Is DX10Fixer just that easy to set up and go?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

There have been so many posts since the release of Steve's DX10Fixer and I was concerned some details being lost within. Forgive me for sounding stupid. I have been in and out of the loop lately and don't want to mess things up.

Is it as easy as running the installer pretty much? Is there any specific things that need to be done after? I saw some options within the installer that a few have selected wrong settings perhaps and messed things up? I wanted to purchase and download this evening. Any input is greatly appreciated. I just do not want to mess up my FSX installation as it would take a month of Sundays to start over. Thanks in advance. :-)

For the most part it's VERY simple. Run the program and it's set.

You will want to ensure that Anti-Aliasing is checked within FSX (just check the box) before jumping in expecting everything to look all smooth and wonderful. From there it's all up to you and what AA settings that you find to be acceptable. Read some of the other threads already posted concerning AA setup  with DX10 and the fixer and you'll be on your way. IMO, FSX has never looked and ran so well.

I've been waiting for you to post Jeff.  I knew you would have a question like this!  :Just Kidding: (Just kidding).  It really is simple especially if you do not touch any of Steve's default settings.  If you are like me with mainly FSX/Acceleration stuff installed with no legacy or FS9 stuff, then it should be simple to set up.  It was a bit confusing for me in that under DirectX, there's a button to push for DX10 Compatible Lights and Effects.  It should be enabled but the button says Disable which means it IS enabled.  So I had some nasty artifacts when I had this button set to Enable as I thought that's what it meant that it was enabled.  But the program really works well.  I am more than satisfied!!!  The rain effect is awesome!

Best regards,

Jim

I'm going to give it one more try. If there's any shimmering of panel instruments and in particular the GPS in my 172, I'm out!

At present I'm running a beautiful FSX almost all sliders are maxed and 16AS & 8AA Supersampling (ATI 5870 (or is it 5780?) Don't know what the 'frames' are like, never look. All I know is, for the most part it's smooth. Some airports cause a bit of grief on occasion, but nothing I can't live with.

Er...I'll do it tomorrow, I promise.

EDIT: Nice new banner Jim. :good:

Ron, I bought this this afternoon, and just posted to the other thread a mini review of an A/B usage comparison. See if it answers any of your questions. Hope it helps.

The stuff within the DXFixer itself is all really straightforward.    Run it, turn on 'DX10', turn on the effects, and you're pretty much done.

However....... there is some tuning to be done away from the fixer.     Around AA, AF and some other stuff that needs to be looked at or considered.    I think it's fair to say that this is more for ATI users to worry about than nvidia.  Eg. ATI users who want vsync with DX10, still need to run RadeonPro (a free, but completely separate standalone program) before starting FSX.

So for nVidia users it's closer to being 'plug and play'.

But the fixer does a huge amount - the first time I used DX10 with the manual tweaks, it took me a whole day (around 6 hours) to get everything researched, installed, tweaked and configures.      That whole day is literally done by launching the DXFixer and pressing a couple of buttons.

But you may still have some work to do, around Anti-Aliaing and Ansiotropic Filtering.

Thank you SO much guys :-)

Jim, you know me all too well...LOL!

I am going to give this a go shortly.

I finally bit the bullet and bought it and have to say it was extremely easy to set up. I defaulted my Nvidia Inspector profile back to stock and fired it up and it was soo smooth I was getting motion sickness like when I first started playing OpenGl Quake.

Hmmm.  I do admire those who jump in ahead of me because you give me footpaths with which I can follow...

But before I do something drastic to my beloved FSX, I do want to hear from those (whom have NVidia cards and NVidia-Inspector) and whom have not dabbled with DX10 before this application.

I'm lazy and clueless and literally want a 1 - to - 2 - to - 3 - to - 4 path with lots of "back up and undo this" instructions as needed.

Of course the first thing I did was turn on aircraft casts shadow on itself for vc shadows and then bloom.... couldn't resist!

I am still playing around with things and most likely will have questions from the experts. Hopefully by tomorrow evening I'll have more time to access things, but so far, it seems good... especially the bloom which was not even a consideration without HUGE fps hit before.  I have my fps locked inside fsx to 40? Should I set to unlimited with DX10? I'd rather leave it locked to prevent blurry scenery issues, but wanted to double check. Still may try it for kicks now that I have something new to play with.....again!

That's me...just taking a break from having landed at KBOS.  I have not touched my nVida Inspector FSX settings. I have gone directly to the Nvidia Panel and adjusted from there, what is truly used in DX10. Piece of cake. The program to set up...piece of cake. You do NOT screw up your install, but I would suggest you read the manual to make yourself familiar with what is what....not technical...very easy to follow, and you will be soon up and running.  If you have a graphics card like for instance a GTX680 2GB...and any modern high-end CPU, you can start cranking on EVERY option and feature, and keep at least what your FPS were using DX9, and a constrained feature set.  Like I kidded tonight in Paul's thread...I am truly never going back to DX9. It had its day...and at least with DX10, you can glean some of that horsepower from your system (especially your GPU!)  Too bad we couldn't utilize DX11, but I, with the performance seen since purchase early this evening, I have absolutely no regrets in being $35.00 lighter....because of it.  This, and FSXG, world-wide, gave me what I had been looking for all along.....  Have fun!

FPS @ 40 is not necessary.  Check the following with your rig :

1. FSX @ Unlimited with NI locked at 30

2. FSX @ 30 with NI not locked

One of them ought to give you better results than the other.

I'm lazy and clueless and literally want a 1 - to - 2 - to - 3 - to - 4 path with lots of "back up and undo this" instructions as needed.

1. Backup the FSX.cfg

2. Delete it so that FSX can create a fresh one on startup

3. Back up the current NI profile

4. Install the fixer.  Note that you can install the fixer anywhere on any drive on your computer.  Do not get messed up with the message that shows up when the installer prompts you to for a FS location on the computer.  This is a message error which Steve confirmed to me.

4. Run the fixer

5. Enter the path for FSX

6. Install the libraries (can be uninstalled by clicking it again. Try it.

7. Select DX10 mode

8. Set AA (In my case 4x)

9. Dont mess with anything else.

10. Fire up FSX so that FS can create the cfg file.

11. Shut down FSX

12. Add the HighMemFix=1 to the [Graphics] section and save the cfg file

13. Run NI and set it up using the Steve's "How To" which is pinned to this Forum

14. You are good to go.

Going back to DX9 is pretty much straight forward.

1. Exit FSX

2. Run the Fixer

3. Uninstall the libraries and close the fixer

4. Replace the FSX.cfg file

5. Replace the NI profile with the one that you backed up earlier

Bingo

Hope this helps

That all seems straightforward Teddy. Except the bold assumption that everyone has an nVidia card and the world famous Inspector!

I have one qualm left. Is DX10 scared of fullscreen display? My previous foray into DX10 showed a distinct reluctance to display A, on my main monitor and B, in full screen. I had to drag the window back from my side monitor onto my big monitor and then change to full screen. Yes, FSX was exited on full screen.
