Reduced pixel-count AVSIM screenshots don't tell the story of FTXG...sorry....

People can, and will, make up their own minds.   I don't think AVSIM's screenshot quality comes into it (it's always looked good to me; have you seen the quality of the pics in the Screenshot Section?).

For me it highlights the Orbx marketing machine and just how targetted and considered the pre-release screenshots were.   I've seen some pretty decent screenies since release (such as Jeroen's) but also some very mediocre pics.   I've seen nothing that looks like the pre-sale marketing pics though.

I'm not slating the product, just saying that I expected to have bought it buy now, based on the pre-release Orbx screenies, but as yet, I am not ready to spend $99 on what I've seen so far.

I don't think I've reached that decision because of "AVSIM's Screenshot quality", or because I am misguided.

+1 for me too, although I may buy it-  the night lighting sounds cool....

One question-  until I purchase a new SSD, I have limited space on my FSX root drive....  does anyone know if this product needs to reside on the FSX root drive?

Thanks,  Bruce.

I think I will try to make some pictures with commercial purposes in mind myself this weekend, just for fun. ^_^

Here is one for example. Wouldn't look TOO bad on the Orbx site imho.

EDIT

Or an early evening in Switzerland:

Or some barren hills in South-America:

There really are worse pictures on the Orbx site. Even WITH ENB. ^_^

FTGX is simply looking good and it's not hard to make nice screenshots if you try.

It's textures, so it must get installed right into FSX.

I agree. I've seen screen shots of other sceneries/aircraft and they look beautiful. I always comment on Niklas'(from Sweden) home made photoreal scenery shots that he posts here from time to time. They look beautiful!!! By far and away as good as, if not better than any payware out there. These Orbx shots that I've seen so far can't come close to comparing to that. To me, they are simply different than the original or GEX, but they aren't "game changers". I saw someone else post saying it's like a different artist's rendition. Is it better? Not necessarily. That's all going to be up to the individual and what they prefer. It's just a different interpretation.

Don't get me wrong, the scenery they have created here in FTXG is good. But $91 good? The only thing that makes it possibly worth that is that it covers the globe. I don't know. I'm still debating. I want to agree with this post but again, I've seen images that have blown me away. These aren't doing that.

Of particular interest....... I don't see many (or is it any) actual purchasers of this product complaining. Everybody else is just sitting around trying to justify, why they do, or don't want it.

Too right, we're too busy flying!

No complaints at all it absolutely transforms FSX, but what has not changed is that you still obviously need good landclass/terrain to get the best out of it, so you see those great textures in the right place. I even bought UTX TAC just to fly around the Caribbean, and had a wail of a time pottering around Kingston, Jamaica.

I don't think it's the pixel count. I can see a difference but if you already have GEX it becomes a Pepsi vs Coke argument.

The difference needs to be overwhelmingly better IMHO to switch colas. I'll stay with GEX until I see something I have to have.

FTXG textures replace the FSX textures.  I'm pretty sure you can move the backed up FSX textures to another location, so the overall hit on drive space shouldn't be too bad.  Eventually though, you're going to have to upgrade, so why not now, if you have the funds?

Thanks- that makes sense that the update would;t take much more space if it's replacing existing textures, other than any additional file-size for enhanced textures....

I'm getting another SSD soon for a birthday present (another month- so saving my space for the B777 if it ever materializes in the next month...)

I don't think that's unique to ORBX.  I have a copy of MSE v2 Illinois that I purchased based on photos. There is a noticable difference between the grass in the photos and in the installed scenery.

That was my point, taking a pic and play around with it to make it look fantastic for commercial purposes is NOT what the regular simmer will see flying around, I'm not saying that FTXG is not improving FSX default though but there is a world of difference between Orbx's pre-sale pics and reality.

Not only did their pictures look better than what I see posted now; they also looked better than what I see flying the Vancouver Island area of the FTX Pacific Northwest regional scenery.

Afaik FTXG takes up 2 GB more space then default. During the install you can choose to backup the original textures to a different drive, if you want to.

If you have FSX on your WIndows drive though, you will need more space because the installer will extract itself on your OS drive. So make sure there is room on that one too!
