April 9, 201313 yr .....Numerous features in it are literally impossible to do in FS9 - the HUD .... the VSD showing terrain contours from my experience, fs9 vrs f/a18 collimated hud fs9 ifly737 vsd and maddog terrain radar are well done. still use fs9 for the tubeliners with detailed airports and ai, but not as often as before. April 9, 201313 yr I think IFLY stated that their next project will be FS9 compatible, but don't forget that QWing said that two with Boeing 787 and then they change their mind! So until we will see a new product for FS9 from IFLY, let's not make high hops! April 9, 201313 yr I am wondering about the FS9 market... I see people returning to it - for various reasons, often performance-related. I wonder how many PMDG users ever get beyond gawping at how wonderful a product it is, and actually use all that authenticity of systems modelling! It's a bit like owning a 4x4 SUV: they're popular but 95% of them are used on the school run! The FS9 QW 146 flopped, not (I believe) because there is no market, but because there was no market for that particular product in the first place; we already have lots of stuff that does close to that duty. FWIW I never fly it in anything other than "casual" mode. This may be because I'm too idle to learn the systems fully. Now I think of it, actually it spends most of its time in the hangar, ... Given we already have just about everything we need, what might that sweet-spot product be? I suspect Carenado might have an inkling of that, we'll see if they release some more beautiful-to-look-at easy-to-fly models for FS9 in the future. I think the Sky Spirit 787 will be exactly right.
April 9, 201313 yr Me, too: I fly those 60 Euros/80 Dollars planes like a shareware version veeery often - but it's reassuring to know how deeply the systems are modelled and that there is a failure mode, I could activate - if I ever wanted ... What happened to AVSIM
April 9, 201313 yr I have to apologize for my post. I wasn't in the best of moods yesterday when I made the post. While FS2004 is older, it still clearly is capable. The point I failed to state properly that I was trying to make is that FSX is capable of more visually. Please forgive me and do not let this affect your views of AVSIM. Absolutely forgiven. We all make mistakes. But it takes real guts to publicly admit them. Good for you mate. Welcome back here any time :Peace: Ian
April 9, 201313 yr I agree that the QW 146 probably wasn't a fair test of the market. A more popular aircraft might have done far better sales. (Though personally I LOVE their 146 and am still awed by the sharpness of the VC textures)... Realistically, I think the probability of a major payware aircraft for FS9 is pretty slim. (I do think there are a couple of niches that could succeed- including a really good helicopter as the only truly excellent ones for FS9 are from Virtavia and are getting old) But I know of several scenery developers who have no current intention of giving up on FS9 and one has told me that he actually sells slightly more FS9 versions than FSX. (Maybe because there are fewer competitors now in FS9 but still...) My feeling is that the potential of FS9 is close to maxed out and we probably can't expect any dramatic new products. But that doesn't mean the sim isn't worth supporting and I think we have another year or two before the flow of freeware and payware addons may trickle to a halt. And like I said before - I have at least ten years worth of existing addons that I have never even come close to fully exploring.. Until there is a new sim that offers fluid performance and more than just eye candy improvements, I plan to stick around for a long time. (Though I also plan to try out P3D soon. Hey, maybe old dogs can learn new tricks!) Ian
April 9, 201313 yr the potential of FS9 is close to maxed outYou never know, if we continue to forge ahead with a committed user base, some bright spark is going to figure out how to do higher-res textures or something.I was totally amazed when the FS9 64k-poly modelling limit was breached, for example. They said it couldn't be done due to How Little FS9 Can Do! I shamelessly promote FS9 wherever I can, and as more people drift back here, you never know...
April 9, 201313 yr Oh well, there goes the thread: buzz buzz buzz... I'd have thought FSX users were over this by now, it's such an old topic, and such a crappy old sim, to be defending unto death. Do FSX buzzies do this in their forums too? It's really quite tiresome, in fact I am wondering if the mods here can introduce a spell-check that replaces "FSX" with the words: "I'm sorry I barged in here, I realise anything I say here will be irritating and largely useless to FS9 forum members, it was a complete accident, and I'm really sorry, I won't do it again!" - and then transplant the post to the FSX forum in its entirety. Yeah - LOL - I really had to laugh when someone who's been around MSFS for about a minute had to post a thread in the FSX forum "why all payware developers should stop all development on FS9" - like trying to beat a dead horse... It's those darn FS9 guys holding us all back... Par for the course in this "it's all about me" age... Only last week I finally took the time to download the ORBX demo and while it's certainly good - I was back in FS9 before I knew it... Vauchez's KPDX certainly come close to the overall look and feel... So what if we can't run 2048 textures... Guess I'll be one of the dinosaur's left here... Been meaning to give LatinVFR and iFly some cash for their support of FS9... If only I could get a decent Cessna 402... Regards, Scott
April 10, 201313 yr Just remember Scott - the dinosaurs were an incredibly successful species that flourished for far longer than us mammals have been around. If current science is correct, they didn't die out because they were inferior. They would still be dominating the earth if they hadn't been wiped out by an environmental catastrophe. There's no insult in being a dinosaur, even if idiots who don't know what they are talking about use it as an insult. So let's all embrace our inner dinosaur and just keep on flying... And if you're a T-Rex and want to eat the occasional troll or moron who thinks dinosaurs are good targets for insults, go for it! I'll provide the pepper and salt if you need it...
April 10, 201313 yr I just got FSX this Xmas. I see ALL the potential with addons for the sim and enjoy the missions but my FS9 with my $2000.00 DOLLARS worth of addons over 10 years will not be topped any time soon unless there is a NEW SIM made. Not even 3dPrep will change this view and it does not look like MS is in the business any more, AGAIN, with that MS Flight junk. I plan to ENJOY both FS9 and FSX until the world economy improves and there is a better sim made. Carl Perry 13+ year Sim Pilot
April 10, 201313 yr I think this argument is as old as the dinosaurs themselves. I am not only a proud FS9 user, not having to tweak to death, but I still play Intellivision Baseball with my 75 year old father. I guess that makes me an amino acid in prehistoric comparisons. Don't blame for my name, my parents were hippies and met in Woodstock
April 10, 201313 yr Nobody is debating which is better or which should be used. The topic is about what new FS9 airline releases are in the pipeline.
April 10, 201313 yr I think the QW thing real stings because the 787 is really the only aircraft out there that hasn't been done for FS9 (payware that is). I can say that I bought the QW 146 only to support Quality Wings so that they would continue to make products for FS9 and have only flown it a handful of times. Something tells me that I still don't believe that they have given up on the 787 for FS9. I guess I can only hope that my hunch is correct and we may all be surprised only day soon to see and email from Quality Wings stating 787 for FS9 has been released! Oh that would make my day! I have not heard about the Sky Spirit 787, I will need to check that out. April 10, 201313 yr FS9 is for heavy metal hamsters, FSX is for heaven for most, if not all, A2A and Carenado aircraft. Of course, RealAir too. I never dream flying a complex aircraft together with complex airports in FSX. Landing at KATL with 20-30% traffic? Hell no I won't go
April 10, 201313 yr Change my mind about FSX. Just had my first out of memory situation in FSX. I have 3GB ram and 1GB graphic card and using 6GB virtual memory of a 1TB harddrive. FSX running smooth and then it says out of memory on one of the short mission flights. ARE YOU KIDDING. Not even flying a full flight? Wow. Back to FS9 with Camsim 787 and Ken mitchell panel for 787. Hope Sky Spirit or IFLY have enough common sense and guts to take a chance on making 787 for FS9. Carl Perry 13+ year Sim Pilot
