February 4, 201313 yr Autogen turn it off, traffic 15% and ga traffic 15%. Bloom and shadows off. High poly objects avoid like the plague.
February 4, 201313 yr 1. Probably disbale light bloom and ground shaddows at first. 2. Reduce traffic, especially if you use an addon for that. 3. Reduce autogen and general scenery settings. 4. Don't use hi-res textures. 5. Avoid weather settings with many clouds and precipitation. Florian

February 4, 201313 yr Commercial Member Summer1 - i don't agree. Got a worse PC-base (2600k at 4.2GHz with GTX560Ti, WIn7 Index 7.8) - no problem running FSX smooth with the NGX, 100% AI (WoAI complete) at FSDT KLAX with HD WX graphics from Active Sky 2012 and ground environment X. SInce i upgraded my PC like a year ago - i am very happy with FSX. Even my most demanding add-on, my Maddog is finally a joy to fly. February 4, 201313 yr That I'd like to see live and up close. Don't forget: smoothness is in the eye of the beholder. ^_^ He didn't post any numbers like fps. What's smooth for him might be unacceptable for you. Performance remains a subject which is very hard to objectively discuss about on a forum.
February 4, 201313 yr How can I monitor the 4 gig limit? Thanks for the responses. Great community here on Avsim! You can use FSUIPC. There was a recent thread here in these forums where Peter Dowson (the creator of FSUIPC) explained how to do it. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
February 4, 201313 yr Sorry Summer, it is the computer. FSX uses the processor to handle it's graphics. The faster the processor the better the graphics. Taking it into comparison, and i5-2500K, vs a Intel Core 2 Duo, of coarse you are correct. But an i5-2500k, and and i7-3930K won't make a difference. To tell you the truth I don't think a faster processor of the future will make FSX run any faster than it does today. I run with most of my sliders maxed out and I manage to hold 29 to 30 FPS except over big cities with their buildings like Seattle. I run an i7-290 overclocked to 3.2 Ghz and everything runs well with very little stuttering. I really do not care about FPS as much as I do about smoothness With the NGX, with weather, and traffic at 100%, at THE GATE, at Flightbeam KPHX with max settings and 30 fps? BULL. Simply not true. Back to the original subject --- Weather and cloud detail have a heavy hit along with heavy traffic. Each machine is different and it requires a balance of what you want to see and what you are willing to give up. Move the sliders one at a time, test, and then go on to the next adjustment until you max out what your machine can handle. After you get it running right you will then load a new airplane with a high poly count and everything will go to crap again. And that's exactly what happens when you MAX everything out of what your computer can handle. I don't know about you, but I sure would much rather spend my time flying rather than spend my time Adjusting sliders to figure out the absolute max your computer can *handle*. Besides the CTD's you are getting, you probably are getting very LOW fps at complex addon airports. You say you get 30 fps *flying over* seattle with max settings, well of coarse, anyone can. I get 60! When you load it at the *gate* is when you are really talkin.
February 4, 201313 yr As above i didn't notice a significant difference on overclocking my 980x from 3.3 to 4, it doesn't like to go higher than 4. I did de-lid the previous one and ran for a while at 4.5, unfortunately that one...well...it stopped working. GFX card overclocking makes no difference what-so-ever. In terms of OOM, it appears to be the Level of Detail radius setting. Using the NGX i cannot run this at max without hitting OOM near add on airports. Boats have no noticable impact on performance that i have seen. Ian R Tyldesley
February 5, 201313 yr If you use UTX and FTX, road traffic will cause stutters. I simply turned it off, if you don't I would still turn it off. Autogen, AI Traffics, Light Bloom. Most of the visual annoyances: stutters, shimmers happen around airports at take off and landing, once you are up in the air it's not so bad, but if you don't give enough room in process memory space as the flight progress you will run out of memory. There is nothing I hate more than having a slight pauses (stutters) as you do the take off roll. Your FPS may be more than 30FPS and it still stutters. Processor wise we are at a good enough point with the i7 series. OOM and CTD is now something you need to watch out for and they are caused mainly by pushing slider up to high. You can use DX10 with Steve Parsons fixes but many airports do not work and night lighting and textures are still much to be desired. It is totally depends on what you want, you just can't have everything. Vu Pham i7-13700K 5.2 GHz OC, 64 GB RAM, RTX5090, SSD for Sim, SSD for system. MSFS2020, XP-12, DCS
February 5, 201313 yr I ate a bunch of sliders for supper. The one with the most impact was the last one I ate! Mike Mann
February 5, 201313 yr Why do people insist they can run FSX with an alphabet soup worth of addons at max settings?! Autogen Cars Don't load up on HD textures!
February 5, 201313 yr Well, wouldn't you want a car full of all bells and whistles, including wide tires, good acceleration, awesome looks, great sound system and all that? Same is with FSX He didn't say "want" he said "why do they insist they can". "Wanting", and such a thing being feasible, are two entirely different things. Of course we "want" such a thing, but common sense should prevail. As fullmetal02 implied, such a thing is asking for trouble. For evidence of that statement compare me taxing on the runway at default EGLL in bad REX weather at 40-50 fps, and those with hyper demanding payware airports, in the NGX, with full sliders, complaining that they only get 10 frames per second. And then being misguided enough to suggest they have a gremlin in their systems. Common sense when simming is a very useful thing. fullmetal02's point is a valid one. At 55 I've been simming since Clive Sinclair gave us his remarkable device, but the illogical nature of "expecting it all" should be obvious to even a relative beginner.
February 6, 201313 yr Yes, but don't they insist on that because they want it? Common sense is not a strong side of humans. Hundreds of years have proven that. But I say... always keep the sunny side up ^_^ Indeed! Want, want, want these kids. As for the AF posts Word Not Allowed, I'm with you 100% regarding your results. I would have to be, considering I've been using application controlled for a year with excellent results. And can replicate the frame rate drop over REX water with ease. As for tone of responses, it's very easy for ones intentions to be misunderstood on a forum. We can't see each others facial expressions or body language. That should always be be considered. Most of us who have read your posts, know you aren't the sort of person to be deliberately stroppy.
February 6, 201313 yr Commercial Member AI Traffic can be a killer... especially if you are in a normally populated region of airspace like SFO or LAX, and other similar hotspots worldwide. I usually turn that dowen first, followed by detailed cloud coverage (can be a killer) and then autogen. Just change one at a time, and test, and soon you will find which one you can turn down that suits you and what you still want to see in your sim in terms of visual detail. February 7, 201313 yr If I was to turn down only one which should I start with. Hey Rob My PC is fairly similar to yours in terms of speed and capabilities, and I had everything maxed except 20% on all 3 AI, FPS set to 24, everything was super smooth flying in a storm over central London, and the minute I installed ORBX:ENG it all went to ######... Me and ORBX are done, for good! Richard... Amateur Pilot and UK Web Hosting Guru 🙂
