FTX: Global openLC Europe Released

Featured Replies

They haven't said anything so far about a better source for Europe, but they've made it clear that they're continually looking for better sources. For now, the best thing you can do if you want a specific area improved, is to edit it yourself in OSM and send them the new vector data. I went myself and improved the coastlines and roads of my hometown in OSM, sent Bernt the improved vector data and he said it will get in Vector 1.2.

These are GREAT news! I think that most of us are annoyed by issues near places we know. If I can fix surroundings in my home area I will be pleased to do that.

Thanks for info!

So far vector in Serbia is good, but LC part is wrong. Two main islands on the river Danube here are covered in woods, and OpenLC EU placed the city on them, like in default FSX LC. Is it that hard to check that area in Google Earth or in any other satellite maps source? That is also a primary task for any beta tester, to compare the areas to the real world, doesn't matter if ORBX has OSM for that area or not.

Pe11e, have you reported this issue on official forum? I've seen requests regarding incorrect city boundaries in Germany and the ORBX team wrote they will correct that. So I think they will do the same with your areas.

I am software developer myself working currently in Finnish bank. There are few groups of testers, few stages of acceptance and strict release process taking 2 months however there are always some bugs which are found by users. I understand your dissapointment with OpenLC accuracy, however the question is "how ORBX will deal with it", not "why there are bugs". So we will wait, we will see.

BTW: In one of earlier post you have mentioned about missing Kotor city. I hope you have requested this issue, because I would also love to have it included. I was there on vacation 2 years ago. Really beautiful and scenic area

Yes, I want to report missing parts, towns, etc, but to be honest I'm too lazy to do that these days. Fire up my PC, and start FSX to capture screenshots of missing parts and end flying Cherokee, lol.

Errrr I just want to apologise to ORBX and everyone here for some my false statements. Just checked out adriatic and Montenegro coast again, and every city is there. Split, Dubrovnik, Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat, Budva, Becici, and even Perast in the Bay of Kotor. How I managed to remember a picture without these cities is beyond me. So far I'm a pretty happy camper with OpenLC EU. Next step for ORBX is to update Belgrade area and to minimise huge texture repetition is Serbia.

Thanks for that. I've been sitting on the fence with this one, but the more positive reports that come through the more I'm about to slide off it.

I purchased and installed it yesterday. (Installed Global Textures about a month after it was introduced last year I think). Took about 4 - 5 hours total to: 1 hour to DL the four installers, 1.5 hours to back it all up including purchase documentation to 4 DVD,s and make a custom DVD case and insert to hold all 4, and 1 - 2 hours to install all of it and update the libs and get the scenery library entries correctly positioned. Well worth it. I've used Scenery Tech and X-Class LC's and UTX in the past (all are still on my other rig) but Global LC is far better looking to my eyes and the hit to performance is non-existant, maybe even better with GLLC.

The DL's (using Free Download Manager) and installs (including removal of Iceland Demo) went flawlessly but then I'm slow and methodical and I would check the FSX scenery libray as well as FTX Central / Reports to see the changes occuring after each installer dance. When a window tells me something is complete I'll still wait a minute to insure everything is done being written to disc before I click the finish button, even with an SSD.

If you are unfamiliar with the FSS wrapper system, when the first installer window opens move it to the lower right hand corner of the screen so that when the second one opens it won't be hiding behind the first and you shouldn't have any issues, just wait for the iinstructions  to tell you what to do when and in what order.

Something else I've experienced (maybe something to do with with this new wrapper and registration system - unlikely but...), the first 2 or 3 restarts of FSX to make a flight I experience a bit of spiking and texture flashing as I bank or pan around (had the same scenario when I installed Global Textures last year). A couple of cold boots later it stops and never returns, I have absolutely no idea why this should be. It's not a fragmentation issue, that's why I go SSD all the way anymore.

Anyway, my first hop was out of EDQD in Bayreuth Germany, a favorite first flight with any new addon I install that covers that area of the globe for the simple reason that since FSX was introduced that AP elevation has been like Devils tower beyond the apron of RW 06. But more importantly for me, It also has rolling hills that allow you to see well off into the distance over a nice combination on buildings, roads, trees, villages, towns, etc, in all directions around you and I like to test autogen settings in this area. (Testing autogen in a major metropolitan areas at large APs is like trying to catch a hornet with your bare hands and most of my flying is done over suburban to rural to bush areas and I will change autogen on the fly). Default FSX, FSGenesis, and FSGlobal 2005 / 08 /and 10 meshes all gave me this elevation issue and I think it was correctible to a degree in 2010 with AFM. I was very happy to see the FSGlobal Ultimate got it right off the bat, only 6 feet off reality. But I'm certain I will find some mismatches elsewhere arounf the globe as I fly, I don't get overly whacked out unless the AP sits atop a stalagmite. As for GLLC and GLTextures, I searched in vain for the Bayreuth Festspielhaus without success, I'll have to complain over at Orbx about this  . Other than that the area looks incredible. Next flight was out of Naples Int.,in Italy. I set my autogen slider all the way right to the "This is Gonna Crush Your Hardware" setting and low and behold very smooth, and Mt. Vesuvius is awesome in its detail and colors. I'll have to do that one again tomorrow to see if my FSX install is just having one of those random good days today!

Bang for the buck I'd say Global Textures plus Global LC is the way to go (but I do love my Region Packs), especially if Orbx regions and AP's are too pricey. Perfect? No! But, as with just about everything else they release, looks like they'll keep refining it over time (provided we bring issues to their attention) so it should only get better in the future. I'm going to take the plunge with Global Vector when 1.2 gets released, which should be soon.

Enough gum flapping, next stop Norway. I know there will be some AP and lake / pond elevation issues on the north eastern coastline but that area should look good with GLLC and GLTextures.

Hi,

could anyone tell me, if the FTX Global Series can be used with the ftx terrain regions ?!

Thanks in advance,

FSlikerX

It can.

Without any problem ?

And is it worth ?

Yes. Without any problem. For me it's worth it. Europa never looked better in FSX / P3D. :)

PS: You can use FTX Global (incl openLC and Vector) in hybrid mode. ;) For example when you fly from Madrid to England with hybrid mode selected, you will see openLC and when you come to England it will notice FTX England '(if installed). :)

So you think, the ftx terrain regions are better than FTX Global+ OpenLC+ ... ?!

Of course the regions are better. They are far more detailed

The regions are more detailed, but openLC covers the entire world in the future. Europa never looked better with openLC. Just have a look here, only openLC, Global and Vector with FSGlobal2010.

If you don't understand it, ignore it and only have a look at the pictures. It's a trip from germany to greece.
