August 27, 201312 yr Im only guessing, I feel that this society has changed so much over the last few years as we are expected to be politically correct in every way we can imagine in the real world, that has been a good thing in so many way's believe me im all for it. Sadly not everyone feels the same, Im guessing this new wave of online abusive behaviour is somehow connnected, Like people who feel they must express themselves as they would wish to (but cannot) In the real world, seek to do as they wish online assuming that this is ok. Point raised that here in the UK, online bullies pushed one young Girl over the edge recently and I think that is just the tip of a massive iceberg amongst schoolkids, if the manpower was available to look into this kind of thing it would soon come up with some startling figures im sure. That is just the UK, and I reckon it must be pretty much the same worldwide, really a very sad state of affairs with no real cure it seems. thats only my opinion and I dont seek to offend anyone. Regards. Guss. Anthony Kemp. (Guss) -Please  I heard, " There are 10 types Of people in the world, Those who understand Binary and those who don't " I must be the 9th Type.....
August 27, 201312 yr Author  Dang! There's silly ole me thinkin' it was just the school holidays. If only it was! People write stuff on the Internet they would never dream of saying to someone's face. Just the other day I was given a link to a documentary about the Su-27 posted on Youtube. The users' comments were unbelievable. It's prevalent on the Internet and I can't understand why these people feel the need to lash out against anyone and everyone online. Whilst I think Dillon might be going a bit off the beaten track in bringing the Martin/Zimmerman thing into this, I think his point is fundamentally right. I'm reminded of when I studied The Lord of the Flies at school - remove the thin veneer of civilization and we turn into savages. The anonymity of the Internet has removed the need to take responsibility for the things we say, and a lot of people take that as a green light to write the most offensive, insulting and confrontational things. Back to ADX, from what I can gather the comments from this article was the straw that broke the camel's back: http://airdailyx.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/orbx-ftxglobal-freeware-airports.html#comment-form Which followed on from this: http://airdailyx.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/ftx-global-v11-patch-latest-info.html I honestly wonder whether or not the oh so clever people who accused him of being greedy and condoned the piracy of his products would say that to his face? I'd bet not. So now as a result we've got what is the best news source for FS on the Internet caught in the crossfire from Internet trolls with an axe to grind and the Orbx boss who can't seem to realise the damage he's doing to his own company's public image. Nobody wins. Everybody loses. Nick

Your right I went off track a bit with my post above but I was trying to give examples of a larger problem overall which you further defined with your post. I forgot about what one finds on YouTube in the comments section which is another great example. August 27, 201312 yr I visited AirDailyX this morning to see that they have now disabled the comments on all their articles. The reason cited was that the hostile and negative comments aimed at developers were getting out of hand and were taking too much time to moderate. ADX had a very light handed approach to moderating and it's quite sad to see that this was used as a free rein for people to write some pretty nasty and abusive stuff about various developers that went way beyond constructive criticism. Why is it that when placed in front of a keyboard and monitor, under the veil of Internet anonymity so many of us become obnoxious cretins? Are we not shooting ourselves in the foot? It's not just in the little FS world I see this sort of stuff going on... It's all over the Internet. Those of us in the UK will know of the recent press stories of the feminist campaigner who received rape and death threats over Twitter, and the recent case of the 14 year old girl who committed suicide after receiving abuse on an Internet forum. I can't help but feel that for all the fantastic things the Internet represents in terms of the exhange of information and ideas, meeting new people and communicating... it's also become the single greatest vehicle of stupidity and ignorance in human history. I'm starting to think that some people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the Internet. On a related note, this always brings a smile to my face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0SJmAfj_DI Agreed. The flip side of the coin, though, is hypersensitivity. Admins and readers need to thicken their skin a bit. If someone is out of line, sure, address them individually. But eliminating a forum of discussion in its entirety is a step too far in my opinion.

In this specific case I can understand why the blog owner took that action. The sheer volume of comments is (was) simply too much for one person to handle in a timely manner, and it is likely not even possible to have multiple "moderators" with that "blogware"... Fr. August 27, 201312 yr It's already been said, but there are really two issues, the first and most serious is that people behave differently when they believe there will be no come-back. The second is that people now appear to be hyper-sensitive. The young girl that took her own life due to internet bulling, why couldn't she just switch off the computer? It does make you wonder what life would be like without laws or the means to enforce them, probably a very scary place. We live in a time when freedom of speech is being curtailed as never before, but, somewhat ironically, people are able to communicate like never before. Ian R Tyldesley
August 27, 201312 yr Commercial Member From my side, though i consider myself pretty well raised and polite, I still have to be really careful because the moment i go behind a computer screen and start talking through a keyboard, I tend to lose a lot of inhibitions. And i think that goes for most of us. Electronic communication is kinda becoming to humans what red kryptonite is to superman..... August 27, 201312 yr I just think it's hilariously ironic that ADX no longer allows comments, they who kept bashing Avsim for censoring and moderating discussions are now themselves allowing no discussion at all. Just goes to show that the approach taken by Avsim, while maybe not correct 100% of the time, no system is, is the only way to do things, and they learnt the hard way. Perhaps now all those childish comments that kept berating Avsim for it's moderating stance will now learn that just because you aren't talking with someone face to face doesn't give you the right to insult them or criticise them without proper justification. There in belies the major issue, what you consider "insulting" and what you consider to be "proper justification", may not be what i consider the same. So do we go for the lowest possible denominator? An Internet filled with puppies and kittens? Personally, if i find a comment insulting, i will say so, should it continue, i would simply not respond, if the insults or abuse is continuous or dominates, then i simply would no longer visit the site or engage with the individual. Here we go with relativism... Seeing as there's really no religious code of ethics in the western world anymore we have to use common since. Yes you can go somewhere else but if we let the behavior go unchecked others will do it and no one will want to come to Avsim or other related forums. I'll turn this around and say if I can control myself why can't you? There has to be a standard of effective constructive communication so we all can benefit from discussions. August 27, 201312 yr Mark my word it's all a result of the forced fluoridation of public water supplies here in the USA. Because of this reckless and unresearched policy, we've now fostered a generation of cavity-free mutants who have access to internet technology and perhaps soon even Facebook. First we allowed the Government to build public restrooms, all the while during which we never blinked an eye, and now the fluoride scourge is upon us. Recreational Flight Simulation as we know it is doomed, DOOMED I tell you. And for the record, I did not vote for Obama!
August 27, 201312 yr Great post Dillon best thing I read all week ! life is much simpler when one when just concedes people suck and move on . y'all have a lovely day now. And let's concede that it's basically fear that makes us (us!) aggressive. Think about the last time you were (I was) aggressive. The last time you witnessed someone else being aggressive. The last time you heard about two people or two groups of people becoming aggressive towards each other ... What happened to AVSIM
