What's Wrong With People On The Internet?

Featured Replies

I visited AirDailyX this morning to see that they have now disabled the comments on all their articles. The reason cited was that the hostile and negative comments aimed at developers were getting out of hand and were taking too much time to moderate. ADX had a very light handed approach to moderating and it's quite sad to see that this was used as a free rein for people to write some pretty nasty and abusive stuff about various developers that went way beyond constructive criticism.

Why is it that when placed in front of a keyboard and monitor, under the veil of Internet anonymity so many of us become obnoxious cretins? Are we not shooting ourselves in the foot?

It's not just in the little FS world I see this sort of stuff going on... It's all over the Internet. Those of us in the UK will know of the recent press stories of the feminist campaigner who received rape and death threats over Twitter, and the recent case of the 14 year old girl who committed suicide after receiving abuse on an Internet forum.

I can't help but feel that for all the fantastic things the Internet represents in terms of the exhange of information and ideas, meeting new people and communicating... it's also become the single greatest vehicle of stupidity and ignorance in human history. I'm starting to think that some people shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the Internet.

On a related note, this always brings a smile to my face:

It's typically the few 'idiots', which ruin it for everyone else... That being said, I totally agree with this choice from ADX... The commenting WAS getting out of hand - it was really sad to see...

I might not have met you all in person, but I still respect who you are. That sort of attitude is scarce amongst todays internet users, although it fortunately still exists. I have been called many abusive names by some power crazy beings quite a lot while playing online games. Its not nice and is rather offensive. I think for the reason we are sat behind a monitor without actually ever meeting the people we are talking to gives some the incentive to act out of the ordinary and be abusive towards people. Yes, they might not meet in person, but because of that, it still doesn't give people the reason to be very disrespectful and treat others like dirt.

Problem with a discussion groups. Sissy cowards can be tough guys and tough guys have to be sissy cowards!

It's the school holidays and bored kids have unfettered use of the computer. I've noticed a rise in 'inane' threads during the holidays.

I feel it's man's true nature coming out showing we'll always have social issues. It's amazing you posted this because it really hit the fan here in America with the Trayvon case. I'll go out on a limb and say Zimmerman was a self defense case and it was shameful everyone from the president on down was defending a kid that was nothing more than a thug. The comments section on CNN went straight back to pre-American Civil War or Jim Crow... It truly shows where things would be at if we had a natural disaster and society broke down, prisons became unmanageable, and laws no longer existed. With the internet you really see whats in people's heads. Next came the silence from all these protesters about the Australian that was killed and the WWII vet. That sent people over the top. I agree you can't stand up for a thug like Trayvon and say nothing for truly innocent victims that contributed positively to society. I'm truly troubled by this and can understand the anger. This has set race relations back at least 10 years not only in America but abroad as well. We have a president that surrounds himself with the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce the very one's who's music genera (them included) are responsible for the thug/narcissistic mentality that has spread around the world with pants sagging and the like and doesn't stand up for people cut down for no reason at all. These cases were big enough to warrant a response from not only the President but all those Trayvon protesters as well if we go with the thinking wrong is wrong no matter who does it.

I look at how people responded to the Jodi Aries trial and the Hannah Anderson killing saying she was sleeping with her capture. Without fully knowing details of cases we have virtual lynch mobs which actually turn tides in how jurors decide cases these days (Nancy Grace should be off the air for feeding these mobs). It's troubling what people really have going on in their heads and what people will say when they think no one really knows who they are. We have not come that far socially as we once believed. Outside of the music industry which is pitiful now days, reality TV glorifies the mentality as well by sticking a camera in someone's living room and watching the train wreak (throw out the writers of good stories, they cost too much). No concern for what others feel by these so call reality TV stars, it's all about them (I might have to start taking in Bollywood movies to get away from the crap). They've even infiltrated the Amish community... More recently it has been surprising for me to see where things are actually at in society. I used to think it was just a few people getting hot headed over our FS developers (hadn't surfed many other forums over the years) but since branching out and reading comments on sites like CNN (of all places), I'm shocked to see what we deny in our natural characters as humans is still very much prevalent. The FS community all around is actually the positive exception not the rule on the internet when it comes to manners and respecting each other even in our worst times...

Just look at all the comments on CNN articles.  Most of them would be written by grown adults I would presume.

As for Trayvon and the rest..... I really would have preferred not to go there.........

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.
