April 11, 201412 yr Are we seriously talking about LM taking people's license away again? Good grief. No, what we're talking about is having the media on your shelf versus not. The preferred option is to be able to purchase software from more vendors than just the developer (when it's something other than an add-on). Apple did this for years and almost went out of business. I understand LM's marketing as P3D is not a game but should they pull the plug simmers new to our hobby will have to go find a copy of FSX or use X-Plane. Registering your existing product won't be an issue and no I don't believe LM will take you license away... April 11, 201412 yr it's better, **in my opinion**, then the before stated rented versions LM has. I have a Licence for FSX, I also have a Licence for Prepar3D, both require online validation. Please explain how Prepar3D is rented but FSX is not. At this point FSX is not better, it is abandoned software that does not have near the features or robustness that Prepar3D offers even at this early stage, while Prepar3D is in active development with open dialog with the development team at LM. The next version will bring even more features for 3rd party developers to work with and any bugs will have hotfixes within days just like last nights hotfix for the flightplanner crashes, that took all of three days after being reported. The VAS issues took about month to sort out after feedback from this community but now VAS usage is much better than FSX. Prepar3D runs much more from the GPU and will scale as better GPU's become available while FSX is CPU bound when CPU development is at a crawl When was the last update for FSX, six years ago ? When was the last time we heard from an ACES dev, Five years ago ? It is not even a contest anymore, one look at the terrain rendering with the shadows and seeing those cloud shadows roll by tells you all you need to know. Yesterday I was sat on a runway under a cloud shadow and as I did my final checks the cloud rolled down the runway and over my cockpit, I watched as the sunlit runway came towards my aircraft and the cockpit lit up with light as it arrived, amazing stuff. Try that in FSX.
April 11, 201412 yr Try that in FSX. Your Opinion. FSX is not abandoned. P3D blah blah is renamed FSX. They are the exact same creature. Mine is on my shelf, and can be installed and validated now and far into the future, as the box is still being sold to this day... new... for half the price you paid. All new anything being developed and sold is for FSX and compatible with P3 because P3 is renamed FSX. P3D 1.0 to P3D 1 million is renamed FSX. Nothing you can say, explain, or whatever will ever change that fact until LM develops a new, never before seen code not based on FSX. But like I said, don't get your panties in a bunch. Enjoy your sim.
April 12, 201412 yr haha always so literal. We all know what he means Lockheed Martin sells it as an Academic Licence, the download has the letters Academic, and the watermark on the screen states Academic Licence. Why not call it an Academic Licence? " If it walks likes a duck..."? Gerry Howard
April 12, 201412 yr Lockheed Martin sells it as an Academic Licence, the download has the letters Academic, and the watermark on the screen states Academic Licence. Why not call it an Academic Licence? " If it walks likes a duck..."? My dictionary notes "Academic" as "a person engaged in scholarly pursuits." I would like to think that most flight simmers are such! Of course, those who do not wish to learn anything, should refrain from P3D in favour of FSX, which is for entertainment only & which prohibits users from learning anything. january

April 12, 201412 yr "which is for entertainment only & which prohibits users from learning anything". Now that is funny. As a person who has pilots in my family, I can tell you from first hand experience that any sim is not only limited, but extremely limited in what it can teach you. Well.. let me back that up. Sims can teach you everything you need to know, except, how to fly a plane. The actual physical hands on, in the real air flying, requires the real deal to learn to do.
April 12, 201412 yr Commercial Member My take on it is LM have purchased from MS certain rights to modify ESP. Part of those rights allow LM to enhance ESP with LM modifications for educational and professional purposes to LM clients. What this means is MS have reserved themselves the right to modify and sell ESP as entertainment software, the restriction is on LM. We don't have to wear a false beard and glasses just in case we find ourselves entertained by P3D. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com

I have long been mystified as to why MS never promoted FS as "learning tool" to teach geography. Imagine what might be learned about Malaysia, Beijing, Indonesia, Strait of Malacca & Australia !! To say nothing about one's own country. There should be a copy of FS in every classroom- oops sorry, FS is for entertainment only! january

April 12, 201412 yr P3 because P3 is renamed FSX. P3D 1.0 to P3D 1 million is renamed FSX. Nothing you can say, explain, or whatever will ever change that fact until LM develops a new, never before seen code not based on FSX. Just as FSX is a renamed FS9 with more features, Prepar3D is a much improved version of FSX. Or are you disputing that the additions that LM has added are improvements ? Someone is trying to take your FSX forward with features and bug fixes but it seems like you are almost resentful of that. strange outlook mate.
April 12, 201412 yr If that was the case MSFS would need to have much better scenery out of the box, and something like floating names above cities, rivers, mountains and landmarks I wasn't aware that MSFS was inadequate for VFR. january
April 12, 201412 yr I wasn't aware that MSFS was inadequate for VFR. january Don't tell me you think the default FSX scenery is accurate enough for geography lessons.
