GTN 750/650

Featured Replies

Thanks guys for you comments. If I understood it correctly navdata (VOR, ILS, etc.) for Europe comes with the GTN750 but not terrain data (for Europe that we may get from the purchase of the DVD), right?

Many thanks!

Easy to get this mixed up.

Navdata that comes with the Garmin Trainer Lite is the cycle from 2011 ... several years old. To update that to current data is expensive.

Terrain data comes with the Garmin Trainer Lite is for North America (edited to also say and Central America) only ... and you can get a worldwide update for $25.

The $25 terrain map is what I ordered (and got confirmation it shipped 2 days ago)

The link Zoran posted shows the additional costs for a 1 time update or subscription which means the annual updates in all categories keep on coming I guess.

It is a bit pricey and broken down into Nav Data, Flite Charts, Obstacle, Safe Taxi, etc. Looks like one could easily spend several grand for complete everything and up dating service. At this level you probably want to be beyond "serious" as a simmer.

Let's rephrase the question a bit then; can the F1 GTN offer more, less or the same functionality as the RXP garmins when flying outside US? That is if we leave out the obviously better user interface of the GTN. (I then take for granted that RXP's garmins will also still be compatible with the V2 Duke in P3Dv2.)

Yes. I have RXP Units also.

RXP Garmins (FS9/FSX/Xplane -32bit) has it all ... well, not the electronic charts.

The Garmin GTN series is a wholesale replacement for the GNS series which has been discontinued in real life.

They use the identical navdata, so the "navigation content" is the same.  The user interface is indeed much improved.

The GTN series also contains terrain data in it's maps, so visually, it looks much better than the GNS.

In the flightsim world, the key thing to remember is that RXP supports FS9/FSX and Flight1 supports FSX/P3D.

RXP doesn't work in P3D I thought....

Well I had reasonable connection speeds last night which is rare so I frivolously went into my bandwidth overage and downloaded everything. So far I bought the GTN 750 and installed it in the default Baron for a quick flight to try it out. Really cool and all the claims to intuitiveness are very true! Now I guess I'd better see if I can get it working in the Duke - and I'll probably be needing a copy of the 650 too just to make the panel look nice, heh!

Ryan,

You are correct ..

My wording was incorrect... sorry about that.

I should have said NO for P3D.

I have RXP Units also for: (FS9/FSX - RXP Xplane -32bit version is also available) has it all ... well, not the electronic charts.

Congrats on your GTN750!

You are in luck, for the Duke, adding a 650 does not really add much functionality.

I own both, and only have the 750 in the Duke panel.

For that, in my Bonanzas, I have the 650 installed..

Would it be possible to know where you've bought it. Could you send the link to me. Thank you very much. Best regards

Thanks Bert

Ummm, it's too late, I bought the 650 also, lol. Installed and tested both in the Duke and all seems OK. So far I've played around with these units on the ramp for an hour or so, one of these days I plan to actually fire up the aircraft and do some flying!

It's beautiful how these integrate with the VC in the Duke BTW, well done Rob & Sean.

For whatever reason I can not cut and past anything here.

Go to - http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=f1gtn

Scroll down and you'll find the info you need for both US and International customers.

If you've already purchased a unit you really should register on the F! GTN Forum. There is a gotcha with respect to the WW terrain. The instructions that come with the disc are incorrect apparently what you do is copy over 1 file only from the DVD to a folder on your GTN install. The instructions that come with the disc are not quite right. The correction is posted in that forum.

Edit, well the link I posted above is incomplete and the system will not allow me to correct the address. Should be an "om" after the .c. There's got to be some trick to this, I tend not to post anything from a third party - just go the the product page, everything you need is there.

Your right, that's why I'm hoping for more RA planesand perhaps A2A to provide this kind of simple install config tool. I don't know if doing it manually with the GTN install tool will look as good.
