Wow! .... blown away by MSE Delaware!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have found myself quite drawn and interested in MegaScenery Earth lately...... But I was cautious at the same time; my last photoreal scenery was the UK stuff, from Horizon GenX .... not bad at all, but if I were to buy into more photoscenery (and of the US), I would want it to be a little better; or to have moved on in some ways.

I was also nervous because of the absence of any autogen. I am not an autogen freak, and even in normal areas in FSX, only have it set at 'Normal' (sometimes even sparse, when in heavier planes).

And then there was the fact that there never seem to be that many screenshots from MSE 2.0 (or maybe I'm just not looking in the right place!).

Anyway, today I decided to try the stuff out, so I invested a paltry $9.95 and bought MegaScenery Earth Delaware state.

.......... and that's right where the WOW comes in!!...... I am blown away at how good this looks. With the recommended settings, and increase in LOD to 7.5, it is an absolutely visual feast. It even looks good down to 900 feet (and anything below that, I'd expect to be looking at my aircraft instruments, not the scenery  ..... it looked best at 3,500 in my view.

Anyway, here are two screenshots I took on my inaugural MSE Delaware flight, from KGED to KILG.

I hope it's ok to post these screenies here. The crux of my post is to say how fantastic I have found MSE, after some trepidation to buy, rather than just screenshots. But if not, feel free to move them.

......just as others have said, the scenery still looks and feels very three-dimensional, like it's popping out at you. The lack of autogen is a non event, especially if you are flying to/from airports with a fair amount of buildings. ............ and performance is stellar! .... better than default; can't say better than that.

The best thing that I can say about this scenery however is that in 15 years of this hobby, I have never flown over any scenery that gave me such as sensation of height.... of actually being up in the air.

I can say that this is the way forward for me now - I expect to be getting a lot more MSE states.

Are you not experiencing memory insufficiency issues?

I love the variety of ground textures and how the horizon blends smoothly into the distant smog. Were any special weather add-ons or settings used for these images? Do your horizons normally look this realistic?

Hi Owen,

I flew for 40 minutes and never experienced any issues, memory related or otherwise. I am running an i7 2600k, with 8GB DDR3 RAM, Win 7 64bit, and a modest HD 5770 1GB card.

In the above pics, I have OpusFSX running, doing it's wonderful real world weather magic. However I use no addon textures (Rex etc), so those are default clouds, skies etc, just the weather depiction is enhanced, via Opus.

I am a bit of a autogen guy. I am big on the Orbx stuff. I do have some photoscenery though but it has autogen. Hi, would you mind posting a couple of screenies from say 1000' - 2000' AGL. Most photo scenery looks good at elevation but what about low and slow.

I'm "off sim" now Bryan  .... and being told an assertive wife that my flight sim time today has long overrun! [EDIT: See a couple posts down, I just posted a screenie at 935' AGL] As I said in the OP, the scenery looked really great down to 900' ..... lower than that and yes there is some loss of definition as you'd expect. But in the past, I've flown photo scenery where you would deliberately avoid looking out of the window anywhere below 2000' .......... with this, it really looks very very good down to 900', although I would say that the lack of autogen becomes a little bit noticeable below 1500agl. Above that, it just was not a factor.

Happy days! ....... I can't wait until the whole US is completed, because doing a coast to coast tour over this scenery, will be a very special and enjoyable undertaking. B)

Kind of off topic but I wanted to respond to the OP's sensation of height. I recently placed my 47 inch led HDTV on my desk and tried out FSX. I didnt feel like it was too big that close. Like the OP, the sensation of height was amazing. I felt like I was in the cockpit looking down over the wing to the ground 8000 feet below. I will definitely try to get a larger screen for the pc. Maybe a 37 or 42".

...... bear in mind that Delaware is a pretty flat state in this area! .......areas with more terrain may look better at low altitudes.

It's probably not for everyone, but I think it's fantastic, and you're actually rarely that low for very long.

Cheers.

Hi there,

You know what, you are actually seeing default scenery there still. You have to manually add the MSE 2.0 Delaware scenery to the scenery library for it to show. Check the instructions provided with your download file. You are not actually seeing the Delaware scenery!

Here are some screenies I took from MSE 2.0 New Hampshire, Vermont and Maryland. These are using the recommended graphics settings and tweaking guide. All are straight from the sim with no post-editing, apart to add the titles and MSE logo etc... The lowest shot in the set (the one highlighting the 3D effect) was shot at around 1150 ft AGL off memory... Tweaking your graphics settings is the key to get the scenery looking really good.

The shots can be downloaded here: http://www.pcaviator.com.au/images/MSE2Screens.zip

I was about to point it out but Dean beat me to it. Yea that is definitely still default scenery!

Wait till he finds out he wasted 10 bucks to find out that all he needed to do was increase his LOD! Now he can add back in his auto-gen and also all the seasonal textures!

Lol, talk about placebo effect.

This has got to be one of the all time funniest threads i've read where someone was so happy about what they already had and didnt even realize it.

He actually now maybe disappointed when he actually gets MSE working.

I still cant believe he couldnt tell the difference between stock/GEX and what phoro scenery looks like. To me there is no mistaking the difference.

it shows how well tweaks can work! If you're FSX.cfg was out of whack this is totally understandable as it can make a big difference.

I believe the installer will add fiber frame fraction and maybe LOD. I have their Hawaiian scenery.

Yep! I was just gonna say this... it's like GEX or something.
