January 30, 201412 yr I was just watching various videos, and noticing that for every super-rig I see that runs things smoothly, there are probably 10 other vids from "normal" people with hitches, glitches and frame rates that make me twitch a bit  and would probably drive me crazy. (or at least into an upgrade frenzy) And of course not everyone here is running a super rig. In fact I suspect most probably are not! I just wonder what the majority would consider the lowest frame rate (guest starring the famous twins, stutter and lag) they could possibly tolerate for how they use their various sims without going insane? I wont post any videos demonstrating what i'm saying, cause that would just be mean. (and not the real point) I'm just curious. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... January 30, 201412 yr I think about 10 FPS is as low as I'd want to go, as long as it was stutter free. I remember at one point thinking that you can land a fixed wing plane at 8 FPS, but that's not enough for a helicopter. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! January 30, 201412 yr Commercial Member 30 is the lowest with zero stutters, hense why I stuck with fs9 for so long. I see videos on YouTube with awful performance yet comments saying 'wow, what are you specs!' Only recently I have been able to achieve the same sort of performance with FSX. Am yet to install the PMDG 777, if the fps is bad I'll study it on the ground and continue flying FS9 Flying has to be silky smooth or it's a no go for me. 30 is the lowest with zero stutters, hense why I stuck with fs9 for so long. I made a quick and dirty tech support vid a while back, no Fraps, just smooth fps.. Praying my rig will handle the T7 as smoothly http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LWzb9ahydAk Rob Prest

January 30, 201412 yr I rate my FPS over eyecandy, im probably one of few that actually does, At the moment im flying xplane exclusively and i have my fps locked at 60 with my refreshrate. Never have i experienced such butter smooth gauges and motion, i couldnt go back to 25 30 fps in fsx again... AME GE90, GP7200 CFM56
January 30, 201412 yr Anything lower than 30 is annoying; occasional drops from 30 down to 25 or so I can tolerate, once below that it's irritating. Funny to think how content I was in 2006 with a locked 20 fps in FSX. I think about 10 FPS is as low as I'd want to go, as long as it was stutter free. Um...how would that be possible..stutter free 10 FPS? When I see solid a 10 FPS I see a stuttering mess, but that's me. January 30, 201412 yr Moderator As long as it isn't a slide show. Of course, when I install my Telefunkin U-47, framerates will be a moot point... Alan I didn't want to contaminate the question by giving a baseline..... ^_^ I would say 20 and above with no glitches or stuttering. Currently I run Xplane 10 at extreme settings and have New York running at about 25 FPS on the theory that no place else in the sim will be as demanding. But 20 in X-Plane and 20 in FSX are very different animals. 20 in X-Plane 10 is very smooth. 20 on FSX is barely tolerable, so I would say 30 for FSX Overall I'm most happy with 30 and above for both sims. (which is what I have in X-Plane except over places like New York, and since I am running at 16x AA its hard to expect much more....) We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... January 30, 201412 yr Commercial Member See now it's pictures like that ^ which make me want to move to XPX so bad. Then I open the notepad file which I've stored my FSX purchase history in, and tabulate the total cost of addons over the years... Aamir Thacker
January 30, 201412 yr Author There are a lot of things that affect how I see framerates. For instance, when banking, both sims can judder slightly at lower frames and I hate that. I'm super-sensitive to smoothness variations. Tearing frames is why I can also never turn off V-sync. Even if the tearing is very slight it drives me mad after a while.... Watching Youtube vids where it seems I can almost count the individual frames will make me switch to a different video, even if the one I was watching was otherwise very good. We are all connected..... January 30, 201412 yr It seems I have low expectations. I'm pretty happy with 10FPS on my computer for FSX. It gets a bit rough but still bearable for me. Kind regards, Luke Bischoff
January 30, 201412 yr I don't mind 10, as long as I don't need to react quickly (e.g. on approach). But since I got rid of lots of addons and switched to DX10, I never really get below 20. Florian
January 30, 201412 yr Smoothness is more important than fps. In the T7, for example, it's still smooth with 12 fps, but in most of the other aircraft 20+ fps feel more adequate for smoothness. What happened to AVSIM
January 30, 201412 yr Moderator Devon, No maliciousness, bad thoughts or 'Forum Bull' tendencies intended or implied... I was just curious what your ideal framerate was. With the Specs I have for my computer, my choices for add on Airports (the big ones) stay at the Default ones! I do have to be somewhat selective with my Airplane choices. Based on previous Comments, I always thought FS Videos were a bit misleading because with all of the editing software out there, it's hard to tell if what you're seeing is actually the case. Alan
