How do you cope with FSX crashes, especially on long flights?

Recommended Posts

No, no I'm not asking how to fix crashes or anything like that. We all encounter crashes, for some a lot, for others, once in a blue moon. I haven't had a crash for about 2 months now up until 20 minutes ago, at the time of posting.

All was good, up until around 4 hours into my flight from WMKK to VIDP, I decided to check my VA's website to see if my flight was being tracked properly, since this was my first time using xAcars for the VA, and I noted I wasn't on the "flights in progress" list. Now I rarely go out of full screen mode, only when I'm parked up at an airport somewhere do I do that to get a flightplan or something. So pressing Alt + Enter, I stared in disbelief as the "FSX has stopped responding" and the "xAcars failed to connect" windows popped up. I didn't know whether to punch the computer, yell, or cry.  :t0105:  And then I thought, well a lot of other people have crashes too. And I was wondering how they cope with their crashes, especially the ones that happen after flying for 10 hours, so I decided to make this post and ask you lot how you cope with the crashes that bring that disappointing, heart sinking, monkey punching feeling.

So how do you cope with your crashes? As for me I'm just going to sit here and pretend that someone drugged me and hijacked the plane.

Save early and often.  At the worst, I was saving every 15 minutes.

I run in windowed mode, by making a special desktop theme with a small title bar with a dark background and never even notice it.  That way I never have to minimize FSX.  I started running in windowed mode all the time because full screen will mask any error dialogs.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I'm guessing you guys don't have to bear the anguish of the sim crashing after 4-8 hours of flying do you?  :P

Have flights saved by FSUIPC on a regular basis automatically.

That's only possible with the registered version of FSUIPC, isn't it?

I was getting crashes all the time, but since I've gone to window mode, no more crashes. When you go to window mode you can grab the edges of the smaller screen and make it full screen.I was even getting crashes when going to the flight map or changing the weather.

Having CTD's wouldn't be so bad to me if your flight hours still got recorded into FSX somehow. Or a option to add the hours if you were keeping track yourself. Maybe someday someone will create a new logbook addon that can be edited in case of CTD's. Losing 5 to 9 hours of flight time is a painful thought to me. Especially if your flying in normal mode and not 4 or 8x speed.

My worst crash was during a 4 hour flight, was just about to enter the BYP6 Star into KDFW in a PMDG MD11 when she froze in midair. Could still hear her 3 beautiful engines running for several minutes but soon they faded. A urge to destroy everything in my room flamed through my mind. But soon the rage cooled into a inquisitive mind set.

I found out from other FSX users here that shutting off my UAC settings and taking out all the FSX files that were listed in my anti viruses low restricted folder, could stabilize my game. They were right. I still have issues but it's much better. That's how I will cope with crashes from now more analytically.

On payed FSUIPC, I'm not sure if that saves totally everything you have set and had to program into the jet. Like FMS info and what if you started the flight with engines off or a pre loaded panel state? Not sure if saving will help.

i coped with them by gradually adjusting my setup so i don't really get them anymore :)

main thing is not using fullscreen mode, the alt+enter was a roll of the dice every time, or anything involving a reload of scenery or ai could result in a crash (like jetsmell mentioned above).

i also use bob scott's vasmon to keep an eye on my memory usage and if it's starting to look sketchy i will turn the autogen down. my settings are pretty conservative already, the only plane that really gives me troubles with this is the fslabs concorde which eats a whopping 2gb by itself.

Hi

Get a second, cheap, low spec PC and use it for all of the stuff you want to during your flight and leave your (dedicated) sim PC to do what it's best at - flying !

Regards

That's what I was thinking. I have a laptop currently, but it's quite old and everything in it from the WIFI to the speakers are broken. It can only be used to read PDF's which is good enough. I'm thinking of getting a better laptop, and maybe I can run stuff on there networked.
