if it's switched that way. There are some 727s still flying cargo in 2012 and some of them are RNAV capable so that's not such a wrong thing to do.

I can't say exactly why the CS727 is a favorite. It's a lot of work trying to fill the shoes of a three-man crew. But flying it feels authentic to me -- and there's a retired 727 Captain on the forums that agrees the airplane feels right and most of its systems are accurately simulated. But beyond that something just makes it fun to fly it. I can say that only for about 3 or 4 other airplanes of all I've tried.

Alrighty, hopefully the next sale will be soon but if Carenado releases the TBM850 first, well...... B)

There are some 727s still flying cargo in 2012

That's exactly why I'm looking for one to fly with Fed Ex Virtual Cargo.

The 727 from Captain Shlt is probably the most unrealistic plane I ever flown, but if eye candy is what you are looking for maybe it will work for you.

Such language. You might not like Capt Sim but calling them that is pretty bad. I'm surprised your comment hasn't been deleted already.

EDIT: Looks like it already was but my Andriod wont let me edit my reply. Sorry for that. Went to reply then put my phone down for a while, while the quote was still on my screen. Apologies to the mods.

Get the CS you will love it....

If you do buy it you will spend some time adjusting it. There are topics in their forums for adding a better FDE and fixing some bugs. One problem that can't be fixed by anyone but CS is that winglets on the cargo 727-200 do not show at all.

I think it is one of their best airplanes and wish they would stop pretending they are capable of advanced systems on modern airliners and stick to the classics. A DC-8 would be nice

This freeware doesn't look bad at all in comparison to the CS:

I've been playing around with the Thomas Ruth freeware 727 and its quite an interesting bird. The outside textures look very close to the CS727 but the CS 727 definitely has a better VC. Flying it has me wondering though how exactly did pilots fly a SID and STAR with plane of this era? Was it always radar vectors or some other navigation tools?

I'm not sure if this will get mod-ed out of here... but Alrot Designs has a very nice freeware 727 at simviation.com that is worth checking out. I've also got the CS 727 and I love flying it at times when I'm not in the mood for all of the procedures required to fly something like the NGX.

Cheers!

Yeah their classic birds always seem to be way better than modern ones. Proper classic 747 would be nice too...

Agreed. the RFP 747 was the best addon for FS9 but rumors of a new update for FSX have never come true, sadly.

CS would do a great 747 series. The 100 200 300, 200 SUD, and freighter variants of all.
