Bufferpools confusion

Featured Replies

Getting confused which settings to use

Nvidia 680GTX 4Gig video card

3770 overclocked to 4.5

16GIG Ram

SSD

I have tried Bufferpools=0 and =1 both give me graphic spikes

I have tried

UsePools=8388608 with RejectThreshold=262144 which seems to help a bit, but what figure should I use here? On other posts I have seen

UsePools=8500000000 which is a much higer number

Any help appreciated, I thought a powerful pc would solve all my problems!

Cheers all

Are you sure that Bufferpools=0 will work?

From reading other posts (notably Word Not Allowed's Guide), it appears that you should be using either Poolsize=0 or Usepools=0, and the name Bufferpools only refers to one of the two above tweaks. (If you haven't already read it, most people suggest reading Word Not Allowed's Guide.)

Make sure that you are setting water to High or above in order to prevent graphics errors.

UsePools is a switch, its on or off ie UsePools=1 or Usepools =0

if on then poolsize=amount (say 8000000) but do a bit of research to get the correct size

It's not good idea to use pools and RejectThreshold together.

[bUFFERPOOLS]

Poolsize=0

Works excellent for me

Zeljko Budovic

Usepools is used to use or not use bufferpools (and therefore rejectthreshold); 0 = off, 1 = on.

So to see any difference you would want usepools=1

Leave a setting for poolsize completely alone - its not needed when using rejectthreshold as only anything above this value is sent straight to your GPU. This basically means anything below that value gets sent to the pool, giving your bus a break. Poolsize=0 would send all data directly to the GPU. It is rejectthreshold that makes the difference between seeing those jaggedy spikes or not as its an indication your GPU bus is being overwhelmed - hence the artifacts.

Start down low and work your way up until you find a size that removes them - everyone's rig is different so different settings for different people. A good starting ground is:

96kb = 98304 (anything lower is equivalent to not using it)

128kb = 131072

256kb = 262144

512kb = 524288

Eg. Rejectthreshold=262144

You can then use any number in between these - so find the highest level that removes them then work back down - try 32 kb size chunks to make it easy.

Good luck in finding something that works best for you.

Hi. no

PoolSize=0 and water High still

gives me the spikes quite a bit , but I have found

UsePools=8388608 with RejectThreshold=262144

has reduced them quite a lot, but still get the odd one. Have read the guide, but still struggling to get rid of them. If somoene made a utility that sorted fsx they would make a fortune !

Try:

UsePools=1

RejectThreshold=262144

and work from there.

As stated before, UsePools should only ever = 1 or 0 (on or off) and no other figure should be there.

If you're still getting spikes, try lowering your water setting down a notch or 2 from High.

Steve

And once the spikes are gone try a long flight and see if FSX gets an OOM... That made me abandon the tweak. Everyones rig is different, so this is a game of hit and miss.

Seem to remeber that the FSX default poolsize was 4MB, but does anyone know the default reject thershold?

Ok thanks I think I understand

will have another go in next few days with the reject thresholdsetting 263144 or higher setting

I know that 263144 gives me a few spikes now and again so will try higher setting

Also sorry should have said running on 3 monitors not sure if that makes a difference

// Your 'original' fsx.CFG file was backed up at http://www.venetubo..../fsx_backup.cfg

// This file is optimized as follows: 8 core(s), CPU speed 5, HT 0, GPU 4, PREF 2

// You can visit Bojote's FSX Tweaking & Tuning service at http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

[bufferPools]

RejectThreshold=131072

This what the tool gave me Mr Word Not Allowed does this look right on gtx680 thanks buddy. This is also exact order without listing all of the other lines fyi

Here is the BP settings:

[bufferPools]

UsePools=1

PoolSize=8388608 //4MB Default 4194304

RejectThreshold=524288 //262144, 126976, 98304

They work best on ATI cards. Your 680 should be setup using Word Not Allowed's Guide. Locking the frames to 30 should stop the spikes and stutters.

Thank you all very much for your help. Word Not Allowed I re read your guide, much more detailed than the one I read before I , must of been using an old link.!

changing to RejectThreshold=524288 seems to have done the job (but only had a quick 10 minute test before going to work!) will feedback the long term testing., with Rex Overdrive running as well.

Once again all thank you for your speedy help

I think it would be more fair to the average "Word Not Allowed Tweak Guide" user, if Mr. Word Not Allowed mentioned that the FSX rig he uses himself does not have either AI, GA, or other traffic enabled, he fly Vatsim only.

Many users will be confused by that, cause they will get lesser performance than him, as average users, with AI, GA, traffic etc. enabled.

Bojote did the same, and people didn´t understand the lesser performance they got, compared to Bojotes.

Also - without meaning to bash Word Not Allowed for his sterling work, I would also add that his guide is heavy assumptive to the use of nVidia cards, and with an ATI card and his recommended settings, I did not get good performance. (I got a lot better performance with my ATI setup up, using Bojote's settings)........ however in the past, with an nVidia card, Word Not Allowed's guide was unbeatable.

Again no bash at Word Not Allowed's great work, but just to point out that one man's settings will never work for every single user's different configurations and equipment.

Saying it gives you spikes without giving more info is futile.

Either post your fsx.cfg, or screenshots of your fsx display settings, and mention if you are using anything else beside naked fsx (like fps limiters, heavy scenery, high resolution clouds etc...).

In that guide there is basically everything you need to make FSX perform well.

Oh with that I agree! But... I can tell you I finished many 8hrs+ flights on this rig and I didn't have OOM for a long long time. All you need is a balance.

And there is no default RT... this is what Bojote has came up with.

Word Not Allowed,

I originally tweak my FSX.cfg with Ventubo and then added your tweaks to the file. Seem to get good result i.e. better than pure ventubo.

Are you suggestiing that I should only use your tweaks from a clean .cfg config ? Did you try it out ?

Kind Regards

Fulcrum

You have all that

@Word Not Allowed: I surely do not hope you work as an instructor or teacher, god forbid, cause your temper and arrogance will surely get in the way of helping people!

Why do you post this tweakguide of yours?

To help, or to show off your EGO???

Why not post at the top of your guide:

1. PLS BE AWARE THAT I DONT USE AI TRAFFIC OR CARS OR BOATS, SO YOU WILL LIKELY HAVE OTHER RESULTS THAN ME

2. PLS BE AWARE THAT THIS GUIDE IS FOR NVIDIA GPU´S ONLY

Hope this helps some people, and maybe, just maybe The Word Not Allowed himself, but I doubt it...

All that is written in guide, all you need is to read.

I tried all posible guides and tweaks in fsx, and after Word Not Allowed tweaks, it's for the first time when i have excellent performance and fluid FSX. No need to insult the man who wrote this guide for us. Just read carefully, apply, and if you don't like it - go for something else!
