PMDG, would you consider a kickstarter approach to an MD-11 update so you can cover your costs, make some profit and we share the financial risk?

Agreed hands down - the PMDG MD-11 is super solid in every sense of the word except for the eye candy in terms of textures. The external textures are completely outdated for today's systems and resolutions. But PMDG know whats the better business opportunity. MS shelved the FS project completely, and I guess its time for the entire community to move beyond now.

 

The FSX infrastructure doesn't have any mileage and support to cope with the tech developments in the community market place. The market has moved way ahead of the platform, but we're still compelled to hold on to it, run tweaks and fixes and endlessly re-install FSX, the config files, all our addons - all the different types of them out there, and even our whole operating systems - for those of us totally into it - just to fix one new born bug thats born in the civilization of the current Aztec of an FSX code, somewhere in any recent addition to our FSX experience. There are systems running up to dual 6GB Video cards, up to 8 cores processors, and 64GB RAM and most resourceful motherboard infrastructures that are leveraged fully by most top line video games and FSX can't make much of it.  

 

I have P3D and X-Plane 10 backstage awaiting the next act - be the next to take center stage!

 

But its an awesome simulation of the MD-11, and having recently purchased this one I'm already giving it more miles. I have a feeling it gonna overtake the  NGX and the 744/8 in my hangar. Super stuff PMDG.

Well, for the 747, I can understand that PMDG don't want that because of the upcoming 747 V2

 

So, It's not the same story for the "abandoned" MD-11.

It's clear that there is no more update to come from PMDG for that product, so why to refuse that someone share for free HD VC textures??

At least, it's nice for old customer, at best, new buyer could be interested to buy one with up to date VC.

It's a Win Win deal.

I realy hope that PMDG will revise his position about this particular product.

3rd party repaints are possible and allowed, but repainting the VC of the MD-11, which is obviously not being developed any further anymore and although being done and available for free is not possible due to the EULA?

This leaves a bitter taste somehow and it is a very sad thing.

Why is it a sad thing?

Because it takes away a lot of the enthusiasm and dedication by users for one specific product, which they obviously admire and for which they are willing to put in lots of their personal time and lots of effort to keep it alive and vivid and not just let it (the product) remain captured somewhere in a time capsule and watch it getting older and older day by day.

If money was involved this certainly would be something completely different - but as a freeware ...?!

Why is a freeware-texture-enhancement - and as far as i understood it, it is not much more being discussed here - possible for the exterior model but not the VC?

Maybe i just don't and in fact can't understand it, but i nevertheless consider this a rather sad thing.

I see those 747 VC textures as a nice stop-gap between now and the release of the 747V2. I really see nothing wrong with that, it actually ADDS to the product and does nothing bad to PMDG.

Firstly, PMDG do not allow it (you agree to their terms when you buy the product). Secondly, business wise, it is actually bad for PMDG as they are making a V2 and less people will buy their V2 if people are upgrading V1 (they will have already lost some sales because of this HD texture pack) - the more and more people upgrade V1, the less and less likely they will want to buy V2. It won't dissaude the vast majority from buying V2, but it will some. This is where the EULA is a bit silly, for the MD-11, as the MD-11 is a completely dead project over at PMDG so letting someone release nicer VC textures isn't going to harm their business.

Well, that's a point of view. These textures wouldn't stop me from buying V2 at all, they're indeed better than the original, but miles away from what V2 will be.

Ok, As I said, me and lot of people can understand for the 747, so why for the MD-11?

Really. No.

 

50.000 amounts to well over 500 units. That is NOT a small minority in FS addons world.

And most of the folks that care a single bit about this already own the MD-11, so no new sales from them... the commercial difference is in hundreds of dollars, really.

 

 

Although personally I don't see why not, I can understand if PMDG maintans their position.

I believe a major reason (among others) they will not allow the MD-11 textures release is that it could cannabilize 777 sales. I saw a few posts where people said "90 dollars is too much. I'll stick with my MD-11 for long hauls". Updated textures would only make it easier for people to go that route and forego purchasing the 777.

Well, not everyone is going that route by sticking with MD, i also bought 777 and it is really worth every penny.

 

I think it depends what people like, some people don't like MD11 and some people dont like B777. Money shouldn't be an issue here as the 777 is worth it. 

 

What i think is important, is letting us, the MD11 customers enjoy HD VC textures when we have the opportunity to get them for free, it really doesn't do PMDG any harm.

 

So why not "thank" us, MD11 customers for supporting PMDG with this little "upgrade" which makes us even happier customers?
