Reduced pixel-count AVSIM screenshots don't tell the story of FTXG...sorry....

Featured Replies

Im thinking the issue with commercial screen shots is that they can look fantastic with the right angle and scenery sliders maxed out with bloom/ENB, light reflection etc. We can all do that for a screenshot but most of us have an old friend called FPS and for that screen to move in a usable manner we may have to use settings not the same as a carefully grabbed screenshot.

So user shots probably mean more to me although some dont always do a product justice i must admit.

Kind Regards

Simon.

because of, and ONLY BECAUSE of...seeing pictures posted to AVSIM, and any other site that makes you reduce the screen grab in resolution and pixel count to fit upload mandates.

The only image restriction here at AVSIM happens if you upload the image to the AVSIM servers.  If you link the photo to AVSIM from a site like fsfiles.org there are no restrictions but you should be careful with the size as not everyone has a super-powerful computer system and high-speed connection that you might have.

Just wanted to make this perfectly clear.  The Image Posting Rules can be found under the Forum tab in the Main AVSIM menu above.

Best regards,

Jim

Got gex and ftx offers nothing new I see.

Night lighting for the entire planet with no FPS loss isn't something new? Sharper, less blurry city textures aren't new? Covering the entire world instead of regions isn't new? Denser, re-textured, much better annotated autogen isn't new?

Its all new. Whether its better is subjective.

Funny that the only continuous contrarians are those who don't even have it.

In the thread titled "Some GEX - FTX Global comparisons" the Mogadishu with GEX looks sharper than the blurry looking FTX Global.

You can post the image to external sites like imgur.com and then link it here.  The images can (and, I hope, will) be quite large.

Exactly.

Not even close.

Afaik FTXG takes up 2 GB more space then default. During the install you can choose to backup the original textures to a different drive, if you want to.

After seeing that comparison thread I was getting skeptical as well but picked it up anyway after seeing Molleh's thread and doing some comparison shots.

I posted some side by sides in J van E's thread.

The difference is pretty stark and the night environment and lighting alone is worth the price of admission for the whole world.

I absolutely agree with every word!  The new 'night life'....is very X-Plane'ish...not the full benefit of XPlane...but is on the right roadway.

If the comparison shots are at the same resolution then it shouldn't make a difference when trying to compare GEX/Default vs. FTXG relative to each other.

But that reduced resolution is NOT what you would see and enjoy upon your monitor!  There will be persons who will ONLY buy or not buy, by looking for representational screen grabs, instead of based upon prior ORBX purchases and how they look upon their home system.  Such a shame...but it will occur.

Hey Ses tell us how you really feel....lol.

I personally am waiting until I hear, see all the first blush reaction.  I also know exactly what this product does and would have to believe that overall the Orbx texture sets plus whatever new ones they have added plus the landclass adjustments could only work to improve the fsx world views.

I do spend most of my time in Orbxland regions quit frankly....so I'm not in a hurry to fly all those other areas of the world I do not regularly fly to just because I can.

Looks like a winning product and is like buying FSX all over again.

1st...I'm having a ball.  I haven't even much made it out of  Michigan...it is looking so darn GOOD!  I retook my favorite haunting...VFR'ing from KNFT up to Mackinac Island...and the actual interstate, I-75 never looked so clear and its laneway edges so visible. GEX was not rendering the interstate in this manner. It was so easy to keep in sight at my highest altitude for the trip of 3,500 feet.  I almost fell out of my chair when I first saw Mackinac Island!   This product has SERIOUSLY upped the ante for flight sim eye-candy realism. Yes, I'll still buy regionals..but with the HYBRID mode engaged,........................................ YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!

Of particular interest....... I don't see many (or is it any) actual purchasers of this product complaining. Everybody else is just sitting around trying to justify, why they do, or don't want it.

What a great comment and observation....LOLOLOLOL!   Well said..and noted.  Large smile on my chops for sure!  ....no complaints...and waiting for the custom LCpacks to come, Larry.

Too right, we're too busy flying!

No complaints at all it absolutely transforms FSX, but what has not changed is that you still obviously need good landclass/terrain to get the best out of it, so you see those great textures in the right place. I even bought UTX TAC just to fly around the Caribbean, and had a wail of a time pottering around Kingston, Jamaica.

I have UTX TAC, too..the carib is fabulous!

Got gex and ftx offers nothing new I see.

....oh..geez...it SURE DOES!   Can't even get out of Michigan....let alone whatever else is out there to discover. Oh..The Caribbean (went for a jaunt last night) with UTX for that region is outstanding.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!

I'm not trying to justify why I do or don't want it. I'm not for or against Orbx. I'm trying to make up my mind based on what people are really seeing(and showing in their screen shots). And so far, I just don't see anything that makes this worth $91. Most of the shots I've seen looks like default FSX just with slightly enhanced or different colors and/or some different autogen then we had before. It's not anything that blows me away yet. It's just different. Which in and of itself isn't necessarily better or worse. Just different - which can be better just for that reason alone to some people I guess.

The night lighting does look pretty nice. But, again, for $91 just for that. I am not sure it's worth it yet. Especially when I have UTX. Though yes, I hear FTXG has next to no hit on FPS like UTX does. But, you can't use FTXG night lighting in photo real areas either so that's a negative for me since I use a lot of photo real.

I'm trying to see past the people that are going to love it just because it's Orbx and the people that hate it just because it's Orbx. I'll buy it if I can be convinced somewhere that it will be worth $91. I"m just not there yet with what I've seen.

UTX night lighting works above photoreal? Are you sure?

Yes. I'm sure. I forget the exact reasons as to why but it has something to do with the way UTX generates the lights(vector I believe).

UTX moving traffic and night lighting objects will show on photoreal scenery.

Strange, I guess my mind is playing tricks on me. I'll have to go back and try this again to see. I really wish there was some way to get FTX Global's night lighting to work on top of photo scenery though.

Yes- I have sim-savvy scenery, and UTX looks really nice on top of it.  Can't compare it to the FTX product as I don't have it....
