MSE Oregon - Orbx Airfield compatibility

Featured Replies

Nice comparison Q400_Flyer and a great example of why I prefer photoreal, it is brighter, closer to what I see out the window. FTX textures are just to dark for my tastes. Thanks also for the HU on the sales off to pick up some states.

on the autogen thing, remember when using the annotator, you have 2 modes for placing autogen, either thru single items, or drawing a polygon over the area, which means for areas with lots of forest, you can just draw a big polygon over that area and instant trees.

I tried loading up Annotator and it looks pretty cheesy.  Seems to want me to disable all security on my system in order to use it.  I might hack around with it next week while I'm on vacation.  Maybe Instant Scenery needs a polygon mode...though it doesn't create .agn files I don't think.

Here is a comparison of Orbx Jackson Hole (with CRM enabled) and MSE Jackson Hole (with CRM disabled in the Scenery Library):

As I think you can see, there is no difference between MSE/Orbx scenery around Jackson Hole.  The area and the mountains are exactly the same scenery.  What's neat is the fact that Orbx KJAC works the same with MSE Wyoming.  Pretty neat huh?

I was going to do a comparison around Boise, ID but Boise is not in any Orbx scenery.  I did do some looking around Portland Oregon.  The PNW scenery does not go all the way down to Oregon but Orbx has the freeware Portland City and there was little difference between Orbx Portland and MSE Portland.  Except:  The MSE scenery shows real aircraft on the tarmac and taxiing at KPDX.  The Portland City scenery removes this so think it would be wise to keep Orbx Portland.  Otherwise, the resolution and everything else is the same in the Portland area.

Best regards,

Jim

So MSE scenery uses default night textures?   That would mean that when dusk hits, there's a big change in scenery as the files swap out.   For those of you that have MSE scenery, do you find that distracting?  I'm very tempted in picking up "Florida".

Thanks for the heads up, going to pick-up Georgia and South/North Carolina.

Great shots Jim ......... I'm amazed how similar the FTX and MSE renditions are ... almost identical!

MSE is really looking absolutely beautiful. The quality I think is pretty high to me. My goal is to own the entire USA. At about $50 per state that should come out to $2500! Lol

Are you guys who have FTX KJAC, are you using the runway textures from FTX Aero or REX? Which one looks better to you?

Dave, in this case it's what I would expect.  Orbx KJAC includes a huge surrounding area, including all of the Tetons, much of it in photo with annotation and scenery objects.  From almost any angle in or around the airport, what you're viewing is Orbx KJAC.  Their KWYS - West Yellowstone - is similar.

Jim, what I'd love to see is approaching from further north, say from inside Yellowstone itself north of the lake, or from south of the town of Jackson to see the difference in transition.  Much further east and you're out of Orbx CRM, and you have to go clear west of the Tetons to get out of the KJAC coverage area.

BTW, I've asked this elsewhere, but I'd love to hear of someone who's combined either Blue Sky or MSE v2 with Orbx CRM.  My personal preference is for the Orbx regions, but I'd love to cover the rest of WY with either of these.  Due to the nature of photo, that would mean disabling overlapping areas, and figuring out which ones do that will be a pain.

Is that how much I've spent so far?  LOL.  Most States are $30 or $40 each.  Very rare for a $50 State.  I think the most I paid so far was $50 for Montana but I recently bought Montana and 3 other states and got 25% off the price.  Each week they have a 10% sale.  Texas cost a lot as it was split into 3 separate purchases.  I expect California will be split too but California and Washington State are the last States I will need.

Best regards,

Jim

I did see a transition at the North end of Lake Jackson where the textures near the town were a bit jagged but really barely noticeable.  I will look further out though when I get a chance.

Not sure I understand this statement as any scenery higher in the Scenery Library should trump out anything below it.  I have seen some problems though with MSE V2 around the Woodrow Wilson Bridge enroute to KDCA.  MSE Maryland and MSE Virginia seem to conflict in this area and there are some duplications of buildings (you have to look hard to see it).  But this is the first time I've heard this problem with photoscenery.  I'm hoping the MSE development team will somehow go into areas like this and fix those issues and provide an update after they finish MSE USA.

Best regards,

Jim

So Jim, with that many states under your belt, how much disk space we talkin' about for ya?

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.

It doesn't matter where photoscenery is in the library. It's trumps all landclass, vector, autogen scenery. But I've noticed that utx does adjust lakes, rivers, and coastlines. You can see the rivers change underneath the watermask/photoscenery when turning utx on.

I'm pretty sure orbx pnw goes down well into the middle of Oregon. Their google kmz hows this at least. And I'm pretty sure I've flown down the coast of Oregon in orbx. Don't know where you got the idea that pnw stops at Portland.

It doesn't swap out the textures so to speak, but if a photoreal section doesn't have a lightmap defined it uses the default lightmaps of the tiles beneath it. So it'll still be MSE stuff, just with the default lights (glowing ground) overlaid. It shouldn't be too distracting beyond having lights in the wrong spots.

OrbX PNW goes all the way to just south of Roseburg and Myrtle Creek. However it's a pretty narrow strip of coverage. If you also have CRM, you have almost all of Oregon covered.

Yeah, Orbx PNW definitely doesn't stop at Portland.  It doesn't go all the way down to the Oregon / California border, but a fair way down (OR73 / OG41)  :-
