Configuration Observations and Tips

Featured Replies

I thought I would start a thread where everyone posts their observations and tips on configuration/graphics settings. There is a lot scattered in the main thread. I'll get it started. I haven't tested all of these, but have garnered them from this and the FTX and LM forums.

1. Running in full screen and without the menu bar improves FPS.

2. If the scenery seems too blurry, disable FXAA.

3. Shadows are the main FPS killer. Experiment with those settings after configuring everything else. The options that cast/receive the most shadows (such as vegetation) have the most effect.

4. AI plane and autos have less an effect on FPS, so those sliders can be moved up compared to FSX.

5. Water setting must be ultra to see the DX11 weather animated wave effects. There are still some water issues that LM is working on.

6. The black screen is a known bug that LM is working on. Disable HDR for a temporary work around.

7. AA: the general consensus is that in-game AA needs work. LM is working with Nvidea to improve. Some have reported that disabling all AA and setting it via Nvidea Inspector helps. Others say NI has no effect.

8. Disabling aircraft lights illuminate ground seems to improve FPS.

Anyone else?

Ad. 5) To see waves you must have mesh set at 1m.

Ad. 6) Or you can exit the sim in windowed mode. The black screen HDR bug only happens if you exit in full screen mode, which means that you will restart in full screen mode as well.

TrackIR works out of the box - no configuration needed.

Good thread - we should try and focus all reports and potential workarounds, to this thread.

Ok, here's my 'stuff' so far :-

(i7 2600k 3.4, HD7850 2GB. Win 7 64)

  • I get the black screen constantly (even with HDR turned off), and the only workaround for me, is that I have to start P3D 2.0 in Windowed Mode.   (I can then switch to Full Screen to fly, no problem, but I must switch back to Windowed Mode before quitting P3D, or else, it will be a unrecoverable black screen on the next load.    [EDIT:  Just saw Simmerhead reporting the same thing above ]
  • The graphical problem with pop-up windows (ATC etc) not displaying, that plagued some P3D v1.4 users, seems to have been resolved in P3D 2.0 and the ATC, kneeboard, etc, are all displaying fine.
  • P3D does not seem to have an EXE.DLL file, even after it's been run.   But I coped a blank EXE.DLL file from FSX into P3D's relevent folder, and it works fine.   I have OpusFSX 'auto-starting' with P3D 2.0 using the EXE.DLL and it works great.
  •  I have tearing (with vysnc on); remember that I'm using ATI here.    But interestingly, I've noticed that the tearing in only with the aircraft;  the scenery, skies, clouds, water, etc, do not tear! ..... but the aircraft (in this case the a pillars of the A36) tears badly.    I have Aero turned off so about to turn that on.
  • I desperately want to get FSUIPC working with P3D 2.0; I managed to install it, and it shows up in the drop down menu, but as others have reported, the actual FSUIPC GUI will not display when selected (tried Full Screen and Windowed).
  • When I first launched P3D 2.0 I got absolutely horrible performance with the default settings (9-14 FPS).  When I then set all ATI CCC settings over to "Application Controlled" I then got 30 FPS everywhere, even with cockpit shadows on, increased autogen, and bad weather.
  • SHOWSTOPPER! ... (for me)... Mouse cursor problem (no clickspots work) in Full Screen Mode.

This is very useful thread - thank you three for taking time out of your days to post this. I hope I speak for everyone when I say it is much appreciated. I have downloaded P3Dv2 but not yet installed, so this will be a great starting point for me.

Thanks again to you both and to all future posters.

Hey! I got to say this looks like a really good thread and I greatly appreciate everybody reporting and that I'm still having problems with FSUIPC, which I posted elsewhere this appears to be the latest version but the beer to be loading for me.

Also, my I hope Bill scenery on Jack's shopping center house log cabin

Etc. were pulled from the latest iteration of 1.4 and previous versions of FSX where work just fine. Files and directories you in the right place in and on sanely unreferenced inside of seeing Scenery.CFG and inside the scenery library, but I am not seeing my stuff as I didn't all previous versions of FSX and P 3-D.

Vsync didnt work for me either till i enabled Aero again (Win 7)

Weren't you one of the ones having problems with the A2A C172 clickspots as well? Maybe a coincidence.....maybe not?

I had some time to do some testing this morning on my 3570k and GTX 760 in Win 8.1.

1. I noticed that changing the scenery density slider has much less effect than in FSX.  I can set buildings and trees to very dense with little FPS impact.  Evidently, P3D has indeed moved a lot of that work to the GPU.

2.The AI vehicle density slider has only marginal effect on FPS--much less than in FSX.

3. Strangely, turning on FXAA improved FPS.

4. Turning on vsync had no effect on FPS (perhaps because it's not working in Win 8).

5. I set AA to 4x in P3D and also set NI with 8x S for AA and 2X sparse grid supersampling.  That actually improved FPS and image quality vs the P3D settings alone, so NI does seem to work. However, if I disabled AA in P3D, I had no AA.  Thus, it seems to act like DX10 mode in FSX in that AA has to be enabled in P3d for NI settings to override.

6. Changing water quality setting from medium to ultra had a negligible impact on FPS, but I also didn't notice any significant difference in the water quality.

7. I cannot start a flight in full screen mode with the black screen option unchecked. It reverts back to windowed mode with a partially maximized window so I must then switch to windowed mode to maximize and then change to full screen mode. As others have noted, if I start in full screen with the black screen option checked, I get the black screen of death. This has been reported to LM, so I'm hopeful of a fix.

Yes thanks Glenn, I have vsync working now, having turned on Aero.  (although my FSX installation is snarling at me from the corner of the room, as it hates Aero...).

The clickspots - yes I did have the problem with the A2A 172 but it was fully resolved by the first patch that A2A put out.   This issue in P3D 2.0 is different.   It seems more cursor related than clickspot related, because :-

- it applies to all aircraft (clickspots don't work in any aircraft)

- it only happens in Full Screen Mode, or in Window Mode if the window is stretched to a large size.  With a v.small window, the cursor works.

I've seen other people referring to this issue as the "cursor problem" as it does seem to be about cursor function, rather than the assigned clickspots in a given aircraft.

Regarding FSUIPC, it's only the GUI that is not working, but you can edit the configuration file (FSUIPC4.ini) in the Modules folder, and it works.

And if you have FSX or P3D 1.4 installed, you can just copy the configuration file from there.

I'm sure Pete Dowson will get it fixed as soon as he gets back from his holiday in a few days.

Good. I cant get the 1/2 refresh rate to work though. I think its badly needed.

Thanks for this thread!

Can anyone recommend the right affinity-mask entry in .cfg for a INtel 4-core cpu (no HT)?

Thx!

When I get P3D v2 up and running on my end this will be the goto thread. I'd also like to say we need to make sure LM is in the loop for whatever issues we find so they can fix it (both with P3D and third party compatibility if the issue proves to be on their end).

There's no reason you need it. P3D used all 4 cores by default.
