January 9, 201412 yr Lets hope we have better luck with the next "Expert" that volunteers, the last one did not end well, would hate to go through that again. You would? If it happened again, I would personally go to our COLO site and pull the plugs myself.
January 9, 201412 yr Author Its not the Internet, it is the Hardware and the way forward is to make areas of AVSIM subscription only otherwise folk will give up and drift away. Not too many people are leaving or giving up. The other day, maybe two or three days ago, I saw on the AVSIM Forums (on the upper left) that we are over 122,000 strong and today I look and it says we are over 125,000! I guess it's a good thing only about 800 people (sometimes near a thousand!) are on-line at a time. The stats Tom has been throwing out lately in posts and in the forum counter for the number who are members are simply staggering to me. We are growing! Jim, just to add some meat to that bone, here are the new registrations in the last month. This results from us "throttling" guest access in order to give system performance to our registered users: And that is after blocking a couple of thousand spammer attempts at registration, blocking entire subnets, etc.
January 9, 201412 yr Down here in Australia I rarely get connected anymore. I have to try several times a day, used to be able to connect straight away. Probably our backward 'old copper wire' setup - in about 90% of homes and businesses. Ah.... to experience fibre(fiber) optic!
January 9, 201412 yr Down here in Australia I rarely get connected anymore. I have to try several times a day, used to be able to connect straight away. Probably our backward 'old copper wire' setup - in about 90% of homes and businesses. Ah.... to experience fibre(fiber) optic! I believe that. You are on the opposite side of the "demand cycle". Europe is asleep and so is most of the U.S., so user numbers are lower, and therefore demand on the system.
January 9, 201412 yr Sometimes Avsim is fast, sometimes it's slow and sometimes I get a 503 etc, I'm very happy though for the service at the price I pay for it. Really appreciate what you guys do so I can connect with fellow flight sim nerds!
January 9, 201412 yr Jim, just to add some meat to that bone, here are the new registrations in the last month. Tom, That is incredible. I remember the early days when that would comprise the total number of registered users. January 9, 201412 yr Moderator Tom, I notice on your post that this particular server has a reported up time of 23 hours 30 minutes. Is the missing 30 minutes a time when the server is busy rebooting and launching the server again? Fr. January 9, 201412 yr Commercial Member No they wont. I can think of no other flight sim forum that has the same broad spectrum of sims, subjects and support. Every other forum I frequent are single issue places. Orbx=Orbx (It was, at one time a 'community' but that changed for reasons that escape me) A2A=A2A stuff etc. etc. Sure, the lagginess is a little irritating sometimes, but in the great scheme of things it's not that big a deal. Let's face it, what's sooo important on a forum that can't wait a few seconds? It definitely beats walking :-) Regards, Dave Opper HiFi Support Manager
January 12, 201412 yr Come on Tom tell these guys the truth -- AVSIM is the BEST forum for our hobby. it's been my "go to guy" for all aspects of this incredibly complex nexus of hardware, software, ideas, problems and solutions. If the occasional slow load gets in the way I guess it's our own fault for counting on you to educate, entertain and enlist us in furthering flight simming. Please keep up the good work and we'll throw in a dose of patience to smooth the way. Rick Bertz

January 16, 201412 yr I was surprised at how simplified that video was. And I'm not even a network engineer! Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
February 22, 201412 yr Seems like the video explains nothing since lots of servers depend on the global architecture and do very well compared to current AVSIM performance. However, Tom explained it all quite well when he said the AVSIM forums need 're-architected'. Tom, you mentioned you need a volunteer MYSQL expert for this task. Do we know what does a paid expert cost for this task, if that's maybe an option here? Or perhaps that's a dangerous task but in some ways a paid person sounds contractually obliged not to do harm/hack. If you have a quote perhaps it's time to put up a special donation graphic that shows where we are at meeting this particular goal, like the typical thermometer graphic? It seems like waiting for a volunteer may never happen and I for one wouldn't mind donating to that particular cause as the issues appears to be getting worse rather than better in my experience.
