I am thinking of getting the MD-11

Featured Replies

As the title says. I have also got 737NGX and the MD-11 aircraft has always been a great looking aircraft to me so how does this compare in general to the 737NGX

Thanks.

see this thread buddy. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/403269-md11-still-worth-it/#entry2629036

You will see how many people still love the MD11.

As for differences, the MD11 was very advanced for its time. There is alot of automation in the systems. The FMC will different than the NGX as is the MCP modes. The principles are the same just different ways of implementing them.

Obviously this flies like a wide body compared to NGX and is a challenge to master flying especially landings. But that  said is rewarding when you do get it right.

Read that thread. Lots of info.

I bought it yesterday. Really enjoying it, a lot to learn tho.

the tutorial flight from egll-lszh is really good ;)

Get the angle of attack training.  It was great for teaching me to fly this bird properly.  Learned way more than just reading the manuals and tutorials. Now I fly this beast, err lady with the utmost confidence.

Are you fellas flying this in FSX or FS9?  I'd be interested in how the bird performs in FS9.

Thanks.

I have it for FS9, and it very quickly became one of my favourites. Performs very well.

To be honest, I would recommend the FSX version instead. Apart from better visuals and animations, once you see just how good the MD-11 was, you will probably want more hi-fidelity sims, and that means the JS41, 737, and 777. and none of them are available on the FS9 platform.

Paul Smith.

Thanks to both.  I'm sure you are right, Paul, but my PC is an oldish dog and can't hack FSX.

I've just downloaded the superb freeware Cal Classics DC7 series. I can run these aircraft on FS9 and I can run the PMDG MD-11.

I'll buy the combi version though - just in case.

As many others said, get it.  The VC graphics is not high res. like the NGX, but it still beautiful and it will not use a huge amount of memory like the NGX.  I am using it for long range flight.  Heck I even wonder if I will ever go for the PMDG 777.  I ran into OOM problem quite often with the NGX, so unless the 777 is better in this regard, I won't get it.

Oldish or stoneage? Anything less then 3 or 4 years should be able to handle FSX without much difficulty. Anything much more then three years old, and you really should consider upgrading.

If you do buy the MD11, this mentioned resource will make flying the plane more enjoyable in my opinion.
