March 4, 201412 yr How is ASN stacking up against AS2012? (I've been using that and REX Essential for a while now). I'd get the demo but can't get a key. Just curious if there is a noticeable difference.
March 4, 201412 yr These spinning clouds occur from within the VC when using TrackIR, correct, or is it only in external views?
March 4, 201412 yr Yes,, well in FSX it does very well! In the "old days" one had to use CumulusX, but I have abandoned that and using ASN alone now. When wind is right in the Cape Mountains area (South Africa), it behaves exactly as one would expect; real fun and great training to read the topography. I will do a video in P3D soon as I can get my glider installed. That's fantastic! I though only Cumulus X could do that. Will have to try it out. What about realistic thermals and wave?
March 4, 201412 yr No wave, bur thermals are very plausible :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
March 4, 201412 yr These spinning clouds occur from within the VC when using TrackIR, correct, or is it only in external views? Both external and VC... and the default camera shows it as well, though it tends to be more noticeable with TrackIR. This is something that affects all P3Dv2x users regardless of cloud textures or weather engines... though weather engines placing lots of Stratus will show the issue more severely. Cirrus clouds do not spin... though they do render in bands or stripes, which is a (P3D) bug.
March 4, 201412 yr These spinning clouds occur from within the VC when using TrackIR, correct, or is it only in external views? Lot's of rumours about these spinning clouds, I have only ever seen them from a top down view and zoomed out. But I don't fly that way so do not see them from the VC even when looking side on or flying through them. Here is a great video (not mine) that shows basically what I am seeing. Points to note, unlike me he uses TrackIR, but like me, he keeps zoom to 100%. I suspect that whatever problem is there, is exaggerated by using a zoom factor of 0.30% (and many do for some strange reason). Both external and VC... and the default camera shows it as well, though it tends to be more noticeable with TrackIR. Cirrus clouds do not spin... though they do render in bands or stripes, which is a (P3D) bug. I disagree only because the way you have worded this suggests that everybody has the problem of seeing spinning clouds constantly and that of course is not true, otherwise everybody would be jumping up and down about it. I think the potential is there under certain zoom and camera settings (just like FSX), but there has been no definitive answer yet.
March 4, 201412 yr Boring, stop talking about spinning clouds and talk about ASN. I was excited to see 20 posts only to find a couple talking about the subject title And the rest going off topic.

I'm sure we're all extremely sorry to have wasted your precious precious time with a little side discussion concerning weather depiction in P3D... Thanks for the vid, anz.
March 4, 201412 yr No spinnimg cloud for me. I have surround, track ir and looking around all time. Not seen one since i started using Prepar3d 3 months ago. Zoom at 0.9 for all my views so I also suspect this is related to small zoom values... PierreP3D when its freezing in Quebec....well, that's most of the time...C-GDXL based at CYQB for real flying when its warming up...

Just curious if there is a noticeable difference. Don't understand - "can't get a key". Are you getting an error message? Post on the HiFi support forum and they should get you squared away. There is a big difference between ASN and AS2012 especially in the way that it handles clouds. ASN knows where each cloud is positioned which makes the weather radar extremely effective. If you see a weather front ahead with a lane through it, you can fly in the lane with clouds on either side, etc. Get the demo key squared away and give it a try - remember though, if you are used to AS2012 - cut back on the cloud layers for best results. ASN produces deeper layers and you don't need 8 - 10 layers to get results - plus much less of a performance hit. Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
March 5, 201412 yr Wow, I bought ASN for FSX, but it really shows its stuff in P3d 2.1. It's just my opinion, but ASN is a must have add-on for P3d. I just flew the A2A C172 from Albany, NY to Yarmouth, NS to get a full view of the weather created by ASN. Partial sun at the beginning of the flight and real bad weather at the end (low overcast, fog, rain, snow and even some hail). BTW, I have TrackIR and I've never seen "cloud spinning" either. It almost seems like the problem is a hardware dependent issue that has something to do with the shader code and what specific video card drivers do with the code. What's missing from P3d (other than the tubeliner which will stay unmentioned)? OpenLC from ORBX, raindrops on aircraft windshields and really not much else. The flight simming experience using the suite of ORBX products, TrackIR, REX 4 textures and ASN is almost perfect.
March 5, 201412 yr Does anybody know know how "open" the "open" beta period is? Mine says 7 days only <gulp>.
March 5, 201412 yr If you haven't paid then your trial will end after 7 days regardless of whether you are using the beta software or not. Cheers, Andy.
March 5, 201412 yr So it's not an "open beta" then? It's a 7 day trial of a beta (not final) product. Oh well.
March 5, 201412 yr It's open to ASN for FSX buyers, i.e. people outside of the official beta team and for anyone for 7 days with the trial version. Cheers, Andy.
