Do we Love X-Plane? Don't we?

I think this thread is about X-Plane...

Are you really sure?  I was under the impression, this subforum meanwhile became an FSX/P3D-forum ....

Should someone start a "Do we love FSX?" discussion in the FSX forum and give installation instructions for X-Plane? This would get REALLY interesting/exciting .

Should someone start a "Do we love FSX?" discussion in the FSX forum and give installation instructions for X-Plane? This would get REALLY interesting/exciting .

The reason is simple:

Here are mostly people who use both, and most of them are primary FSX users.

It can be compared with someone who wants to swim in the ocean, but the water feels ice cold and uncomfortable first. Instead of jumping all in, most people make cautious steps, and intuitively step back when they feel the cold.

So this forum here is not so much about "swimming in the ocean", but about the challenge to get into the ocean first (or realizing that the possible joy of swimming is not worth getting a cold afterwards.)

Edit: I want to add something I'm thinking about actually for quite a while. I see avsim as a very important place for X-Plane and the flight simulation community in general, because it is a forum where X-Plane and FSX users can come together instead of being apart. This can only be good for both sides.

I wish that more experienced X-Plane users (those who are using X-Plane since some years and are happy with it) were here, and this would show FSX users that there are INDEED users who have lots of fun with X-Plane.

Currently, if you come into this forum as an interested FSX user, you mainly find threads that create the impression that all people who tried X-Plane are more or less disappointed. The happy users are not here, but at other places. That's a pity somehow.

It's also sad that in the avsim screenshot forum just a very small number of X-Plane users are posting screenshots. I wonder why?

And finally, the file library, that is more or less unused by X-Plane freeware authors ... (but this has been discussed in another thread.)

That's a quite nice analogy <_< .

EDIT: Nevertheless it's still a bit "strange" to give installation instructions for FSX in an X-Plane forum.

I just drowned ....  Glup glup glup.....  :-)

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Yes of course there is P3D. But i was not sure about it's signification nowadays. Why for example do the not develop it to 64bit? So it sounds to me like there isn't a lot of potential. But i may be wrong of course.

There's plenty of potential.

Massive amounts in fact. You can go check out the P3D forum though for what's coming. Don't want to derail this thread.

I apologize to any and all who were offended by my improper sharing of FSX ideas. I guess I felt I was "authorized" because I was lured to X-Plane and sucked in by the idea that 64-bits was going to be a real game-changer. I was indeed in love, with the thought that lockups, stutters and freezes were going away forever, I was moving to the land of OZ.

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings - but it didn't turn out that way. I was SHOCKED when I could make a $1000 Video Card slow to a crawl as bad or worse than any stutter I ever saw in 'the other world'. At 4.7 GHZ no less. With 16GB of high-speed ram, and yes, Virginia, in 64-bitness. Inconceivable to steal a line from "The Princess Bride."

So when I woke up and realized that while X-plane is something to 'love' - it may be a while before I can 'live with her'. Meanwhile, I sought only to share some discoveries I made after returning to the dark side of FSX, in hopes of helping some others who may have been struggling. After all, the Microsoft development on FSX ended what, like six years or more ago? X-Plane is allegedly being worked on quite fervently on nearly a daily-basis, yet we haven't seen any new betas in quite a while...just saying...

Meanwhile the promise of 10.3 in X-Plane remains in the realm of speculation and conjecture. I'm sure it WILL happen sooner or LATER.

I applaud Laminar and wish Austin great success. I dearly hope he brings it up to the level we all know it will eventually occupy - I believe ultimately it is the future of flight simulation. Hopefully Laminar can prosper and persevere.

And yes, I still love X-Plane. Just as much when I first saw those freeway overpasses, signage, and the railroad trains and police cars. The night lights? To die for. The rest will come. Someday.

I agree, a little more frequent communication from LR about what they are trying to achieve in 10.30 would help in quelling some of the angst.

Isn't the word "angst" a bit strong when dealing with release cycles of entertainment products? O.o

(If my dictionary is correct, it means a heavy, very serious fear for one's own existence ...)

Don’t be shocked by the fact that you could bring your modern computer rig to a crawl with XP10. 64-bit was about reducing “Out of Memory” issues, presently plaguing FSX, not to speed things up. Also this is modern software optimised and future proofed so just like software before, including FS9 and FSX, you probably won’t have a rig to run if at max for another 10 years !

I have experienced the complete reverse of some of the above posters. After really enjoying XP9 I retried FSX and really enjoyed that again. With the increased community knowledge configuring it was relatively easy; some  but not all of the irritating visibility issues had been resolved; and some of the addons were excellent if increasingly expensive. I love the Coolsky DC9, A2A spitfire/ B17, MilvizC310, Majestic Q400 and all the RealAir aircraft. I particularly love some of the virtual cockpit modelling and the engine noises. But it isn’t perfect and I don’t suppose any rational people are suggesting it is.

In the last month with XP10 having moved to 10.22 I thought I’d test the water (ocean). Boy is XP10 not perfect. You quickly forget how frustrating at times it can be to set up and become comfortable with a complex piece of software (including every iteration of the Falcon and MFS series). Well XP10 reminded me again especially trying to set up virtual cockpit views ala the excellent FSX arrangement. The problem was resolved with the “PilotView” plugin.

So what. Well it has now become my go to simulator if I have a spare ½ hour. Is it as good as FSX with £500 of addons... no. With just £5 for UrbanMaxx and freeware OSM though it aint looking bad. At night and in bad weather it’s better. Are the best aircraft in FSX better than those in XP yes . Is the gap reducing dramatically yes. With the release of LES SAAB 340 and the hopefully soon to be released IXEG 737 the gap is arguably non-existent. If you want the best helicopters, F104, A380 and DC3.... there in XP10.

The thing I most missed from my FSX experience was the general smoothness, fluidity and sense of flight in XP. I know this has been discussed ad nauseam but for me the very best aircraft in XP10 are going to be better than the very best in FSX/P3D. Also anything mediocre in XP is going to be alot worse than the equivalent in FSX. I think XP is a very unforgiving programme especially for flight dynamics.

So do I still love XP...oohh yes.

Which doesn’t mean I don’t love FSX. I’ve alot of love to spread around !!

Dear Santa,

Please could Austin sort out the problem with torque/ propeller drag exaggerating roll instability.

Please could A2A / RealAir / LES collaborate to produce a Pitts S1 for X-plane 10 . RealAir and LES sorting out the aerodynamics (including hypercritical) and A2A doing the model/ cockpit/ engine sounds.

That’s not too much to ask for...is it?

OOpps apologises for font problems

Well leave it alone !!

I am new to XP. I only use it since two weeks in the demo version. I use FSX and other simulation software since over twenty years.

My impression is that it is a nice product which suffers a lot from its “one person” approach. And to me it seems a bit odd that LR claims to be a competitor to FSX with an development team of only one handful of people!

I think XP has hugh potential (from what I have seen so far) but needs desperately to be worked on. And it would be best if that could be done within the next week or so (pun intended) because once the other new simulator comes out in V2.0 it will be harder to gain market shares.

XP10 was the chance to concur the market, to team up with other developers but it seems as if “the management” has not made it.  That often happens when good experts drive a business without the sense for business needs.

One last comment: I think it is silly to complain that XP10 can be brought down if everything is maxed out. That is how it should be today. There needs to be room for improvement. But I bet that there will be a lot of complaints once P3D 2.0 is out for the very same reason. But with a few of the sliders back two notches XP10 runs not too bad for me.

I don’t love it but will certainly keep an eye on it and may come back for an encounter here and there. B)

On the one hand I would like to … but on the other hand I like more flying than writing myriads of postings in a forum …

And there ARE many happy XP users, (I don’t want to turn this into one of this - never ending - FSX vs. XP discussions), but ... my observations about XP users on the one hand and on the other hand FSX users (and as it seems some who use both sims): they seem to be different in their behavior (like e.g. the typical Mercedes driver is different to the typical BMW driver). I have seen this not only in this forum, but also in other forums.

The ones are discussing their a.ss off  about (almost) everything in the world (even things which aren’t related to flight sims). There are (many) guys with 5-10 posts EVERY day (partly very long), over many years. Nothing wrong with this – but it needs (a lot of) time.

The others don’t discuss this much, they simply enjoy flying. Because … (at least in my eyes) the main purpose of a flight sim is more to fly and less discussing about it, isn't it?

There’s one other difference I have observed (a little bit exxagerated):

When you ask the users of xxx about their favorite plane, you get the answer: 737, 737, 737, MD11, 737, 747, 737, 777, 737, Cessna Caravan, 737, 737, 737, 777, 777, 777, 747, …

When asking the users of yyy about their favorite plane, you get the answer: 737, A380, A320, MD11, Jetstream, Cessna Caravan, MU2, 777, CRJ200, 777, … It seems obvious what xxx and yyy means in this context .

I don’t know, why it is this way, but that’s my impression …

So ... how do we proceed now?

My sceneries (excerpt): LPMA Madeira (XPFR), LGSR Santorini, LRBV Brasov, the city of Fürth (Germany), several libraries, ...

Add to this a quite big update on terrain textures and some new terrain types (which my new HD Mesh Scenery v2 will actively use ... and all other DSF re-cuts too).

The reason for a potential 10.25 is to have an "early" artwork roll-out  (which doesn't mean code changes etc.), while a 10.30 - with all the code changes - will need a longer beta phase (just as with all larger versions).

Yes i forgot to mention the important fact about this new Mesh with better resolution! It really sounds very promising! Thanks in advance for your big work ;-)

Hi Mario

I agree with you. It's very great that some users using both simulators can share their impressions and Robert gave some very interesting impressions, since he knows well both of the sims.

But i think everybody will agree that, when it comes to detailled installation-insctructions for the FSX (as the thread was about "do we like X-Plane"?) so i think it goes just too far and this hasn't anything to do anymore with the subject.

There's plenty of potential.

Massive amounts in fact. You can go check out the P3D forum though for what's coming. Don't want to derail this thread.

Thanks. In fact i just have read in some forums about the P3D and perhaps i just wan't lucky but the general impression was that they don't see any big potential in it...it seems that the option of 64bit isn't even discussed by the developpers. And the potential seem only to exist for very specific flying-skills-practices, that won't be part of my personal simulator-interests. But i only read 3-4 threads about it yesterday, so i may be wrong ;-)

I apologize (..). The rest will come. Someday.

Hi Robert. I really wanted to say that your long posts where for me extremely interesting, since i never have tried FSX. And i think your (general) posts were really welcome in this thread, since i could understand very well what you had experienced and your feelings/frustrations. Thats' the kind of informations that makes it very intersting here.

My comment was only about 1-2 posts you made that only focussed on some technical discussions about the installation of FSX. Im sure you will understand that it's better not to go to deep in that direction, since most uf us don't even have the FSX to understand what it is about.

And i hope that i didn't hunt you away, because - once again- i really like your posts and explanations and experiences! And i am sure that i am not the only one here ;-)

Hey, I'm not sensitive. I got a little excited in my zeal to lend a hand to others. This wasn't the proper place. I will fly more and let people develop their own solutions, that's something that consumes way more time than actual flying.
