iOS 7 Win or Fail

Featured Replies

Has anyone taken the plunge yet? I am reading a lot of negative things about poor UI implementations, stuttering, lag, loss of features, flatness...whatever that means.

I am more than happy with my jailbroken iOS6 iPhone 5 and have it set up perfectly for my needs, so I may take a pass on this one for now.

From past experience, there's no way I'm updating my iPad (3rd gen) to iOS7 until the dust settles - a lot - but then my iPad was purchased to run specific apps that are working just fine, not so much for generic playing around, so I've no compelling reason to risk what it already does well.  As for the things it doesn't do well (like Siri -yechh!) they're mostly gimmicks that I don't use anyway.  I'll let the guys that like to play with their devices do the suffering for me!

A friend of mine got it on his iPhone 5 recently and boy was I disappointed. I was excited to see what the new iOs would bring to the table since I own an iPad 2 but it looks too Windows 8'ish to me. Flushed out colors, the terrible lag between response times into starting applications, the ridiculous feature known as 'Siri' are all a failure to me personally.

There's probably more that I would dislike but I couldn't return the phone to him fast enough after just a minute or two with it. It's not for me and I'm quite happy with my jailbroken iPad 2 running iOs6.

Then again, it's like the new AA paint scheme. A lot of people disliked it and I wasn't a big fan either but over time, it's grown on me and now I think it's excellent!

For now, I think I really miss the creativity Steve Jobs brought in.

Just updateing my iPad 2 and my new iPhone 5 (my old 3 GS died recently, it just did not let calls appear!). Hopefully it does not look that aweful as it looked like on the pictures on the net.

I made a before and after picture of my iPhone homescreen:

I know a lot of my colleagues at work have switched to the S4 with the latest incarnation of Android. I see some positive directions for Android, but it's simply too cluttered with features and functions that will never get used. It seems to me that Apple is slowly taking it in that direction with iOS, but also with MacOS.

Probably the most interesting iO7 feature as far as the phone is concerned:

Block Phone Numbers: Specific contacts and phone numbers can be blocked within iOS 7. Go to Settings > Phone > Blocked to add contacts that will be prevented from calling (sending the calls to voicemail), FaceTiming, and sending messages.

Great for blocking those pesky creditors... ^_^

Safari swiping to delete bookmarks is nice.

Deleting Bookmarks in Safari: Swipe left on bookmarked pages to quickly delete them. This also works in Reading List.

I have soooo many bookmarks to delete but, kind of a pain on the pc. Now you can swipe 'em away. Really nice.

You can all read more about it here. Still not sure though if this is an upgrade. I'm gonna need to see way more than that to warrant giving up my jailbreak.

It seems to me, from a purely aesthetic point, the only difference in the home screen was gloss removal from the icons, flattening of the dock, and changes to the menu bar font. I hate to say this, but I kind of prefer the original look, if I had to choose between either.

If Apple's going for minimalism, they're definitely on the right track.

I like the new aesthetic, and I like the ability to swipe up from the bottom access settings, as well as the "Palm Pre-esque cards" for switching and closing apps; it was one of the Pre's best, most intuitive features. It's not earth shattering, but I read a review that made sense -changing the look and some of the UI after 6 years was going to be jarring enough; if they implemented too many changes there would be a large backlash. This may be the foundation for things to come.

You may be right...after all, iOS has been a steady but slow progression since day one. We can only hope they don't muck this up going forward.

In my opinion its a win and a fail. Just played around with it on some friends iphones at work and will update my wifes when I get home.

I say it's a win because it adds some good functionality, but I also say it's a fail because the majority of the features are things I've had on my Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE (and others on Android would have had) for quite a while. Good for Apple users though.

I also think it looks a bit "cartoon", but I'm sure I'll get over that. lol

I have the iPhone 4 and installed it this afternoon and so far no problems. It runs smooth and it has grown on me. But then again, I'm the iPhone 4 so the experience may be different on the other platforms.

I installed it on my iphone 4, ipad mini, 2 and 4 and it look and runs great. Very pleased with it.

As an aside I was reading somewhere about the new 5S and stock shortages. This is a quote I have never heard of before

"We will have grotesquely unavailable inventory," one US-based carrier source said.

as opposed to simply stating "We currently have none in stock"

We have two iPhones and an iPad and I won't update them. iOS 6 works great. Maybe down the road but like said above I will let the dust settle as well.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Well, after some time getting used to it, I do like it, especially on my iPhone 5 it does look extraordinary good. I had the thoughts that it would look too cartoonish but at least on this it looks pretty noble with all these thin lines. The new functions are also pretty much appreciated and are very intuitive.

On my iPad 2 it doesn´t look that good than on the iPhone. There it looks a bit washed out and some things seem to be a bit pixelated but that is probably cause of the worse resolution of the display. I think the retina display does make a big difference on the appearence of the iOS.

Updated my 4S and iPad 3 yesterday. The process took a bit of time because of everyone rushing to download, but it eventually finished up painlessly. I like the new look...very sharp, snappy, and smooth, no lag whatsoever (I know one of the beta versions had lag). A few things are done differently now, flinging cards up to close apps being one, but overall, I think they're moving in the right direction with iOS 7. I like the call block feature...added my very long list of "spam callers" to it.  :Applause:

As mentioned, I'm app, not OS version, driven.  Anyone else who has critical apps they depend on need to check on their apps first before blindly updating.  Some apps have not been made compatible yet, and while they may "work", they may not work properly or may not look very good following the changes.  Here, for example, is a note from the latest version of ForeFlight, my major flying app:

"ForeFlight Mobile 5.4 is iOS 7 compatible, however, we recommend caution in upgrading  to iOS 7 right away until the dust settles on initial bugs that inevitably come with significant upgrades."

A couple of early adopters indicate ForeFlight seems to be working fine, but I still have no compelling reason to hurry without more info.
