I just assumed that compressed images wouldn't look anywhere as good as full high res.  Never really payed attention.  Just going by how I notice a big difference between 1080p and 720p.

I'll give it a shot and post a few pics here.

I actually have some pictures ready that I want to post on the screenshot forum.  Just finishing things up with Flickr and once I have enough, I will begin posting them.  I made an account there years ago and I thought it's been disabled because I only used it once.  Found an old email with my password and it still works.

Very nice.  I haven't had a chance to start my comparison thread, yet.  But I'm certainly going to try tomorrow.  It'll be fun.  Please do post more of your pix over on the ss forum.  The guys are really getting good, and posting some unbelievable images.

The eye is an amazing thing, but it does have its limitations.  Even the highest resolution images are generally posted at 72ppi.  That is considered the maximum resolution that can be discerned on a standard monitor.  Anything higher just wastes bandwidth and slows down the website.  The conversation changes considerably when you start talking about printed images.

Thanks.  All my current pics are FS9 (except for the three I just posted), but I try to capture them at moments when they look most realistic to my eyes.  I will get some FSX shots and start posting on the screen shot forum.

Looking forward to your comparison thread.  At times the difference in DX10 is very subtle, and other times, very dramatic.

I don't really know anything about digital photography other than things I've read in forums and what you just described (dots per inch).   but when it comes to printed images, that is something where you really notice the difference in quality.

Are you also saying in DX10 the very pronounced performance penalty in DX9 is reduced significantly or eliminated outright?  If that's true that is a very strong argument for DX10 all else being equal.

On my PC turning bloom on or off makes no difference at all when it comes to performance. However, the bloom is so subtle (at least when you always stay in the VC) that I have turned it off again. BTW The Fixer also let's you regulate the amount of bloom with two sliders.

I disagree that dusk and dawn look better in DX10 mode. In fact, I disagree that FSX in DX10 mode looks better than DX9 at any time. The only reason that I was interested in the DX10 Fixer was because of the benefits with respect to VAS. If that hadn't been the case, I wouldn't have purchased it. That's how much I rate the FSX graphics in DX9 mode when compared to DX10.

I am fiddling around with DX10 Fixer at the moment, but the visuals are currently inferior to those in DX9 mode....

* I have reduced the flickering and shimmering of distant textures and objects to a significant degree, but it still isn't as good as the almost "flicker and shimmer free" DX9 graphics.

* Certain textures flash on and off in the distance (white flickering dots).

* The reflections in the water are purple in colour, not white.

* I can see hundreds of stars in the sky at dawn (with the Sun just appearing from below the horizon), whereas I couldn't see any in DX9 mode (which is what I would expect, since only the very brightest stars would be visible in the sky at this time, and even then they would be on the opposite side of the sky to the Sun). In fact, I even saw one star in front of the Moon!

* I can't see the AI plane navigation lights at distance like I could in DX9 mode. Of course, this may well be realistic, but I liked being able to see them

These are the main issues that I have with DX10 mode at the present time, although I am hoping that some of them (at least) can be fixed.

Don't know what you already tried but the only way for me to get good graphics without constant shimmering is to enable 4XSGSS in Inspector. The Fixer's FSAA modes on their own aren't capable of giving me nice graphics, not even close.

Thanks for this impression too.  I'm quite frankly not interested in dinking around trying to make something work that needs more than one installer!  I think I'll hold off on pursuing DX10 until we see how P3D v2 shakes out.  Less and less interesting in constant tweaking to make something work well.

Jeroen,

I am currently testing the DX10 Fixer with AA set to 8xCS, and SuperSampling and AF set to 4xSGSS and 16x through Nvidia Inspector.

Ok, hm... if that doesn't remove all shimmering, what else could...! I only use 4x using the Fixer and 4xSGSS and 16x through Inspector and it seems pretty good to me: higher settings don't improve things.

I have to say it seems that FSAA works differenly with DX10: even the highest setting looks like **** without 4xSGSS...! That's why I settled for 4x! It's odd because with DX9 I used 8xS together with 2xSGSS. With DX10 4x together with 4xSGSS comes close (or better said: it looks the same to me). I posted this elsewhere already but it seems that with DX9 the FSAA setting is very important but with DX10 SGSS makes the most difference and FSAA (which only works using the FSX.cfg setting) seems of less importance.

Jeroen,

I suddenly remember reading somewhere that the FSAA setting in the cfg (using the Fixer or adding/editing them manually) should be the same as the SGSS one... so I wonder if your 8xCS is actually working or not! You might get the exact same result when you use 4x (or when you manually edit both entries in the cfg to 4). Maybe SGSS is limiting FSAA. So I also wonder what happens if you combine 8x with 8xSGSS. (Maybe I am confusing things but you could give it a try.)

I will certainly try 8xSGSS. For the record, I was using 2xSGSS, 8xS AA and 16x AF in DX9 mode

The 'manual' I saw in the link below is gone. I might get some benefit from looking at this manual...If someone could put this manual on the net and give out the link that would be a good thing....

....Yes, there is a manual, (a few pages) Eric, describing exactly how to install it, what the various features are, and how to correct issues which need manual intervention, plus it includes a guide for developers to use in the end pages. It does not tell ....

IMHO the complete DX10fixer manual is worth to be pinned on the top of the forum.

It might a help those who are still hesitating to go into the fixer.

In addition is there planned a FAQ?

Wow!  You guys are serious about your AA.  I'm only using 8xCSAA from the fixer.  8xMSAA works too but I can have a little more ai traffic with CSAA.  Anything more and my PC would probably explode  .

I am having ALL the same issues. Something about the water reflections definately don't look right. Plus some performance issues in heavy areas and extreme weather. And no it is not realistic to NOT see strobes at night at a distance. That is the whole point.
