Happy Birthday to HM The Queen

I can't help thinking that all these 'Lizzie' comments are more than a touch disrespectful, so;

Happy Birthday to Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

Oh, and Happy Saint Georges day too.........now there's an interesting story, considering he's the patron saint of England, a Christian country.

Cheers

I really don't understand why this topic is being watched by moderators. What's wrong with a lively debate? No-one's been threatened with being incarcerated in the Tower of London   yet!

And for those who say it's nothing to do with flight sim that's why we have a Hanger Chat forum where anything (within reason) goes.

Some people are republicans and would rather have a president overseeing the country. As a monarchist that's not what I would want but each to their own. It's not as though it's likely to happen soon. Polls conducted in the UK show overriding support for the Royal Family. That may change when Charles takes the throne but I'm hoping he abdicates quickly and passes the baton to William and Katherine who would make an excellent King and Queen.

I vote for what Paul said and wish Her Majesty a belated happy 88th birthday.

Personally, I think it's time we returned to an hereditary absolute monarchy. I often think we aren't qualified to vote. From 'So Long and Thanks for all the Fish':

“I come in peace,” it said, adding after a long moment of further grinding, “take me to your Lizard.”

Ford Prefect, of course, had an explanation for this, ......

...... “It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see…”

“You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?”

“No,” said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, “nothing so simple. Nothing anything like to straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people.”

“Odd,” said Arthur, “I thought you said it was a democracy.”

“I did,” said ford. “It is.”

“So,” said Arthur, hoping he wasn’t sounding ridiculously obtuse, “why don’t the people get rid of the lizards?”

“It honestly doesn’t occur to them,” said Ford. “They’ve all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they’ve voted in more or less approximates to the government they want.”

“You mean they actually vote for the lizards?”

“Oh yes,” said Ford with a shrug, “of course.”

“But,” said Arthur, going for the big one again, “why?”

“Because if they didn’t vote for a lizard,” said Ford, “the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?”

...

Either that or a proper democracy - one person, one vote. Now I know what you're all thinking... 'Who's the person and why should he get the vote?' Well, if birthday girl was the person with the vote I reckon that would make a democracy just the same as an absolute monarchy.

D

Ray - If one wants to debate a monarchy against a democracy against a dictatorship, etc.... then one should start that topic and see how it goes.  Hijacking an innocent birthday wish to the Queen of England is hardly the place for that debate.

Thank you.

Forgive my ignorance but what's everyone's issue with Charlie? William is just as detached from reality.

I have no desire to trawl through those Bill so I'll leave it to your better judgement. But I did question Tom marking another thread in a similar fashion some months ago and after I questioned him doing that it was removed and nothing further happened. This seems similar.

I have no interest in such a debate and I agree this one has been hijacked but it hasn't become abusive. I think people know when to draw a line.

But if I may make a suggestion. Rather than close down a topic that has become abusive why not just place a temporary forum ban on the guilty parties and let the rest discuss things properly? It would certainly focus the mind as to what is acceptable and what isn't.

It's not everyone's issue with Charles. Just some. He is quite vocal about things close to his heart which is fine until you become head of state at which point you should keep quiet. But I suspect he couldn't.

As for William being detached from reality he's served as an RAF helicopter rescue pilot. Quite the reverse I would say.

As it happens, I am the one who set the 'flag' as a proactive notice that 'we' would be watching more closely than the norm. It was intended as a 'heads up' so to speak, nothing more. It seems to have served its intended purpose.

Indeed and Prince Harry served in Afghanistan, you dont get any closer to reality than that.  Having served myself with Prince Andrew down south in 82, I can tell you that these young Royals most definately have their finger on the pulse.

Congrats for your service 'down south' Buster. I think I know where you're referring to.

It should be noted by anti-royals that all the off-spring do their national service these days. It wouldn't be a bad thing to bring it back! Imagine the howls of anguish!

Thank you Ray.  I'm all for bringing back national service, I weep for the sorry state that our once proud nation is in today thanks to Blair & Brown.  Cameron is doing a great job but he has one hell of a mess to clean up. The on going immigration problem can be fixed quite easily by making NS compulsory for immigrants. It will certainly teach them very quickly to respect the laws, traditions and customs of this country.

Interesting ideas there Buster but political suicide for any party that introduces NS. A throw-back to another time that we will sadly not see again.

Sorry to say it but if it wasn't for the Premier league and the Royals the UK would never make the news :)

To be totally honest, the Royal Family keeps the UK relevant to the rest of the world lol.  How many do you think would have been talking about the UK in the past 12 months if not for your new Prince and his attractive mother (and her sister's tight white dress!)

Sadly, I have to agree Ray.   I think there is a referendum coming up on Europe, we should have one on National service at the same time.

Please explain to me how this country was massively better pre-1997. Your final statement directly implies that every immigrant that comes to this country respects neither the laws, traditions or customs which is pretty low and frankly a load of rubbish. There are no natives doing that now, are there?

I don't disagree that compulsory NS may be a good thing though.
